Rift is a MMORPG set in a fantasy world called Telara, which is the focal point of several different elemental Planes. These Planes are realities representing the elemental forces of Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Life, and Death, and it is at the one point where every one of these Planes intersect with each other that Telara exists. Each Plane is governed by a Dragon-deity, which is the personification of that elemental force. Through the actions of the Dragon of Extinction, Regulos, the various Dragons have united in an alliance known as the Blood Storm, for the purpose of invading Telara and gaining use of the intersection of all of their realms. In the past, the Blood Storm was defeated by the inhabitants of Telara with the help of the Vigil, the most powerful of the native gods of Telara.
Regulos was cast out into the elemental Planes, while its five compatriots were trapped within Telara and chained beneath a Ward designed to close Telara off from external threats. However, recently, Regulos has gained entry to Telara, destroying the Ward and causing Rifts to open to the elemental Planes, feeding the strength of the trapped Dragons and allowing their minds to enter in a bid to destroy Telara's defenders. Opposing Regulos within Telara are two factions: the Guardians and the Defiant. The conflict between these two factions serves as another source of tension and gameplay. Players have the role of Ascended, superhuman resurrected warriors whose task is to defeat the forces of Regulos and cleanse Telara forever of the threat of the Storm.[8]
The Guardians piously follow the religion of the Vigil, the supreme gods of Telara. They include the high elves, the Mathosians (a warlike culture of humans from the north), and dwarves. Ascended Guardians were resurrected by the Vigil after dying at the hands of Regulos during his return to Telara. Players of Guardians fight and die against one of Regulos' commanders, only to be brought back at the beginning of Rift.
The Defiant are those who, for cultural, historic, or personal reasons, do not follow the religion of the Vigil and have put their trust in science and technology as a way to conquer the forces of Regulos. They include the Eth (a highly advanced human culture from the south), the Bahmi (descendants of interbreeding between Air spirits and humans), and the Kelari (animistic, cabalistic dark elves). Ascended Defiant were resurrected through technology based on the study of the soul-structure of Ascended Guardians in an apocalyptic future in which Telara has nearly been consumed by Regulos. At the beginning of the game, players of Defiant are sent back in time from this point to the beginning of Rift, allowing them to fight at an opportune moment in Telara's timeline, to overthrow the religion of the Vigil and defeat Regulos.
During the Blood Storm wars, the Bahmi’s elemental ancestors arrived on Telara through a rift from the Plane of Air. They proved invaluable warriors and helped turn the fight against the dragon gods. Today, the Bahmi are as known for their wisdom and hospitality as they are for their strength in battle.

Mighty Leap: Vault quickly over medium distances
Shalastir heritage: +20 Air Resistance

Eth

Once a nomadic people, the Eth rose to preeminence by harnessing the power of sourcestone. They erected an empire of city-states and took magitech to new heights, only to scuttle their advancements lest they fall into the grasp of the Blood Storm. Now, what remains of their discoveries are sought by Ascended across Telara.
Special abilities:
Agility: Move 50% faster for short periods of time
Desert Dweller’s Birthright: +20 Earth Resistance

Kelari

Long ago, the Kelari Elves split with Tavril and settled on lush Ember Isle where they were free to worship elemental spirits old and new. When the Blood Storm corrupted their temples and tainted their demigods, the Kelari fled to Freemarch. Now, they add their considerable skills to the ranks of the Defiant.
Special abilities:
Camouflage: Elude enemy detection – as a fox!
Legacy of the Fire Islands: +20 Fire Resistance

Dwarves

The Dwarves built the first cities. They were the first enchanters and blacksmiths. In Hammerknell, they produced dark miracles of craftsmanship, and under Borrin Gammult, they fought and died for Mathosia. Now, they swing hammer and axe as Guardians, fighting the planar invaders who would rule Telara.
Special abilities:
Dwarven Breakfast: Restore health and energy over time
Miracle of Hammerknell: +20 Water Resistance

High Elves

The Elves communed with the gods in the youth of the world, blessed by long life and an affinity for the land. In return for these gifts, the gods appointed them stewards of Telara and its peoples. Those who still hold to their task are called High Elves, and work as Guardians to enforce Tavril’s will with arrow’s sting and arcane wrath.
Special abilities:
Angelic Flight: Soar briefly over medium distances
Grace of the Forest: +20 Life Resistance

Mathosians

Once rulers of the North, the Mathosians were undone by a civil war spawned by their corrupted prince, Aedraxis Mathos. Most Mathosians fought, and most who fought died, together, in a magical disaster known as the Shade. Now the survivors and their resurrected brethren strive with the Guardians for atonement and revenge.
Special abilities:
Motivational Roar: Increase group movement by 30% for a short time
Legacy of the Shade: +20 Death Resistance
Class/"Soul" System -
Souls
Souls are at the heart of the Ascended experience – from the life-leeching Warlock to the sharpshooting Marksman, they offer special traits and signature abilities mastered by the figures of Telara’s past. Players start by choosing a combination of three of these souls from one of four Callings (Warrior, Cleric, Mage, or Rogue).

RIFT - Storm Legion
[t]http://www.gamerzines.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/rift-sl_pegi.jpg[/t]
First expansion, level 51-60 + The new Storm Legion Souls (Souls also purchasable on the cash shop)
NON Copy/Paste shit -
Level 1-10 goes by quickly, once you hit level 10 you can queue for "Instant Adventures" that is essentially a group of people doing quests. This is a very quick, fun way to level. You get rewards for these also.
Mentoring System - The mentoring system lets you scale your level and stats down to whatever content you want to do - if you want to do a dungeon, but you're level 35 and your friends are level 20, you can mentor yourself to their level and get the same XP rewards, etc. This can be done for nearly anything - Rifts, Dungeons, Instant adventures, etc.
Rifts - Random mini events that go on all the time in zones, Rifts tears are spawned and either spawn Rifts after some time or when a player opens them. When opened, you fight through waves of enemies and then eventually a boss of some sort that's relevant to the nature of the Rift. More about Rifts here
Cash Shop - No P2W things - most things are vanity or boosts. Similar to GW2's. There's also an option to buy the cash shop currency and sell it to others for in game currency (Platinum)
In game events - There's always some sort of high level world event going on, but at times there are some for everyone - lower players, and higher levels that can mentor down. These events include unique rewards. There's one going on tomorrow (6/27)
Faction Separation - Guardians/Defiants can group together and be in the same guild.

There are still a lot of things I haven't experienced in this game yet (Only level 30), but if there's anything I missed tell me and I'll post them here.
I'm currently on Wolfsbane, I'll update this list with player's names and what server they are on if you want to play together.
If there's people that want to create a FP guild to play together on Wolfsbane, I'll make one for us to keep in touch.

HoliestCow - AlphaTree, Seastone Shard
Citrus705 - Iamironingmydog, Laethys Shard

Ive been waiting for a thread about this. I play on Seastone as AlphaTree(Guardian) in case anyone wants to add me.
Is this coming back to Steam ever?
Rift's media stuff is still on there so I assume so.
How does this game play? Is it standard MMOish gameplay or is it different?
It's a hotkey MMO but it's very fluid.
Its come a long way since release a couple years ago. I'm a 25 rogue / 31 warrior on the oceanic server. IGN is Iamironingmydog
Oh yeah - Defiant
One more question. Is it grindy?
One more question. Is it grindy?
"Grindy" as in doing the same thing over and over? Well, I suppose if you think killing things is grindy then yes..but there's a lot to do - Invasions, Events, Rifts, Dungeons, Instant Adventures, there's a good amount of variety.
every mmo is grindy and always will be
so if you don't mind the grind then give it a shot, if you don't like the grind then mmo's just aren't for you
I'm on the Laethys shard

Is the macro system still so broken you can throw your whole rotation down to 1-3 buttons?
I started playing this and I really like it. The Rift events are pretty fun.
Is the macro system still so broken you can throw your whole rotation down to 1-3 buttons?
Not sure, all I have for a macro is one that switches from my builder to my follow up attack
So huh....I heard that the fact you need loyalty to start an auction is a bug. Anyone know if this is true? Because I think it's pretty bullshit you can do anything in the game BUT auctions when you are not a member.
Auction House usage is for subs, but the auction house is a quality of life thing. Nothing is stopping you from selling through chat. (Which is easier anyway)
Is the macro system still so broken you can throw your whole rotation down to 1-3 buttons?
Its more restricted now, so no more one button rotations.
Someone on the Rift forums made a good explaination of what you can expect of this F2P model, what kind of limitations are most notable and such.

Added to OP
I have a level 50 Mage on Shatterbone. I haven't played in a little while, but it's a fun game overall.
So I decided to give this a shot since I'm in another one of my "Game depressions" where I like to try lots of free MMO's for whatever reason. I decided to make a dwarven bard. Any advice for starting out?
Run Instant Adventures once you hit level 10.
Man this game gets so fucking good in Storm Legion. I mean its an alright MMO up until then and in my personal opinion at least better than WoW, but man the content in storm legion is so bad ass and the way questing is now and how it interacts with the dynamic content is really cool.
Also im level 58, SO close to 60!

I was going to make a dwarf but then I saw them run. C'mon Trion, that's awful.
Can't wait to hit 50 so I can see the new Storm Legion area.
I'm a level 54 rogue bard and tactician on Shatterbone. Name Sliferjam. If anyone needs help with quests or dungeons or anything, just ask.
I was just thinking about trying it recently. Where are the European FPers playing?
