Distance is a PC/Mac survival racing game that combines the intense action of arcade racing with the exploration of an atmospheric world.
You control a unique car that allows you to boost, jump, rotate, and even fly through a chaotic and twisted city.
The world has a mysterious history, and as you explore you'll be able to uncover pieces of its past.

The roads are treacherous and unpredictable with obstacles around every corner.
Instead of doing laps on a loop, you'll be trying to survive to the end in the quickest time.
Since your car has several abilities, it allows you to not only drive fast on the track but also upside down and on buildings and walls!
You can also fly to discover new shortcuts and paths

You can take on the roads alone, or in multiplayer with your friends!

The game is a spiritual successor to the multi-award winning game Nitronic Rush, created by ourselves and 8 others while attending DigiPen Institute of Technology.
It was released in 2011 on PC, and it was widely praised for its innovative mechanics, visual style, audio design, and atmosphere.

Since we've created a game similar to this before, we're building upon what players found fun in the previous game, and taking that to the next level.
Our primary focus is on making the solo and multiplayer tracks incredibly fun,
which means that there's much that we're iterating on in terms of designing a deeper city and atmosphere,
as well as experimenting with different game modes, obstacles, and track designs.

On top of the many features and modes in the original game,
such as the parkour-inspired Hardcore mode, nail-biting Challenge mode, and heart-pounding Stunt mode,
we're now including many fan-requested features that weren't possible before:
Multiplayer:
LAN and Online play in several modes, such as Classic Race mode as well as Tag, Capture The Flag, Stunt mode, and many others.
We're targeting to support as many players as is fun for each game mode!
Level editor and modding tools:
We're developing a powerful, user-friendly level editor where you can create levels from inside the game and share them with players around the world.
We'll also be releasing other tools used to create content in the game in an effort to best support modders.
Exploration:
Since the car can jump, rotate, and fly, you're able to explore the city to find hidden paths, as well as find secrets that reveal the city's past.
Fans loved this aspect of Nitronic Rush and really want to develop a deeper city with a backstory of its own. Updated visuals and atmosphere:
The game is now being developed in Unity (as compared to creating Nitronic Rush entirely from scratch).
This allows us to mature a lot of visual elements, and really go for a detailed look that supports the atmospheric world we’re building
New dynamic soundtrack:
Jordan (aka TORCHT) is back composing a new electro/ambient dynamic soundtrack.
Expanding upon his experience from composing the dynamic music in Nitronic Rush (as well as in Solace and Solstice),
he's really excited to create a new sophisticated soundscape.
Controller support:
Similar to Nitronic Rush we'll be supporting Xbox 360™ controllers and the keyboard,
but we'll also be doing our best to support as many controllers as possible,
such as steering wheels and various gamepads, alongside re-mappable key configurations.
PC and Mac:
Distance will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Holy fuck, Nitronic Rush was amazingly fun, I'll pay for an actual game based off of it for sure.
Better put the link to the kickstarter in the OP.
The game looks kickass. Hope it hits funding.
Also holy shit the guy in the monster shirt in the kickstarter video. That was just weird as hell.
Not enough TRON bloom 0/10 would not buy. I would buy though.
I showed my teacher Nitronic Rush a month ago, he fell in love with it.
I walk in today going to tell him about Distance, he then proceeds to say he already backed $100.
I will most likely pitch in, I just hope they have all of the crucial people from the original team.
I'm glad they got the same sound artist as before, but I also hope they have the same vocalist to play the role of a stunt announcer.
Personally, I loved Nitronic rush, and I like the style of how this title is going, but I hope they make it more colorful and brighter.
I personally like that it doesn't have as much bloom.

Couple of new updates from the kickstarter, thought I might as well post them here.

Project Update #1
10/17/12
Hi everyone! First off,
Wow, you guys are awesome!!!
Thanks for going out there and being the first to back Distance! It means the world to us and from the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

We're off to a great start so far, raising around $15,000 on the first day and picking up backers quickly! Yesterday was a ton of fun for us watching as everyone continued to pour in support. We didn't get much sleep the night before because we were wrapping up things for the launch. It was a pretty long day, but well worth it. It's unreal how positive the reaction has been and how much excitement is surrounding the game already.
#SURVIVETHEDISTANCE
This is only the beginning and there's still a long ways to go. We're doing our best to spread the word about everything, but we need your help. We took the time to prepare a page that you can check out here to help spread the word about Distance. It includes Distance avatars for twitter and/or any forums you may use, as well as Facebook profile pictures and cover photos!

Let's get Greenlit!
A lot of you have requested it, so we're excited to say that Distance is now on Steam Greenlight! You can check it out and upvote it here. Currently we're using the Kickstarter video on that page but we'll be updating it to a gameplay video as soon as we finish making one :)

Project Update #2
10/20/12
22% to Being Funded
Just wanted to thank all of you again, and let you know that Distance is 22% of the way to being funded! Your tweets, Facebook posts, and comments have all been continually encouraging.
We've noticed a lot of comments saying that we should easily make our goal, but we'll still need your help to get there. Even though our first couple of days were pretty successful, we're starting to slow down a bit. Historically, word of mouth is one of the biggest ways Kickstarters spread, so if you know anyone who can support the project please tell them about it! You can post about it on any of your favorite social media sites, any forums you browse, or create a YouTube video showing your excitement.
If you do post something, make sure to send it to us! Another really simple way to help is to visit our...
Reddit AMA!
By popular request, we'll be doing a Reddit AMA (Q&A) tomorrow (10/21) at 5:00pm PST. Many of our original fans came from Reddit, so we've always loved that community and want to give back there. If you have any more questions or if you know anyone who was a fan of Nitronic Rush and has questions, feel free to check out our AMA and ask then.
You can help us by simply upvoting the post when it goes live tomorrow: http://reddit.survivethedistance.com
So, How'd The Week Go?
It was a pretty busy week but we're having fun. We've been trying our hardest to reach out and contact our friends, family, community members, and press. You can check out the latest news roundup here:

Over the past couple days Jason and Kyle took a short break from answering questions to work on the actual game. Jason worked on optimizing the spline mesh track generation (which sped up loading times quite a bit), as well as polishing various tools within the level editor such as the object properties window. Kyle's been tweaking the camera and car controls based off of some of the feedback we've received. He's working on continually improving the speed and feel of the car.

We're also working on a gameplay trailer to show off more of the game! When it's released we'll make sure to share it in an upcoming update.
80% of the Way to the Top 100 on Greenlight
Steam Greenlight has been going great so far, and we're already 80% of the way to the Top 100 (out of 852 total games)! If you haven't said Yes to Distance, you can by going to our Greenlight page here.
Stay Connected
Last but not least, we'd love to stay connected with you! You can follow the team on Twitter and/or like us on Facebook for more frequent news updates.

Quick update
Our Reddit AMA is now live here: http://bit.ly/TKX2cr. We'll be answering questions for quite a while, so if you could swing by and help out by upvoting the post, we have a good shot at reaching more of our initial players.
To those that already posted about the AMA or asked questions so far, thanks again for the help!

Project Update #4
10/24/12
Progress so far
It's finally time for a backer-only update! Thanks again for believing in us to make this game, and we're incredibly excited to have you along for the ride. We've eclipsed the 1,000 backer mark, currently sitting at 1,059 backers (27% of the goal) and #76 (out of 865) on Steam Greenlight. While we don't know much about how Greenlight actually works underneath, here's the data they do give us:

Since you were one of our first backers, I put together some PC/Mac/iPhone/iPad wallpapers created from our poster image!

You also can listen to the music from the Kickstarter video/teaser trailer on SoundCloud, as well as on MP3 (320kbps) and FLAC below. It's still an early version for what might make it into the game, so I'd love to hear your feedback on it. You can also check out music I've done for Nitronic Rush and The Fourth Wall while on SoundCloud.

I've also been working on a spin off of that track which we're thinking of using for the upcoming gameplay trailer. It's still very much a work in progress, but I'd love to hear your opinions on it. I basically wanted something more upbeat since I felt the previous track was fairly laid back. This one fuses some of the feelings from the Commander Update track a ways back, but has a bunch of new sounds borrowed from my newer tracks (like the one above). You can check it out here:

Mini Dev Diary
Our Reddit AMA went really well, thanks again to everyone that came out and had fun with us. We set it up so that Kyle and Jason were answering questions via Google Docs while I was frantically pasting them into the response window and trying to answer a few of my own. If we do something like it again down the road, we'll make sure to post it here first.
We also had some decent press coverage since the last update. We've still been pushing really hard to get the word out, and we've done some really cool interviews that should (hopefully) be coming out this week. Here's the latest round-up:
Destructoid: http://bit.ly/XVODY2
Shacknews: http://bit.ly/QOHoMk (interview)
TIGSource: http://bit.ly/RWDe5X
BebopVox: http://bit.ly/XVOzas
The TIGSource post exists because one of our backers (Shinji16) made a post in the TIGSource forums and it got promoted to the front page. All of your posts, shares, likes, and retweets really do help, so keep them up!
A big focus for us right now is wrapping up an improved gameplay video that shows more of the game (and helps us share the game with press). We're also working on finishing up the Distance forum for everyone to more easily share their thoughts on the game. Those should both be available in the next update.
Also, thanks to many of you who bumped up your pledges recently! Every little bit helps, so upping your pledge obviously makes a big difference. As usual, here's the links to everything shareable for Distance:
nitronic rush was the funnest 15 minutes ever
There is a LOT more content than just 15 minute's worth, especially if you go and work on getting a good time on every single track.
Also, I'm really afraid of this not getting enough funding in time, I really hope they make the goal.
I don't know if I should post the download links to the songs, but I did provide the links to the SoundCloud. I hope it's okay for me to post this, but I want them to reach their goal.
I just wondered right now if developers that already created a successful game on kickstarter still use kickstarter as a main funding source and not the funds that have been generated by the previous game.
Might depend on the financial situation of the studio, but I hope that developers do not exploit this in any way to gain additional funding.
I like how the HUD is on the car itself.

Well, I meant other games. My question was not really related to this thread. To be honest, my question is pretty irrelevant to this game.
Update 5
Driving Forward

Yesterday we woke up excited to see someone going for the $5,000 tier! That helped to push us to being 36% funded with a total of 1,284 backers. We are also continuing to climb on Steam Greenlight and we're now at #68.
Gameplay Trailer!
There have been a number of requests for us to release a gameplay trailer. We're excited to say that after crunching on it for much of the week, it's finally done and you can check it out below! We're really curious what you think of it so far, so feel free to leave comments about it here. We also updated the Kickstarter video with some of this footage so that it shows off more of the gameplay.
Make sure to share the new video with everyone and anyone that you can!
Mini Dev Diary
Most of this week was busy with the three of us recording everything for the gameplay trailer and editing it for release (on top of the normal press outreach we've been doing). On Friday night we also experimented with broadcasting the creation of a relatively simple casual level in our pre-alpha level editor. It was a ton of fun, and also great chatting with several of you that night. You can check out our last broadcast by visiting Refact's Twitch.tv channel.
We're going to be broadcasting more tomorrow around 12:00pm noon (PST) and then again around 6:00pm (PST) to hopefully cover many of our U.S. and European backers' time zones, so feel free to join us at those times! We'll either be creating another level and showing more of the level editor, or possibly Jason or Jordan working on some new art/music.
We also set up the official forums for Distance! You should check it out if you'd like to start reading or discussing topics about the game. We're still working on the theme and we'll be adding more to it through the week, but we wanted to get it out there for everyone. We'd love to set up the private discussion forums as well, but since we don't have direct access to your email addresses yet we'll have to wait until the Kickstarter is finished.
We had some more press coverage this week. We're still doing everything we can to get the word out about the game, and hopefully the new gameplay trailer will help with that. If you'd like to check it out, here is the latest round up:

As always, thanks so much for backing this project and supporting us. We're inching closer and closer to being fully funded, realizing our dream of staying independent, and being able to work on the game we're most passionate about. Everyday has been a battle for us so far and we're glad to have you on our side.
There's still a ways to go so we'll keep spreading the word the best we can. Thanks again!

Update 6
Happy Halloween!
We hope your night is filled with many thrills and chills! Here in Seattle we have a bit of both since it’s pretty rainy and chilly tonight, but it adds to the atmosphere quite nicely.
If you haven't had the chance to see our newest gameplay trailer, or if you'd like to see it again, you can check it out below. It's a fun way to show the game to others, so please share it on Facebook/Twitter and post it on your favorite forums if you haven't already. While we're at it, another easy way to help spread the word about Distance is to share its predecessor Nitronic Rush with your friends since it's a free download!
Over the next few updates we'd like to give you a window into what we've been thinking about internally for design possibilities and ideas for Distance. When we look at game design we’re really driven by implementation over theoretical design. That’s why we love to test things out in a prototype before we can commit to a bunch of specific features that we don’t know are fun or not yet.
The game is still early in development and design, so all of this is subject to change and there are no guarantees that all of this will make it into the final game. We just simply want to share with you some ideas we have for certain elements in the game so far.
World and Atmosphere Design
Since there aren't many racing games that push to have a mysterious world with a backstory, it’s one of the many things we’re really excited to continue developing in Distance. The game's world is heavily inspired by mysterious universes like in Half Life 2, Tron: Legacy, and Halo. Distance is set in an oppressed futuristic dystopian city where it’s unclear whether or not humans still exist.
The city is broken up into different sectors such as an industrial area, a broken apart downtown, an underground tunnel facility, a construction area, and a city core light tower. From what we can tell it’s been overruled and operated by a corrupted government for many years now.

These are just a couple of the overarching pieces that allow us to think about the functionality of the world, and what gives meaning to buildings and other elements within it. If you have any comments on these ideas definitely let us know in the comment section below!
Progress this week
Today marks the halfway point for the funding window on Kickstarter. Currently we sit at 40% funded and we finally hit $50,000! We still have a long ways to go but it's definitely not insurmountable and we can do it! While Jason's been working on a sketch of the backer vehicle, Jordan and I have been emailing press all day every day since launching the new video. Luckily some have already written about it:

Update 7
Time for Change
With only two weeks left and 58% still to go, we feel it’s time to change things up. We've been spending every waking minute since launching this campaign to spread the word to press and original fans of Nitronic Rush, but it’s not enough. We’re going to be putting out a lot more updates about the project from here on out, and we’ll need your help to share them with the world.
Before I get too far, I want to say to everyone who’s expressed concern over us making the goal, bumped up their pledges, and have been writing and sharing the game online, your belief in this project means everything to us. It really gives us the encouragement to push forward everyday, since we know that you'll be as devastated as us if we can't make this game.
New Additions: Linux support, split-screen, and a new tier!
We’re excited to announce that Distance will officially be supported on Linux! We tested Distance using the Unity 4 beta, and we feel confident that we can safely bring Distance to Linux. You can read more about the Unity 4 Linux support by checking out their FAQ page here. For those of you who are Linux users, please help by reaching out to the Linux community and let them know that this game exists!
On top of that, we're announcing the official addition of split-screen to Distance. We took the time to test it out because we believe it's something severely lacking from most racing games today, and we're excited to have it be a part of the action in Distance. Right now we're looking at 2-4 players, but we'll keep experimenting to see what works best for each mode.

We've also been listening to your comments and we're adding a new tier to our campaign! There is now a $35 tier for anyone who wants the backer vehicle but doesn't want two copies of the game. It will include everything at the $25 tier plus the backer vehicle. If you already pledged for something below $35 remember that you can easily bump up your pledge by clicking the blue "Manage Your Pledge" button on Distance's Kickstarter page.
Remember that this vehicle is only available for Kickstarter backers, and never available again to anyone else down the road. Jason’s been working on a concept sketch for it which you can see below. It’s still a work in progress, but it gives a glance at what the car may look like when it’s modeled:

Clarifications: Two copies of the game for $70+, DRM-free copies
We realized that at all $70+ tiers you only get one copy of the game by getting all of the things in the $25 tier. We're bumping it up so that you'll be getting everything at the $50 tier, which means everyone $70+ will be getting two copies of the game and the backer vehicle.
We also want to clarify that you'll always be able to get the game DRM-free! We're doing our best to get onto as many digital distribution platforms as possible, and we're doing well on Steam Greenlight so you’ll most likely be able to download it on Steam at launch. No matter what though, you'll be able to get a copy of Distance DRM-free direct download (like Nitronic Rush) if you prefer.
We’re going to hold off and post more about the design ideas in the next Update since we felt this post was getting long and this information was more important for now. Thanks again for being awesome!
- Kyle, Jordan, and Jason

I don't get it. I *TRIED* those media tags. Oh well, thanks man! ;D
Update 8:
After announcing Linux support and split-screen we had a noticeable spike of new backers! We also saw that after releasing the new $35 tier many of you bumped up your pledges. As we've mentioned before, bumping up means a lot to us and helps everyone get that much closer to our goal. We're now 50% funded with 11 days to go, so it’s time to ramp it up and finish strong!
How You Can Help
Over the next few days we’ll be continuing to create new content and send the latest updates to various press. Since many of you have asked, here are some specific things you can do that would be incredibly helpful:

1. First, change your Kickstarter avatar! Right click the image above, "Save link as..." somewhere on your computer, and set your avatar to spread the love! On Kickstarter, you can change it by clicking on Me -> Edit Settings -> Picture. Change your profile picture on Facebook, Twitter, and forums to show your support and help reach a larger audience!
2. Tweets and Facebook posts are cheap, easy, and can go a long way. Tweet gamers, writers, YouTubers, and anyone that you think might like to check out the game.

3. Reach out to your communities! If you are a member of a Mac or Linux gaming community share the Kickstarter page with them. If you are a member of any racing game community, like Wipeout, Trackmania, or Carmageddon, please also share this with them as they particularly may be interested in a game like Distance!
4. One of the most powerful things you can do is to send a tip to gaming sites like Joystiq, Machinima, IGN, GamesRadar, CVG, GameSpy, GameSpot, Ars Technica, GameZone, etc. and simply write why you're excited about Distance and why you personally backed it! You can also send along the press kit which includes images and videos to make their lives easier.
Upcoming events

Tomorrow, Monday the 5th at 11am PST, 2pm EST, 6pm GMT, we're inviting everyone to tweet together about the Distance kickstarter. You can use the hashtag #survivethedistance, and we recommend linking to the Kickstarter, as well as asking others to retweet you.
Tuesday, Nov 6th, at 11am PST / 2pm EST / 6pm GMT, Jordan (voice of the Nitronic Rush announcer) will be doing a Reddit AMA-ish post as the announcer from Nitronic Rush. It’s essentially an AMA where you can ask the announcer anything, including asking him to say a specific phrase, and we’ll post responses as audio files! Links for that will be coming soon.
If you have any recommendations or things you'd like to see in next few updates let us know! We're more than willing to change up the campaign due to feedback so please let us know if you think there's something we can improve. Here's everything shareable again:

Update 9
Reddit Post!
First off, go UPVOTE this post here!
http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/12rh6y/im_the_voice_of_the_nitronic_rush_announcer_ama/
We had planned for the Reddit post today at 11am, but due to some problems with my web hosting (an outage in our data center taking down pretty much all of websites including the forum) we didn't have a way to host the audio files until now.
Reddit has always shown a positive response since it was where much of the initial fan base for Nitronic Rush originated, so let's get this post out in front of them! Bring an interesting phrase for me to say and respond with an audio clip. Make sure to upvote the ones you like the most!

Reminders
There are now 10 days left with about 48% to go. Most successful campaigns do have a strong start, a slowdown in the middle, and a big spike at the end, so we still believe it's possible to make it. It's happened several times in the past for others, but we're needing to battle like never before to overcome the slump we're currently in.
Simply doing the 4 things listed in the previous update HERE will help immensely, so please change your Kickstarter avatar and check out how else you can easily share Distance. Also make sure to stay connected via Facebook, Twitter, and our forum.
Halo 4 Plug
Also, we just wanted to say congrats to Chin Fong (the artist behind the beautiful concept art on our Kickstarter page) for releasing Halo 4 today! He's an environment artist on the game, and you can check out some of the amazing work he did in Halo by visiting his blog here: http://chinfongart.blogspot.com/. Once the campaign's over, we can't wait to play the game.

The whole reddit post thing was basically them taking user requests for having the guy who voiced the "announcer" in Nitronic Rush say the things they wanted in that voice.
Jordan, the guy who posted this voices the announcer and made the music for Nitronic Rush.
