*Note: I am not one of the developers of the game. I am just posting to spread word of this fangame.* IndieGoGo page is right here. (DISCONTINUED: See reason why here.) Download the demo here. Touhou Super Smash Battles is an WIP Smash Bros. fangame based on the Touhou Project series. From what I can find, the fangame is being made on the Unity engine, and it is being developed by a three-man indie game dev group known as FromSoySauce. FromSoySauce website Youtube channel Facebook page So far, the confirmed characters for Touhou Super Smash Battles are:
Reimu Sakuya Tenshi Yuuka Shinki (First favorite maiden perk) Tewi (Second favorite maiden perk) Eiki (Third favorite maiden perk) Medicine (Fourth favorite maiden perk)
(the list is not final as more characters will be introduced later on) Confirmed stages so far are:
Hakurei Shrine Sakuya's Tower Inverted Castle Meiling's Gate Pandemonium Garden of the Sun
Confirmed Bosses so far:
Tokiko Yuugi Mima Satori Flandre
The fangame will feature mechanics similar to that of Melee while expanding on the Smash formula:
Straight out of Smash: --Tilt DI --Smash DI --Tech --Wall Jump Tech --Jump out of Shield --Fast Falling --Wave Dash --Spike --Sour Spot --Sweet Spot --Moon Walk --Dash Dance Simplified Smash mechanics: --Wave Dash (There is now a dedicated wavedash button) --L-Cancle (Hold L/R during landing lag of an aerial and the animation will speed up significantly, alternatively the landing lag can be immediately ended upon preforming any tilt, jump or wave-dash, but not a smash or a grab.) --C-Smash (If you are holding the C-Stick in a direction, and keep it held down, even in mid-animation, your maiden will try to do that smash attack as soon as she is free to do another animation) --Shield Break (ther is no shield meter so you can not break shields with normal attacks, but a "Clicked" smash will break shields) --Shield>Counter Attack (You can use any attack out of your "shield exit" animation, meaning it is very effective for countering non multi-hit attacks) --Character Dependent Animation-Cancel (All characters will have 1 move that can be canceled by another move, for Sakuya her side-b will immediately end if you hit down-b, but it comes at the cost of a short period where you cannot use any specials) --Air Dodge (technical air-dodge from melee, though a brawl like air dodge can be done with a neutral stick, but it's not a dodge, it is an air-block) New Mechanics: --Perpetual Tilt (after doing one tilt or landing from an aerial, you will continue to automatically do tilts in whatever direction you have the stick or A button held until you let go) --Perpetual Smash (Similar to perpetual tilt but with the C-Stick) --Neutral Tilt (Similar to a Smash 4 jab finisher) --Aerial-double-jump-Cancel (If you land an air attack, you can cancel it with a jump) --Nair-Cancle: if you land a Nair, you can cancel it with any other aerial. --Pummel Block: time the L/R or A right when you are pummeled and you won't take damage --Skating (you move one direction while alternating the way you turn) --Slow Falling --Float (Almost all characters will have a float mechanic similar to that of Mewtwo in Project M. One can extend float time by connecting aerial moves) --Aerial Grabs --Wake Up Grabs (A grounded player can use a Wake up Grab by pressing the Grab button.) --Magic Throw (Each character will have a Throw with a specific property unique to said character. For example, Sakuya's Up Throw will stop time for the thrown opponent for a short time, and Reimu's down throw allows her to teleport within close vicinity of her opponent even when far away) --Character specific abilities (For example, Sakuya can bring her thrown projectiles back to her through reversing time for the projectiles, and Reimu can teleport out of her float into a down or up aerial.) --Struggles and Overpowers (Activated when two opponents press the grab each other at the same time. During a struggle, both players must precisely attack in rhythm of a visual timer. If one player fails to press on time, the other player can perform a devestating overpower attack. If both players fail to press on time, the struggle is canceled.) --Spell Cards (Activated through a fully charged smash attack) --Final Smash Spell Card (Activated by pressing Shield and B button at the same time, only one use per match). Mechanics From Smash that were cut: --Shield Shuffle (no orb) --Grab Escape (replaced with pummel block, trying to avoid mechanics that ask the player to button mash) --J-J-Jab (tapping the A button will not make you do your jab loop, you must hold it down) --Footstool Jumps (Replaced with Aerial Grabs)
Gameplay Videos: The playlist for the videos can found here. As for an example of stage design, this is what one of the WIP stages look like: Edit: There is an update to the Scarlet Devil Clocktower stage:
Ooh, I love this. Touhou characters, bullet hell projectiles, and all the competitive elements plus more. Is there a download anywhere? Also, does it have spikes/meteor smashes?

Also, spikes are one of the returning mechanics listed in the original post.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of hitstun or impact to most attacks, visually.

I'm pretty certain that the developers would touch up the details later in the game's development.

Any word on whether Cirno will be a fighter or not? I don't know a ton about Touhou, but I do know her.
This is how we'll settle the age old debate of best girl.
I don't really play fighter games that much and 14.5 is coming this year, but this looks very fun so I'll give it a try at least once! I've barely played Smash games before though, so it might be a bit difficult to adapt. Also you should check the Touhou Project thread, I've seen some people talk about spin-offs
Would it be alright for me to link my thread to your thread? I want to make sure to spread this fan project to as much Touhou fans as possible. After all, who doesn't want to see a 3d Smash Bros fangame with Touhou characters and even more mechanics? [editline]6th January 2015[/editline] Here's a new stage from the developers, the Hakurei Shrine! Things like Fountain of Dreams from Melee, Smashville from Brawl, or Yoshi's Island (also from Brawl)?
Is there any word on stages with moving platforms? Things like Fountain of Dreams from Melee, Smashville from Brawl, or Yoshi's Island (also from Brawl)?
No word from the developers about moving platforms yet, although I assume they would be easy to implement.
More ingame photos from the developers. This time, it's about testing the camera. FromSoySauce recently released an indiegogo campaign for Touhou Super Smash Battles: The indiegogo campaign can be found here.
To be honest, most of the moves seem copypasted from the Touhou fighting games, Hisoutensoku/SWR in particular, transferred into 3D with Smash mechanics. Doesn't look like a very good game.

Doesn't look like a very good game.
To be fair, the developers intended the fangame to be more of a marriage between Smash Brothers and UNL. Also, there's a lot more to be interested in this fangame other than it being a Touhou/Smash crossover. Such as the fact that it's virtually the first 3d Smash fangame (other Smash fangames, such as Super Smash Flash 2, Super Smash Bros Crusade, or Super Smash Land, were 2d games). Or the fact that it adds even more mechanics to the Smash formula.
I don't see why they couldn't just stick with 2d sprites Touhou just looks kinda weird and ugly on 3D
I don't see why they couldn't just stick with 2d sprites Touhou just looks kinda weird and ugly on 3D
I'm mostly interested in it for the mechanics over the characters. 2D sprites just don't look as nice for something like Smash, to be honest. The animations and everything are much better represented in 3D space. IMO, of course.
I don't see why they couldn't just stick with 2d sprites Touhou just looks kinda weird and ugly on 3D
even though this looks pretty ugly, touhou can look good in 3d when done properly:

In which one, the game or those videos? I really don't like the faces in the game.
In which one, the game or those videos? I really don't like the faces in the game.
Well both now that you mention it.
Translating 2d to 3d never goes well unless you do it like the new guilty gear, but those videos did an okay job at it imo.
Translating 2d to 3d never goes well unless you do it like the new guilty gear, but those videos did an okay job at it imo.
They look like Dragonball Z type faces in those videos.
FromSoySauce recently released an FAQ video about Touhou Super Smash Battles.

FromSoySauce released an animation exhibition for Sakuya in case anyone wants to make criticisms on the animations.
In related news, the IndieGoGo campaign for Touhou Super Smash Battles have reached its $10,000 base goal. Its next stretch goal is at $20,000, which includes 3 more characters, 5 more stages, and online multiplayer. Also, FromSoySauce released this video where they discuss Touhou Smash:
Japanese version of Indiegogo trailer has been released.
The way they talk in every video is so hammed up, it's ridiculous. I guess I can't complain too much, since they seem like competent developers.
Is it only gonna be based on one touhou game or are they gonna have characters from other games? Asking because Mamizou is best 2hu
Are you referring to the characters from specifically one game or the type of official fighting game. Because any character is possible for the roster (unless it's a nonhumanoid, generic, or not yet designed), although the fangame is a mix between Smash Bros. and UNL (yet characters can have moves not native to UNL, such as Reimu with her up aerial from HM). So basically Mamizou is possible, but we don't know if she is in the roster yet.
