Thanks Pilotguy97 for the new banners Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress or, as everyone ever likes to call it, Dwarf Fortress is a roguelike, city management, God game that revolves around the idea of establishing and maintaining a dwarven settlement. Dwarf Fortress is an extremly simulated game, randomly generating everything from the world you play in and the names of everyone and everything you'll encounter to simulating the individual fingers and arteries of the dwarves you're resposible for. The entire game is rendered in ASCII which leaves much of the games imagery to the imagination. Dwarf Fortress started development in 2002, and no public release was made until 2006. The game is programmed solely by Tarn Adams, known as Toady on the Dwarf Fortress forums, with input from his brother Zach Adams. Tarn Adams has declared this game his life's work, expecting 20 years before it is complete; development is supported solely through donations, and contributors receive either short stories or crayon drawings as thank yous from the developers. Originally the game had little to no variation. There was one map that was strictly layed out, no Z levels (you only played on one plane), and many of the system the game has now were far more primitive. Over time, random generation was Z levels were added, but one of the largest updates to the game was on April Fool's Day in 2010. The 2010 brought a whole mess of changings regarding nearly everything about the game. Weapons and armor now used real world attributes, you could construct arenas to fight monsters, miliraty was completly overhauled, combat was changed, creatures now had more statistical attributes and unique appearances, characters bodies were meticulously tracked, everything from hair to internal guts were now tracked, characters have thoughts you can read, fortress healthcare was introduced, underground generation was overhauled and a million more things I can't even begin to list. Dwarf Fortress' next major update would come in February of 2012. Vampires and werewolves would be added and they could raid your fortress, necromancer armies were now a threat, Adventure Mode experienced a lot of change for the better, and much more. The game recived a major update in July Fortress Mode Adventurer Mode Dwarf Fortress has three major game modes, a fourth non-game mode, and a sandbox arena mode. Fortress: In this mode you manage a number of dwarves whose task is to create a fortress. This is the "standard" mode of the game and generally what you'll hear everyone talk about. Reclaim Fortress: Once you have created and abandoned/lost a fortress, you can take a band of military dwarves to fight the monsters that now inhabit it. If you succeed, the fortress is yours to play in once more, just like the standard dwarf fortress mode. Adventure: In this mode you explore the world in a fashion similar to Rogue, Nethack, or Angband. You'll create a character (not just a dwarf!) and explore the world you've generated, taking quests, uncovering legends and killing monsters. Legends: In the fourth mode you can read more about the legends of your world, provided you've discovered them through adventuring. It also holds a vast amount of information about cities, creatures and people throughout your world. Arena Mode: This mode was released with the latest large-release of the game, and allows you to spawn any creatures you want in an enclosed arena, assign them teams and armour/weaponry, and fight them to the death! This mode is perfect for testing out modded creatures, as well as simply having some sandbox fun! * The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning from as little as five years to over 1000 years of history, dozens of towns, hundreds of caves and regions with various wildlife. * The world persists as long as you like, over many games, recording historical events and tracking changes. * The combat model uses skills, body parts, wrestling, charging and dodging between squares, bleeding, pain, nausea, and much more. * A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity and air masses to create fronts, clouds, rain storms and blizzards. * Over two hundred rock and mineral types are incorporated into the world, placed in their proper geological environments. * Add new creatures, weapons, plants, metals and other objects via modifiable text files. * Extended ASCII character set rendered in 16 colors (including black) as well as 8 background colors (including black). Soon to be shot in Technicolor™! Fortress * Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in the mountain. * Craft treasures and furniture from many materials and improve these objects with precious metals, jewels and more. * Defend yourself against attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness and the depths. * Support the nobility as they make demands of your populace. * Keep your dwarves happy and read their thoughts as they work and relax. * Z coordinate allows you to dig out fortresses with multiple levels. Build towers or conquer the depths. * Build floodgates to divert water for farming or to drown your adversaries. * Much, much, much, way too much more... Adventure * Play an adventurer and explore, quest for glory or seek vengeance. * Meet adversaries from previous games. * Recruit people in towns to come with you on your journey. * Explore without cumbersome plot restrictions. * Seamlessly wander the world -- 197376 x 197376 squares total -- or travel more rapidly on the region map. * Accept quests from the town and civilization leaders. * Retire and meet your old characters. Bring them along on an adventure with a new character or reactivate them and play directly. * Z coordinate allows you to move seamlessly between dungeon levels and scale structures fighting adversaries above and below. Due the the very easy editing of the raws, (simple text files that make up a lot of the game) many mods have been created that can range from full conversions of races, creatures and items to a simple additional stone type. Note, Orkels mod may cause problems with newest version of DF If you think a specific mod should be in this section, tell me! Lazy Newb Pack (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0) An exceptional compilation of tools and tilesets, and the game itself, all rolled into one fairly easy to use interface to get new people playing. Dwarf Therapist (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=66525.0) Some people consider this tool essential. Dwarf Therapist gives you a graphical interface for managing the labor of your dwarves. Amazingly helpful once your fortress starts getting crowded. Stonesense (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=106497.0) A great tool that puts your fortress in an isometric display with pixel art so you can see everything that happens just a little better. While you can't interact with Dwarf Fortress through Stonesense, it gives you an alternative way to view your fortress. If you think a specific utility should be in this section, tell me! It makes use of modified tilesets, graphics sets and edited raws to take full advantage of what little GUI the game allows us to create." I should play this more, I remember one time in adventurer mode I gathered an army of 40 peasants after becoming a hero and assaulted a dragon's lair. I died in a few turns but I continued down the road and one of the peasants cut off the dragon's head with a knife then died to blood loss. Oh, and new thread smell and whatnot.
Some of the links in the OP are dead.
Some of the links in the OP are dead.
I just grabbed them from the old OP. Gimme a sec. I'll take out the dead ones

And the thread is up Stay tuned for first update http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1250691&p=39753955#post39753955
I woke up during the middle of the night on a beach in adventure mode, there was a shark a few tiles from me. It nearly closed the distance to me while i was stunned before it air-drowned. Good times.
is it just me or is it almost impossible to get sheer cliffs now? I've got a custom map with elevation meshes set to only give me min/max plateaus, no erosion cycles to speak of, cliff erosion turned off, and hundreds of rivers for canyons, but I still have to search for ten minutes to find a decent cliff and even then it's stuck in a remote corner somewhere in a crappy site.
yeah I was playing one of my fortresses last night and saw something unusual but was too tired to realize until this morning when I started playing again... What the hell was this doing in my fortress just randomly sitting in the entrance? This fortress was attacked by a necromancer about a year ago and now I have this awesome book.

But the chances of it being one of the books [sp]with the secrets of life and death in it[/sp] are really low.

Listen. It might be hard to understand how cool this next release is going to be, but let me help you: Not satisfied with just adventure mode stuff? You can retire your forts now and return to them later. So what’s up? Congratulations to the generous! Toady: Yeah, I think I'll be balanced between handling insurrection and combat tweaks this time around, since the incompleteness of the new combat stuff has been stopping my insurrections from going through smoothly. It'd be good to start closing some chapters off for this release, although that doesn't seem to have happened yet. In any case, simultaneous actions, reaction moments and nonlethal combat are all back under scrutiny, and hopefully I'll finally have a happy and daring tale of a town delivered from goblin rule sometime this month.
losing is the game start a new fort, learn from your mistakes every fort is a learning experience, there will never be a successful fort
This is so true. If your fort doesn't fall due to goblins or tantrum spirals, low framerate will be the death of you.
This is so true. If your fort doesn't fall due to goblins or tantrum spirals, low framerate will be the death of you.
I used to play this game on such outdated computers that my current 200 population 1fps isn't even noticeable to me. I start a new game on my friends computer and am like HOLY WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPEN- THEY RUNNING SO FAST AHH. When I first watched youtube videos of people playing this game at high fps was mind boggling. Things are actually getting pretty bad for me right now, this fps can't really get much slower. Pop ~200 (forgot to cap it) and I'm being beseiged by necromancers every few years. The amount of pathfinding going on with the hundreds of body parts crawling around plus the massive pen of animals that are constantly running away PLUS the dwarves who are constantly bottlenecking the hallways going to pen/pasture large animals is really taking its toll.
Use cages for animals, or at least put chains on them. Keeps them from wandering all over the damn place.
so im starting df up again for the first time in months, and everyone seems to be giving birth about 2 years in i have 17 dwarven babies, do dwarves fuck like rabbits now?
Use cages for animals, or at least put chains on them. Keeps them from wandering all over the damn place.
Hmm. Do grazing animals not eat when in cages?
Grazing animals thrive best when given open prairies with water and grass I've observed. Walling in a small section of above-ground grassland for farming and horticulture is a prudent investment for any fortress, especially if accessible only from below ground and serving double use as a surface-adaptation park.
Make sure it's a decent size pen though as they will actually eat the grass and can run out of food.
Make sure it's a decent size pen though as they will actually eat the grass and can run out of food.
I like to pen all my animals together in one small pen until they go nuts and start eating each other. This way, the weak become food for the strong, thus meaning my dorfs only eat the strongest meat available. One time there was a goblin siege and I didn't get my livestock inside in time. One alpaca killed three goblins before they managed to take it down.
Trained war alpacas, doubling for wool and protection. Make it so.
