• How to: Record 60 fps with fraps, constantly, highest settings.

Now, I know you've all dealt with the whole dealio: Some people just can't seem to use source recorder. It's an amazing prospect to think about, but some people really are incapable of doing it properly. So, I've taken the liberty to show you all how to record a video at 60 FPS in any source game, using fraps. I'm currently unable to add pretty pictures, but as soon as I can get back on my capable computer (about 40 minutes, maybe less), I'll be taking some and adding them to the OP REQUIREMENTS - Any game running on the source engine - A full copy of Fraps - Basic knowledge of how to use the console - At least 10 GB of harddrive space (the recorded videos are pretty large. you can compress these afterwards) WARNING BEFOREHAND Your audio and video will NOT be synced. You'll have to go the extra mile and record the proper audio afterwards, or just go with no audio at all. STEPS (with pretty pictures) 1. Start up fraps. 2. Start up your game of choice. 3. If you haven't recorded a demo, do so now. 4. Load this demo. 5. Pause the demo. (demo_pause?) 6. Type bench_start in console (this is 1/3 of the magic) 7. Type host_framerate 60 (substitute 60 for whatever framerate you want to record at) 8. In the movies tab of fraps, enable "Don't sync audio or video" 9. Set fraps to the framerate you chose 8. Ingame, resume the demo (demo_resume?) 9. Start recording. 10. When you're done, the finished video should be exactly the framerate you chose with host_framerate. You can now add the fixed audio/video together in virtualdub/aftereffects/premier/whateverthefuck if you recorded it. Enjoy!
A+ thread will read again.
Or just record demo, play demo, use "startmovie moviename avi", select codec, and repair with VLC.
I get good fps with FRAPS but the damn thing with this app is the size of the videos.
Fraps needs good harddrive space for saving all of your videos, unless you upload them online.
Or just record demo, play demo, use "startmovie moviename avi", select codec, and repair with VLC.
Way to read OP.
this still doesn't beat Source Recorder quality wise because Fraps compresses the chroma channel at unacceptable levels if you have to use large amounts of color correction still nice though last time I tried this method you didn't need bench_start though
Don't use demos to record Machinima, you're better off just filming it as it happens with fraps. A tip I read that make fraps perform a little better is to not get fraps to write to your hard drive that windows or the game is installed on, this can affect performance.
Unbelievably retarded tutorial. Just use the source recorder method and you'll get higher quality, if you're going to use this method.
I can record at 60fps without that at max. :smug: Bragging aside, a handy tutorial. I tried that myself a while back and it works like a charm.
I don't remember if Source Recorder can render just WAVs, but if it can, you can just launch a WAV render and do the other stuff as said on the tutorial, it should work fine
Startmovie name wav
yeah so you don't have to render everything twice, just run the wav render along with fraps asynchronously
Okay, please note that the only recent version this will work with is 3.0.1: changes introduced to the software with 3.1 and higher (with the Lock Framerate) option make this impossible apparently you don't need to even have sound recording on but I'm not sure i'm gonna write to the author of the software to ask him if it's possible to have a special recording mode that never creates dropped empty frames
Or you could just output the video data from fraps to a completely different hard drive than that of which the game is installed and ruining on and get a 1 fps performance hit.
I'd rather use TGAs. It's the same thing as OP's tutorial, except less VISIT FRAPS.COM and shitty low quality recording.
I have the new version and all I do is lock the frame rate and it goes smooth.
Thanks for the good/bad remarks. Luckily, there is a method of recording more than 30 seconds without some ugly fraps.com sign! However, if I were to share how, many powerful, scary men would come to bust down my door and break my legs. In regards to other matters, I understand that source recorder is completely possible for usage, but some people can just not figure it out. I had a friend who, no matter how many tutorials he read, videos he saw, or even when I explained it to him personally, did not get how to use source recorder. He's the main inspiration behind this thread, and I aimed to help those who couldn't figure it out. And again, thanks for the (kind of) constructive criticism!
I still hate how whenever I use the simple playmovie demoname avi, it'll make the avi fine, but the video will be flashy colours/distorted.
When I record with fraps at 30fps and host_framerate set to 60. It records in goes into slowmo. how do i make it play back in real time speed?
Whats the best method of compressing the videos?

That’s so discouraging, if Fraps cannot make video and audio in sync. And I think Fraps is a little expensive. Actually, some free recording programs are capable of recording sound and video in nice synchronization, such as Jing (https://www.techsmith.com/jing.html ) and Apowersoft Screen Recorder (http://www.apowersoft.com/free-online-screen-recorder). Absolutely, the recorded video with these tools are fine as well. (User was permabanned for this post ("spam" - postal))

Fraps more like craps I suggest everyone to use mirillis action
