So I've been running a Bukkit server for damn near 4 years. Recently with the legal take down of Bukkit, I was scurrying for a solution on how to get updated to 1.8. Look no further than Spigot. http://www.spigotmc.org/threads/spigot-update-20140909a.29091/ Spigot is pushing forward with a new distribution system. Basically, get your hands on a copy of "Spigot build #1649". Download the Spigot patcher. Download the patched bps file. Run the converter as specified. Bam! You have a new jar file for your server that will run all of you Bukkit plugins. Hope this helps you admins recently affected by the tragedy. :)
I'm a bit out of the loop with Minecraft but doesn't Mojang kinda own Bukkit? What legal issues would there even be with that?

Only thing to bring up such idea was a tweet from one of the devs, that was later answered by both other lead devs and Jeb, which stated the work will continue.

However for us server owners there is good news, the creator of worldguard and many other coders from bukkit/forge/spigot/spout and more got together to work on a new project called Sponge that will hopefully take bukkits place just like it did hmod. It will take a while but you can read more at: http://www.reddit.com/r/spongeproject http://www.spongepowered.org
Thanks for filling in the scenario Exotic. I said bukkit is dead based solely off the fact that half the devil team blew the canapé all at once. I posted this for the sake of a quick fix. Nothing worse that 20 people blowing up your mailbox demanding fixes.

The big things is what will happen to Wolverness' code, he'll either demand that it be taken off the project or Mojang will have to cut it altogether, the result is the same. Bukkit will be in need of some serious fixing. The problem with that is only ~1/5 of the Dev team is still around, which means the idea of a potential update (although still very possible) will be a very slow thing indeed. Furthermore there is simply no guarantee that any of the other developers won't pull this exact same stunt. And because you can't really loophole the GPL license as some people seem to think, if enough people decided to do it it really would be a dead project. But only time will tell on that.
As a summary, Wolvereness kicked the bukkit and some various devs are working on a sponge.
