What is War Thunder?
War Thunder is a free to play MMO based on air and now ground and eventually naval combat from the 1930s to the early 1950s. Fly, drive, and (soon) captain some of the most famous and infamous battle vehicles from some of the world's most dangerous conflicts in living memory, from the Spanish Civil War, right through to the Korean War.
There are five factions within War Thunder Air Forces, the United States Navy and Army Air Forces, The Red Air Force of the Soviet Union, the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm of the United Kingdom, the Luftwaffe, and the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy forces. For tanks, only the Red Army and the German Heer of the Wehrmacht are available, with the other factions coming Soon(tm).
The game works on an economy system, vehicles must be purchased with, and damaged vehicles have to be repaired, with fat stacks of cash called Silver Lions (kittens!), and they must be unlocked through research points. Research points can be earned by any vehicle for any vehicle within its type and nation (tanks can't research planes, but any german plane can research any german plane). Researching vehicles is more efficient with vehicles within or before its era, and even more so if you use the vehicle that is before the vehicle in the tree you wish to unlock. ie, unlocking the Spitfire Mk2 is easier with the Spitfire Mk1 than it is with the Hurricane. Each vehicle is in one of 5 "eras" (this does not affect matchmaking), and you need X (more as you go up) amount of vehicles to unlock the next era.
Splashing Cash
War Thunder uses a premium account system similar to World of Whatever games. You buy time with another currency Golden Eagles (birdies!). During this time, you get bonus research points and monies. Birdies can also be spent on premium vehicles, which are lendlease, captured, or minor variants of other vehicles in game. Any vehicle in the game can also be "turned into" a premium vehicle by purchase of a Talisman in its upgrade menu, which makes it spit out double the research points.
Again, like World of Whatever games, you gain "free XP" that can be converted to quickly unlock vehicles. Premium Vehicles are better though.
Gamemodes in War Thunder -- Planes
There are three game modes in War Thunder, with varying degrees of realism and difficulty.
Arcade
Easiest mode. Vehicle handling and characteristics are much much simpler, you can respawn in another vehicle, you spawn in the air, there is mild aiming assistance, you can reload mid air, and aircraft cannot stall. Rewards are at their lowest here, but so are repair costs. This is where you should learn to play. You either play Ground Strike (bomb out all the enemy vehicles or bases) or Domination (Capture Airbases and hold them).
Realistic
Formerly Historical Battles. Flight models are as realistic as possible (or, as realistic as the devs have bothered to, unfinished game etc), aircraft can stall, the engines can overheat and die, or even cut out from negative-G forces. Your ammo is finite, you don't respawn, and you have to takeoff (some vehicles like heavy bombers get airstarts). Airfields are much more important, being the only place you can get ammo and repair your aircraft. Maps are much bigger here too, with more objective types.
Simulator
Formerly Full Real Battles. Very very similar to Realistic, but with one big twist: You are locked to a cockpit view, you have no HUD or icons marking enemy vehicles, and the instructor system is disabled. Joystick, Mouse-joy, or nothing. It's really suggested you do your homework before jumping into this game mode, it's pretty hardcore. The game supports Occulus Rift, so if you have one of those, this is REALLY FUN.

Gamemodes in War Thunder -- Ground Forces
Tanks are very early in their days, as of yet, and all of them are very similar, they all use the same maps, . However, there are some major differences.
Arcade
There's an aiming indicator that helps you compensate for shell drop, tanks are ever so slightly more durable, field repairs are faster than the other game modes, and handling characteristics are more forgiving. A lot of the faster tanks are able to go full Tokyo Drift with a bit of momentum. Easiest mode, again.
Realistic
Removal of the aiming indicator, but opponents still have icons. Repairs take longer, and tanks are much heavier, and slower to accelerate.
Simulator
Feature incomplete as of yet, some views are unfinished, and changing gears is not mandatory as it is planned to be. Icons are removed, and the player's perspective is locked to the commander's hatch and the sniper scope. As opposed to aircraft Simulator Battles, Tank Sim is extremely popular, offering a much more intense and tactical experience than the other game modes due to the lack of icons encouraging stealth.
Customisation and Modding
War Thunder features multiple ways for you (yeah, you, cunt) to create content. Skinning aircraft is as easy as using the template tool in game and fiddling with it in photoshop, and there's an easy to use Mission and Map editor, for creating singleplayer levels and scenarios. The CDK can be found on their website.
Gaijin have also put up a website where the community can upload all their skins, missions, videos, you name it. Check it out, bruv:

War Thunder is fucking gorgeous while also being incredibly well optimised. It can be turned down to run on any old shitbox while also being able to rival any triple A game in visual quality.

General tips and shit to have a less bad time
Planes:
- It's easier to engage an enemy if you have either a speed advantage or altitude advantage starting a fight.
- Some aircraft perform well at certain altitudes. Russian Aircraft, for example, do not have superchargers, and perform their best below 3000m. You will find a similar effect in early jets, like the DH.100 Vampire, the Me-262 Schwalbe.
- Diving at high speeds makes your controls more sluggish. Don't tear your wings off, or go into a dive you can't pull out of in time.
- Learn to "Boom and Zoom". Turning or trying to dogfight when you can stay above an opponent and make high speed passes on them wastes valuable speed and energy.
- If an enemy is behind you, and you are more agile than them, do a tight, weaving criss-cross pattern of turns, left and right. If they try to follow you, you will be able to get some shots off on their roof, and eventually get behind them.
- If an enemy is behind you, and you have a better roll rate, start a very tight barrel roll to force an overshoot.
- Although the lack of tracers can make it more difficult to aim, Stealth ammunition allows you to fire on a target for a few seconds before they realise you are attacking them, granting you a few extra moments of firing time.
- Don't rely on the AI gunners for the love of god.
Assorted Tank Tips
Never count on shrugging hits off.
A lot of people goes into a tank game and expect that their vehicle is an indestructible fortress of doom. Forget that. Your tank will be, 90% of time, vulnerable to all enemies it meets, at least on particular spots or at certain angles. Your survival relies on tactics and oftentimes, tank vs tank standoff is more of a wild west duel - the one who lands a good hit survives. Whenever you decide you can expose yourself to a shot, it's always a risk, and you are always at best working with solid odds. Forgetting this will lead to disappointment.
And no, Tigers aren't invincible. King Tigers only less so.
Don't underestimate mobility.
The maps are mostly quite complex with plenty of cover and various flanking tracks. Whenever possible, you want to flank - you want to shoot the enemy while his gun isn't pointed at you. It's often far better to spend 30 seconds taking a detour and taking a sure and safe kill shot, rather than get an immediate chance of a shot which puts you in danger and gives you no advantage. Likewise, if an enemy backs off around a corner, don't count on them staying there and waiting. They might be on their way to your rear, already.
Become ballistics turbosperg or go home.
Seriously, as painful as that sounds, and is, you need to learn a lot about your gun, the guns of your enemies, the INVIDIUAL AMMO TYPES for these guns, and finally, the outer armor layout, as well as the inner module layout. If you shoot a plane SOMEWHERE, with SOMETHING, it will eventually drop off the sky. Tanks aren't like that. If you shoot with the wrong stuff at the wrong part of the wrong tank, you likely won't do anything whatsoever, and it will feel bad. A surprising amount of info many people know from WoT still applies, armour and module wise. The most basic advice is; don't shoot HE (pure high explosive) shells at tanks, sides and rear are less protected than the front, and armor plate which you are hitting at an angle is significantly more resilient against your attacks, but trust me. Still, there's a lot to learn if you want to get good.
Also Tu-2 is best plane.
so no combine ops yet? and stug 3 a is op
Combine ops WERE available in the closed beta, but they apparently didn't make it into OBT at this point. They are likely going to put it in once the battle meta is a bit more finished.
Also; Anybody who suffers from POOR PERFORMANCE mainly when playing tanks, disable grass rendering (pull the slider all the way to left). For some reason, their grass is insanely unoptimized. Even me with my GTX760 run it without grass (it also makes aiming less pain in the ass anyway)
Took way too long for thread to come back, was scared and wept.

They don't want the people who are just starting to play to start bitching because they got bombed.

That came to my mind but honestly the battles that were basically German tanks only vs Soviet planes only weren't exactly too good.

And neither is having B-17s and other heavy bombers carpet bomb the Axis Spawnpoints and control points.
They're probably waiting until they add more anti-air vehicles.

Good thing there are no American tanks or captured Russian B-17s yet.
Is tank matchmaking better now than it was in events beta, because the events MM sucked, nightly server was better
also my ground crew skills didn't get wiped.
Still got 20 mins ETA on the new update download. Otherwise, how are people liking the new update so far?
Is tank matchmaking better now than it was in events beta, because the events MM sucked, nightly server was better
Hard to tell right now because there's not many vehicles beyond the reserve ones at this point.
oh my shit
In the midst of me hyping about tanks, I read the post.

You're probably going to have a few higher tier tanks killing lower tier ones for the first few days, kinda expected until the rest of the players can catch up.
I hope we look back at this thread and be like...
"wow only 2 nations now we have 4 with over 200 tanks"

I am clubbing Komets and CL-13s in the fucking Vampire. My life is complete.
Grind towards the Hetzer has begun.
Was that the final wipe for tanks?

Daw.
I am clubbing Komets and CL-13s in the fucking Vampire. My life is complete.
Is it actually good now? Any time I hear vampire buff my mind just switches the word to nerf, I don't think any plane was nerfed as hard as the vampire was.
German T1 tanks are painful to grind. I am doing well, capturing objectives and getting shit for it.
[editline]15th May 2014[/editline]
But it is still fun as hell. Gimme the tiger already
Tip for anyone that is playing german tanks : stop playing german tanks and go play soviets
T-34's can get in t1 matches and the only thing that can stop them is a stug a, and you need HEAT rounds.
T-50's are so bugged they might as well be T-34's
And then there's that T-34 prototype gift which a lot of people have, which is also a T-34
In short : if you are playing in a pz2, pz3, pz4, you have no chance against half the enemy team

lol
Say that to any german tank after the Pz III M
Holy shit the recoil on the B-25 75mm
the whole plane jerks to the left and you lose 5kph
What game are you guys playing? I'm getting 4-6 kills per life in German reserve tanks in simulator mode. The 20mm absolutely wrecks the T-26 and BT-7.
Is it actually good now? Any time I hear vampire buff my mind just switches the word to nerf, I don't think any plane was nerfed as hard as the vampire was.
You are dragged down super hard by Aces in their F-86s and F-80s chasing bots all day but you can dogfight literally any jet in the game, it's super agile. Its climb rate has more than doubled, and it can actually reach its real top speed now.
mmm that hetzer is sexy as fuck
Was that the final wipe for tanks?
I should think so, they never wiped planes in OBT
