• Old abandonware or now Open source games?

I'm interested in playing some old school games. I played CnC95 for a while, since it's freeware, good nostalgia there. I also know Quake 2 is open source, but are there any more old games that are basically abandonware or have been released for free by the developers? Jus' wunderin.

Another question: Good abandonware sites?
There was one that looked promising. Then I noticed that it wasn't entirely abandonware, just old games with download links. And I wasn't happy. When I say abandonware I expect abandonware, not quake 3 and Deus Ex and crap. Those aren't abandoned. Warez are bad.
I too am interested.
ah, the days of neverhood... golden I presume www.hotud.org is still functioning? edit: brb system shock 2! eek!

Abandonware is often quite vague. You may infact be downloading something which has its copyright still intact, if you're not careful.

I'm not even sure "abbandonware" even exists when it comes to laws. It's a grey area. Also be careful with the words you use, this thread is a massive ban-trap.
The Quake 2 engine is open source, but the content files are still proprietary and commercial.

However with the advent of things like virtual console on Wii and xbox live arcade that may change.
Lets just clear this up to start with. Abandonware is not legal. You cannot say a game is freeware and claim, "It's old and unsupported, plus the developer doesn't exist anymore". Copyright laws in nearly every country last a LONG TIME. So, unless the game was made in Afghanistan or Laos(no copyright laws in those countries), don't try to say Abandonware is legal. The only legal way to get the games is if the copyright holder releases it as freeware. But then it would be freeware, not abandonware.
Who does it hurt if the developer doesn't exist?
Who does it hurt if the developer doesn't exist?
Just because the developer doesn't exist that doesn't mean that nobody holds the copyright for it. And copyrights last somewhere along the lines of 90 years.
getcha' self jazz jackrabbit 2. (+The secret files) its a platform jumping shooter game where you play as a green rabbit with a gun named jazz jackrabbit, hence the name (he is in my avatar, and the yellow rabbit is lori, jazz's sister, has a brother, spaz, but I coulden't find a picture of him) and have to stop the evil turtle devan shell. it may sound like a kids game, and that is true, its target audience is around the 10-15 range, but I assure you, i'm 13, i've been playing this game since my dad got it when i was six, and i have been playing it since then, and loved it no matter what. great replay value, great gameplay, most of all, great landscapes, and guess what. EACH WORLD HAS ITS OWN AWESOME TECHNO SONG!!! it is an awesome game, and I am listening to the music right now, and you, if you like platformers, NEED, yes, NEED this game. it is an unforgettable chapter in platformer games.
On ea.com, 3 CnC games are released for free.

Freespace 2 is a nice open source, and its free. The babylon project is a nice total conversion made with it.

A lot of games that used to be considered abandoned are now for sale again - already mentioned in this thread is Freespace 2 and System Shock 2, both of which are for sale on gog.com and Steam.
