Step inside your favorite game.
Oculus Rift is a new virtual reality (VR) headset designed specifically for video games that will change the way you think about gaming forever. With an incredibly wide field of view, high resolution display, and ultra-low latency head tracking, the Rift provides a truly immersive experience that allows you to step inside your favorite game and explore new worlds like never before.
We're here raising money on Kickstarter to build development kits of the Rift, so we can get them into the hands of developers faster. Kickstarter has proven to be an amazing platform for accelerating big and small ideas alike. We hope you share our excitement about virtual reality, the Rift, and the future of gaming.
Designed for gamers, by gamers.
The Rift takes 3D gaming to the next level. There are a number of VR headsets out there, but none that deliver a truly immersive gaming experience. Most products either lack the technical features required for believable immersion or sit at a very high price-point ($20,000+) reserved for the military or scientific community.
We set out to change all that with the Rift, which is designed to maximize immersion, comfort, and pure, uninhibited fun, at a price everyone can afford.
We’re working with the best teams in the industry.
"What I've got now, is, I honestly think the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen"
John Carmack, id Software
"Needless to say, I'm a believer... We're extremely excited here at Epic Games to get the Unreal Engine integrated with Oculus"
CliffyB, Design Director Epic Games
"I think this will be the coolest way to experience games in the future. Simply that... that big"
David Helgason, CEO Unity
"I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to program with it and see what we can do.”
Michael Abrash, Valve
"It looks incredibly exciting, if anybody’s going to tackle this set of hard problems, we think that Palmer’s going to do it. So we’d strongly encourage you to support this Kickstarter.”
Gabe Newell, President and Owner Valve
Also I've secured funding for my own devkit. Should be coming in May. Gonna have so much fun with it over the summer.
Timeskip to the time devkits start coming out and we'll get news about things we didn't know already, not to mention actual things.

When did you order, and did they give you a better estimate than just 'may'? early/mid/late, etc
I'm sure a lot of people may want to know how long they'll have to wait if they're putting in an order soon
I ordered before CES, which is like getting to the dock and off my boat before a massive Tsunami hits. Preorders for Dev Kits skyrocketed after CES.

I haven't ordered it yet... exactly. I've just secured the funding :v:
I'd expect June or late May at that point.
New Galaxy S4 has a 1080p 5 inch screen. Something like that will probably be in the Rift consumer version, now that they're finally coming to the market.
I'm really hyped. We ain't seen nothing yet. The fun will begin when the devkits are fully rolled out. The next 6 or so months will either make or break the Rift and possibly the consumer VR industry as a whole.
My biggest concern is what would happen if I drop my controller.
you slip the rift up a little, reach down and wipe off all the oil, butter, sweat and/or spaghetti which caused you to drop a controller while playing and then you... pick it up?
Has there been any screenshots showing how potentially blurry the rift is? Considering the resolution of the display, I don't imagine you're going to be doing any precision sniping at long ranges with the thing anytime soon.
I really want to use with a WiiMote+Nunchuck in a Wii Zapper with the Half-Life 2 VR Mod

Between 12:00-28:00 they talk about the Rift experience, some good quotes and impressions.
What they're getting at, is that even though the resolution of the dev kit is low, the overall immersion is so high that it just doesn't matter very much. And it'll only get better with the consumer rift.
I can't wait 'til someone makes Amnesia work with them and I can shit myself all over again
I can't wait 'til someone makes Amnesia work with them and I can shit myself all over again
I think shitting won't be enough with Rift.
I think shitting won't be enough with Rift.
to be honest it'll be a surreal nightmarish dream feeling
like
you've all had those dreams where there's no physical connection to anything but emotion
being chased by something, falling, throwing a punch at someone only for it to decelerate and brush against them, you can't physically react to things how you want to and it can make you feel sheer hopelessness and dread in some situations. Even those short fall things where you wake up and feel like you fell into your bed can be freaky, I'm going to bet this will give games a SERIOUS sense of vertigo
...mirror's edge will be AMAZING
My biggest concern is what would happen if I drop my controller.
If you land on your joystick you're probably going to start turning uncontrollably and get dizzy. Wrist straps like the Wii would be funny, but possibly worth looking into.
Or just sit down and don't stand up.

Something related to Rift and Bioshock Infinite coming on March 26th? Which also happens to be the release date - so maybe day 1 support for the Rift?
First game I'm gonna play when I get this is either gonna be Amnesia or Mirror's Edge.

I highly doubt it, but support down the line might be a thing.
If infinite ever gets Rift support I can die a happy man.

Radio interview with Luckey.
GDC is gonna blow people away
They're saving something for GDC. Maybe announcements on upcoming big title games having Rift support, or something related to the consumer version? We'll see.
I'm really tempted to invest in this idea and nab a devkit, but I'm not a dev for anything and don't plan to, yet this kind of this is too good not to donate towards. I'm conflicted :c
[sub] Though I'd love to play Mirror's Edge with one[/sub]

The purpose of the Kickstarter wasn't to receive donations as much as it was about wanting people to have access to the devkit.

Rather, giving developers access to the devkit :v:
When we launched the Kickstarter campaign, we said we’d bundle a copy of DOOM 3 BFG Edition with each development kit as an extra “Thank you.” Unfortunately, we’ve been informed that DOOM 3 BFG Edition will not support the Rift development kit by the time we begin shipping.
Since DOOM 3 won’t be available, we’d like to try and make it up to you.
Replacement Rewards
If you were supposed to receive a DOOM 3 BFG Edition, we’ll replace it with one of the following rewards:
- $20 Steam Wallet credit, perfect for buying your next game on Steam (including DOOM 3 BFG Edition without Rift developer kit support if you still want it).
- $25 Oculus Store credit, which can be applied to future purchases at the Oculus Store including Oculus Latency Testers, new Oculus t-shirts, and more Rift development kits.
- A full refund for your pledge. If you’re unhappy with the options above, we completely understand. Email us at support@oculusvr.com, and we’ll be happy to discuss your specific order or refund your pledge in full.
that's a setback, doom and john carmack were the posterchild of the rift at the start...
Wow, that's very generous of them. They didn't fuck up anything and yet they offer you plenty of options for you to choose and even offering refund.
I paid $300+ explicitly to play doom and do nothing else with it ever I demand a full refund and an apology >:(
also I'm getting antsy for this thing to get on my face
