Welcome to Facepunch's very own Horror games Megathread! I thought this thread would be worthy of people's time due to the increase of Horror Games in today's gaming market (mostly thanks to our indie developers). But it's not just for talking about current Horror Games, in this thread we can talk about all ages of games from the genre, dating way back to Clock Tower on the snes, through the silent hill/resident evil era, right into the awful flash games (although sometimes quite good) jump scare games, and into today's Amnesia approach of video games. To me, playing a Horror game is just like going on a Rollercoaster for the first time. You really don't want to go through it, but when you do, you're probably not going to regret doing it. Thread music! Popular Horror Games include Nightmare House 2 Awesome, well made source-mod for Half Life 2, lots of scares, great written story and great levels, check it out. http://nh2.wecreatestuff.com/ Underhell Another great half life 2 source mod, awesome atmosphere. http://www.moddb.com/mods/underhell Ghoul's Forest - Doom Mod A Doom Mod that's horror is only amplified by the limitations of the Doom Engine. Fucking awesome scares, non-stop heart pounding enjoyment if you're capable of the odd cheap jumpscares now and then. http://zdoom.org/wiki/The_Ghoul's_Forest_series Here's also a list of great free indie stuff. Your job is to find enough data to uncover the truth behind the strange disappearance of everyone stationed on the Lunar Research Station. It looks fucking AWESOME. Feel free to post reviews, in-game media or just general discussions on whatever's made you shit your pants lately!
One game I suggest everyone keep their eye out for is Routine.
I don't see Nightmare House or Underhell featured anywhere in the OP. What's up with that? They're classic, renowned, and immensely popular Sourcemod horror games.

[editline]22nd June 2014[/editline] added them
You should also add Afraid of Monsters : Directors cut to the list. I personally liked it more than Cry of Fear and I think more people should give it a go http://www.moddb.com/mods/afraid-of-monsters-dc
The first jump scare in Cry of Fear The door one deterred me from playing it, but that was like a year ago. I should probably get around to playing it, it seems very Silent Hill inspired so I'm definitely interested in giving it another go. I'll get that added too.
Every horror game I've ever played I think are really bad because they didn't focus on making the gameplay entertaining or they were really bad at being scary. Like, the scariest game I've ever played is Dark Souls, but that's because of the weighty game design, not the overall atmosphere or theme. So recommend me some legit super scary horror games.
If you want another Doom level set (there are some excellent ones out there and I can't recall most), add/consider Unloved. It's got mostly the same raw gameplay, but really depressing levels and a few new enemies. Excellent music and asthetics for mostly a few zDoom tricks. There's no game I've played that does a better job with atmosphere than those games. Primarily, check out 2 and 3. My favourites from the series. You can get them up and running on Windows 7/8 with just a few mods and get them fully functioning with an x-padder set up for your 360 controller (if you're really inclined) that's how I played them, and I fucking loved them. They're not jumpscares, it relies very little on them and more on making you feel 100% discomfort in the atmosphere you're in, also that and the story, it's awesome you'll get pulled into the lore straight away. Dead Space is also a good horror game series (in my opinion) the gunplay's really satisfying and the thought of being completely isolated in space is pretty terrifying in it's own right. That and the hallucinations you'll have throughout the games are pretty fucking terrifying. It's also rather difficult, I find it's a great survival horror because you barely make it out of certain situations alive, it was a constant struggle for me and that's why I thought beating it was so rewarding Also Resident Evil 4? If you enjoy the horror of feeling like you're constantly going to be fucked then go for that. It relies on no jumpscares, just purely adrenaline based "OH FUCK OH FUCK" gameplay where you're put in situations you'll think you wont survive in and you'll strategize on what the best way to get through certain areas. As well as doing a few puzzles. It's the best in the franchise for a reason. If you're looking for great gameplay, generally steer clear of Amensia type games such as Outlast, where there's no combat just running (Although, I don't mind it, I play these games just generally for a great time)
I remember seeing the Among the Sleep trailer a long time ago, didn't know it was out. Is it worth buying? [editline]23rd June 2014[/editline]
Check out Silent Hill, the combat's not great, but the puzzles are very entertaining.
I loved the old silent hill combat, once you get used to it. It's clunky and nuanced but it's got a rhythm to it, one you can master.
I remember seeing the Among the Sleep trailer a long time ago, didn't know it was out. Is it worth buying?
I do feel like the pricetag is a little steep for what you get. It's not a very long game, it's kind of short actually. But the story you get is pretty heartbreaking, not too thought provoking but it kind of lasted for me for a little while and was very cleverly done thinking back to it. The atmosphere is great, it mixes childlike imagination with some real twisted dark shit. The puzzles are kind of average, they're not too hard and you can kind of guess what you're supposed to do, it's finding the items for certain puzzles that gets a little confusing. If you enjoy games where you feel like you're constantly being followed/watched or games where you're constantly trying to piece together a story while you're playing it out, check it out, maybe when it's on sale though.
Oh man that Routine trailer. I love the way you have the nightvision on your tool so you can see what's in the dark but it has a low framerate and you can only see that tiny square, makes seeing something coming towards you out of the dark that much scarier because you only can catch a glimpse
Routine is the one I'm waiting the most for. God the atmosphere in that game is amazing.
I don't know why, but the fact that the scope on your laser gun thing is laggy is so awesome. It's like 80's space movie horror gone real serious.
Steams got a community sale on Atmospheric Horror right now. Go get on it.
You should put Realms of the Haunting somewhere on that list. Its a pretty awesome but generally unknown (I think) first person horror game set in a huge mansion with demons and ghosts and shit. Its also like 70 hours long and weird as fuck. You can get it on GoG I believe.

I mean, what's there to be afraid of when you put a shotgun in my hands? I couldn't even finish it because I got so bored to tears. I'll definitely check out Silent Hill and Dead Space though.
I don't play many horror games compared to other genres but Dead Space 1&2 are excellent. It becomes a pain in the ass when elite versions show up because they're not fun to kill but it wasn't that bad since I had upgraded damage to compensate. Amnesia:TDD is one I really liked because although I was too scared to play most of the time, I forced myself to get through it because it was very interesting. I am really, really interested in Routine
One of my personal favorites, and it's also one of the most flawed gems It is plagued by horrid optimization and repetitive FPS gameplay but what it tries to do in making an decaying urban environment makes it an engrossing experience. The score alone by Justin Lassen really makes it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9hbCfJnxwU&list=PLyLrfxRkzcd7KKNfeQMB7BEPyexA4kJXU&index=13 You'll need Unreal Tournament 2004 in order to play it though. http://www.moddb.com/mods/out-of-hell Note the patch removes the scanline filter and it really doesn't improve the overall perfomance, aside from the addition of fog slider that is.
Looks almost like the grindhouse of games, pretty cool.
This reminds me, what ever happened to that horror game Volition was supposed to do with Guillermo Del Toro? Did that die off when THQ sunk?
So I should try Underhell if I am after being scared?
This reminds me, what ever happened to that horror game Volition was supposed to do with Guillermo Del Toro? [editline]22nd June 2014[/editline]
So I should try Underhell if I am after being scared?
I personally haven't played it but try it out and see if its for you. Nightmare House 2 has both games in the dualogy and those games are filled with cleverly done scares.

Lone survivor is on sale Yes or pass?
Lone survivor is on sale Yes or pass?
Go for it I got a couple of minutes with it and I loved it. Its made by Jasper Byrne one of the dudes who worked on hotline Miami soundtrack. Its some great work for a dude who used to specialise in making just BGM. It's fun its just pure survival.
So I should try Underhell if I am after being scared?
Underhell alternates between adrenaline fear and atmospheric/jump scares. You'll get the former during most of Chapter One, and the latter whenever you're in The House. It's a wicked good game though. Optimization isn't that great (will be fixed when they're done porting everything to Source 2013), and most of the voice actors (save for like four characters) are really unfitting for the characters they play, but the rest of it will blow your fucking mind. Chapter Two likely won't be done for another year, maybe longer, but based on the preview you get at the end of Chapter One, it looks very exciting.
I'm gonna save Routine for when I eventually get an Oculus Rift. I'm also gonna buy new underwear for the occasion.
If anyone wants a good horror point and click they should check out the last door series on newgrounds. I think they have all of them on steam now too.
any of you know a game or two which has the same type of gameplay as the first Amnesia and the Penumbra games? love those games so much and would love to play more of its kind. shame A Machine For Pigs ended up like it did
Machine for Pigs was okay. Short and way more story oriented, puzzles sucked, but it was okay.
