• Tactical Shooters - A Lost Genre

Is it just me, or are there really no such thing as tactical shooters anymore? Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield and the expansions for that seem to have been the last shooters that were true to their tactical and strategic gameplay. Tom Clancy did a pretty good job. The Rainbow Six series was great. But you have to admit, ever since Lockdown came out they really started dumbing down the gameplay. Personally I wasn't a fan of Lockdown and the rest of what was to come - Vegas and whatnot. It's not tactical. At all. It doesn't give you that feeling of leading a professional counter terrorist team. It feels more like the COD type G.I. Joe. Ghost Recon was also another great series, and it started slowly changing just like Rainbow Six did. I think Ubisoft did an amazing job creating Rainbow Six specifically for close-quarters combat and Ghost Recon focused on larger operations and greater conflict. I think the ArmA series is pretty good, as well. Another game I really enjoyed was SWAT 3 and SWAT 4. The third SWAT more than the fourth. Why isn't the gaming industry interested in these type of videogames? Personally, I prefer a game to present a challenge. One way to do that is to put a drop of realism into the game. I know a lot of people are different (and I respect that), but I enjoy realism. I also enjoy thinking and using my mind. Realism makes you use your mind; you can't Rambo around sprinting and jumping just hoping you'll frag a badguy. Well, you could of course, but it wouldn't work out too well. You have to challenge yourself to think, "What's gonna get me killed, what's not. Then what do I do? Then what?" The gaming industry realized that twelve year olds want to play videogames, too. And astonishingly (/sarcasm), most twelve year olds can't play games that challenge their mind to the extent of some of these games that were mentioned. So what do they do? Dumb down gameplay so they can make money. That's my theory, at least. How do you guys feel about this? Do you miss the ol' tactical shooters? What were some of your favorite games and memories? Post pictures, talk, whatever... Please don't use this thread to ridicule other videogames simply for not being realistic/tactical. We all have our preferences and we're all different.
Rainbow Six was tough as balls IIRC. I could never get past that mission where you have to sneak into a skyscraper and do some electronic espionage without killing anyone or being detected.
I remember getting SWAT 4 with my Geforce 6600 GT, it was great because you actually had plan out what you were doing and you couldn't just rush in, you had choices like going through back entrances or through a roof or something else completely, really good set of games, i miss them.
I used to play lots of the first few Ghost Recon games (before it got into this GRAW shit). Because I must have been like nine at the time a lot of the operations were pretty much just me running at dudes and praying to God they were too busy laughing to shoot me. That is, when I wasn't just leaning left and right to dance.
They don't make as much money as shitty cod games and as such don't get made. An unfortunate truth.
SWAT 4 was the shit. The worst part about it is your teammates tazering you over and over lol.
SWAT 4 was the shit. The worst part about it is your teammates tazering you over and over lol.
My friends and I played a co-op game together and we couldn't stop pepper spraying each other
Another thing I loved about those games was the amount of teamwork involved. Hell, even if you were playing with AI's they felt like a real team to you. Teamwork <3
The way you say "a lost genre" makes it seem like we are unable to play older games like RS.
I liked how you could just plan the operations in Raven Shield, and then let NPCs play through them without having to do anything.

When I got to be like 15 or so I began to play those games again and loved them. I could actually win this time haha.
Operation Flashpoint was the first ever shooter game I ever played. Loved every minute of the demo.
a lost genre? trying playing ArmA2 then tell me that the tactical shooter is a lost genre.
I've been playing some Ghost Recon and SWAT 3 lately. I suck ass at them but they're still fun as hell.
a lost genre? trying playing ArmA2 then tell me that the tactical shooter is a lost genre.
Did you even read the thread? I mentioned ArmA 2, I love it. Name another modern tactical shooter that's as successful as ArmA. Exactly. What I'm saying is - tactical shooters aren't developed like they use to be, it's almost like they're not being developed at all. For the best of it you have to go back a few years.
Rainbow Six (up until Raven Shield) was the shit, I loved planning the missions and carefully choosing my teams' loadout and stuff. I hope R6: Patriots will go back to the old formula instead of following on the stupid Vegas cover shooter stuff. [sp]just kidding never gonna happen :([/sp]
I have good news for you, OP. There's two tactical-type games being made right now. Both are early in development. Intruder is a very cool looking game for the Unity engine made by (I believe) two people. I suggest you watch some of their videos they have so far showing off some of the things that are going to be in the game. They seem like nice guys, so feel to suggest things or ask them about the game. Project TAKEDOWN (formerly the Hardcore Crowdsourced Tactical Shooter) is made by a team of people from various developers who have a dream of making a tactical shooter that they want, as well as taking a lot of suggestions from people who will play the game (where the 'crowdsourced' comes from). It started as a Kickstarter project, and raised $220K to fund it from the $200K goal. One of the key points the developers want to get down is the idea of a non-linear situation; the map you're in may be small, but you have multiple entrances and tons of planning to do. You can also suggest things on the Serellan forum, or if you pledged money to the Kickstarter, gain access to the private developer forums. I believe at the moment they're sorting out an office and are going to pick out an engine soon.
The thing I loved about tactical shooters of days gone by is that you NEEDED a team. It wasn't something you could do without.
As someone who has never played a Tactical Shooter (With the exception of Republic Commando), what would be a good series or game to start with?
As someone who has never played a Tactical Shooter (With the exception of Republic Commando), what would be a good series or game to start with?
Swat 4
Superstepa is correct, Swat 4 would be a very good game to start out with. It's easy to learn, simple, but it still has a very realistic and tactical gameplay type. If you like that, you should try Swat 3. I'd say try the fourth one first because Swat 3 is a bit more complex and harder to learn. If you liked Swat 3, go Rainbow Six. A lot of people often get frustrated because they don't take the time to learn how to play these games. Just be patient and don't get mad. Once you learn, it's fun as hell. Thanks A big fat ass, I'll look into them. The second one seems pretty cool. If anyone keeps tactical shooters alive it'll be these third party groups.
I remember the good old days of Rainbow Six 3, equipping my team with MP5/10s because that's how they did it in the books. They always died like 2 minutes into the operations for some reason. SWAT 4 was also a bitch as well, I actually have it installed on my laptop. I'm still having trouble getting past A-Bomb. I'm trying everything I can too. But they always have to kill me or one of my teammates. Poor Reynolds :(

It's probably my favorite co-op game ever. [editline]10th April 2012[/editline]
I have good news for you, OP. Is it just me, or am I the only person who would pay $40 bucks for the old Rainbow Six game and all of its expansions if it were on Steam? Worth the money IMO.
I'd kill to have ghost recon on steam. It's only 9.99... though I feel if I bought it now a steam sale would happen this time tommorow and I'd be like "fuck I could have bought this for $2.78" Its [del]a great[/del] [del]an amazing[/del] the best coop game, if it goes on sale I'll probably buy a couple of them and gift them.

I think I spent like $11 bucks for them. I fuckin' love Steam. Also - there's some pretty neat mods out there for Ghost Recon. I remember I installed like two totally different campaigns with their own maps, AI, and objectives. With the old modding community you'll never get bored.

as sad as this topic is, I can't help but laugh at the irony of Zacht's avatar :v:
