I have a laptop that doesn't work well with Portal 2, and was wondering if there are any console command or such to reduce the settings lower?
What kind of laptop is that?
I could run it on highest with Pentium 4, ati hd3650 and 1gb ram.
Try these that I found in the lowend.cfg for L4D1.
mat_local_contrast_enable 0
mat_disable_bloom 1
r_flashlightdepthtexture 0
mat_vignette_enable 0
r_shadowfromanyworldlight 0
r_shadowrendertotexture 0
r_shadows 1
mat_phong 0
r_shadowfromworldlights 0
r_rainparticledensity 0.35
cl_particle_fallback_multiplier 2
Cl_particle_fallback_base 3

I don't need to say the specs of my laptop if I just want lowest possible settings

Lot's of lines
Please pay attention to the mat_clipz 1 command, if it would case the game to not work properly. If that is the case, set it to 0.
Thanks I will do this when i'm home.
Holy crap, I used that autoexec.cfg file and now I have no lag whatsoever, thanks a bunch.
mat_showlowresimage 1 improves performance AND keeps the game looking good!
Don't forget to activate sv_cheats 1 first.
Don't need to in Portal 2's engine.
Can someone post pictures? I could do with a good laugh.

We had a guy on mAL who had to play though the game like this at about 10fps.

I didn't think that Portal 2 required much to perform well...
Have you tried changing the game resolution? That can really help, if not then you must have a really really bad laptop.
I've got a Pentium 4 with 2 GB of RAM and an NVidia GeForce 8400GS running XP 32bit - Would it even be worth getting Portal 2 on this monster?

I cant see any of the gels. Anyone know what command is doing this?

I had that problem too. Look at is as a memory challenge.
They show up in some places for me though.

My laptop isn't that bad, I've played all of half-life 2 and it's installments at around medium settings.
Oh, so you meant you have no lag whatsoever. So it works pretty good now?
Yes, but all of the gel's are invisible.

beggars cant be choosers.

I've heard that mat_fullbright makes gels invisible.
The weird thing is that mat_fullbright is not listed in the code that i posted. It seems like there is some code(s) that removes the lightning and does so you have to use mat_fullbright 1. I tried to set it to 0, but to no avail.
I know this post is from 2011, but its the dynamic lighting. gels require them. i had the same issue when i used the code but i got it fixed when i messed around with the dynamic commands.
P.S. i mean when gels are on a surface, they are props when in the air.
This gives me an idea, we should make a thread seeing how far down we can push the settings of FPS games.

I don't know why you had to bump a 3 year old thread to say that however

In case someone googles this problem and the thread comes up, I would assume.
