So tonight, i was looking at a game and its called "Pony Island", I'm deciding on buying this game and iv noticed that it plays a trick on steam by changing your name and have a friend messaging you out of complete random. Any help on this weird steam thing?
The Steam messaging stuff is [sp]all simulated within the game; it happens even if you are signed out of Steam friends and playing offline.[/sp] I don't think it does, but if it changes your actual Steam display name, easy enough to change it back and I can't imagine the game dev getting away with changing your name to something offensive, so it'd hardly cause problems. The above spoiler tag is very minor but answering your question is a spoiler to anyone who hasn't played and wants to stay blind going in; the below tags are all significantly more spoilerish and specific.
I would recommend getting the game if you like games that challenge your expectations. One section of the game tests your personal ability to [sp]follow instructions and not be distracted[/sp] in unconventional and unexpected ways. A spoilery example is [sp]small text suddenly changing to[/sp](puzzle solution ->)[sp]"remember this"[/sp][sp]for half a second when you've been ordered not to look away and there is a colourful distraction happening[/sp], to give you an idea. The Steam messaging is in fact [sp]part of the same encounter that orders you not to look away - the messages are another distraction while a subtle message briefly appears[/sp].
Wow. Thank you so much for answering my question. It makes sense now that you explained it, thanks alot :D
Hey, you're welcome. Also, the final stage is insanely epic. I won't even attempt to explain it, because describing it out of context makes it seem lame and retarded, but in context it is fucking awesome and words cannot do it justice. Also, teeny spoiler, be prepared to get hit with a truck full of feels out of nowhere. The game is going to give you an incredibly unconventional instruction [sp]after the credits[/sp].
Don't click this spoiler if you don't want to be spoiled about why the Steam messaging thing happens: [sp]you're ordered by the opponent to type something vile and offensive; shortly after you do, the character starts talking again, and during that conversation the character tells you to remember a word. Before the character gets around to the word you need to remember, your "friend" starts spamming you with faked Steam message notifications going like OMG (new message) WHAT (new message) YOU SAID <thing you typed>?? (new message) DUDE (new message) WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?? and so on. Once again, this is a distraction and you've been ordered not to look away from the character portrait and dialogue text at the center of the screen.[/sp]
You should know that there are numerous secrets and easter eggs, and sometimes major backtracking will unlock things you wouldn't ordinarily see. The game'll try and make you think there's only a linear path in places while leaving subtle callouts that show that the path can be deviated from. That sounds really vague and it is on purpose so I'm not spoiling.
Finally, the last thing I'll say to you going in: Trust [sp]the hopeless soul[/sp]. They're your only friend.
Alright thanks!
