Toejam and Earl is finally back! We're goin' indie, and old skool like GAME ONE, with a fun retro-comics style, and plenty of funk!
The Story:
Toejam and his homeboy Big Earl go out for another joyride in their RapMaster Rocketship, and this time Peabo and Lewanda and a few other friends come along. Of course, TJ and Big E. have to take their friends to see Earth, where all the craziness started. While in orbit around Earth, TJ can't resist showing off and pressing a mysterious new button on their ship called "Black Hole - DO NOT PRESS!"
The Earth now breaks apart in one of those Time-Warp-Black-Hole-Displacement thingies. Who could have guessed, right? Well, TJ, Big Earl, and their playable-character-friends must once again put that darned ship back together. The good news is that this time, when you find the ship pieces, much cooler stuff happens, AND once it's all put together you get to fly the ship around. Neat, huh?
Greg Johnson, is one of the two original creators of this series, he is also the owner. Sega does not own the Toejam and Earl series.
Will it be like game one or game two, you ask? Well... (holding breath)... mainly like game one. We plan to go old school with this one. Fixed isometric camera (think "Don't Starve"), 2D sprites, simple controls, and an emphasis on coop play. It will also pull in some of the more beloved elements from game two, AND we have a list of exciting new gameplay elements planned as well.
Worried about it being like that third toejam and earl game that was on xbox? Worry not!
Don't worry we won't make you sick and confused with an over-the-shoulder POV camera like we had in game 3. Nevertheless, 3D terrain will let us do some really FUN stuff. We can zoom in to see characters better, or zoom way out to see the stacked levels. You can now see the levels way below you, and when you fall, where you land on the level below makes sense. Also, we'll have hills! So what? I can answer that with 2 words... ROOOCKET SKAAAAATES!!.
Features:
4 player co-op + Online capability:
Toejam and Earl is a multi-player game at it's heart. We're going to allow for 4 coop-players, and online play. We will have split screen.
All efforts focused on a PC title:
Initially we are focusing all of our efforts on the PC (Windows, Mac, and Linux). We hope to eventually put this onto all platforms but this will, of course, depend on funding and on getting arrangements set up with the platform vendors.
Features from all games are back:
Things like the Jam Out, hidden presents, and buttons and coin meters. Maybe we'll even be able to bring back the Hyperfunk Zone!
Meta-play:
Unlike the original TJ&E game, we now have elements that carry over from game to game, and players can gradually build up as they play repeatedly. We'll be introducing the idea of secret winged presents. Find and catch these to introduce new presents into the game. Collect hats that you keep from game to game, that boost your stats or give you abilities.
Growing comic book
and more!
They have a kickstarter currently set up: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1578116861/toejam-and-earl-back-in-the-groove with many different choices to pick. (Personally I'm thinking about the $60 dollar option, the mug and posters look great)
I'm glad they're going back to the old style of games, and it's awesome that the music is still as funky as ever! Seems like we're getting the old earthlings and even some new ones! One of the highlights to me is that they're focusing on a PC release so I wouldn't have to get/have a new console just for this game.
For nostalgic purposes here's some music from the original game:

toe jam and earl was basically my childhood
i didnt get very far but i never got bored of it, one of the best soundtracks to a game too imo
im super excited for this
They came out with a new video explaining how they've always wanted to make a direct sequel to the original game, but Sega asked them to make changes to both part 2 and 3.

They also seem to be really interested in listening to the community, send them your ideas!
I backed this as soon as I saw it.
TJ&E is a franchise I started my gaming life with and I've wanted to see it return for years now.
Loved it as a kid still do. I look forward to seeing this.
So they got their goal and after they hit 395k it went up like 20k in a really short amount of time!
I bought the peanut edition, can't wait for the posters + mug!
So a quick update, if you backed the game and haven't seen an update, they have an exclusive backers website:
http://www.hyperfunk.club/
If you missed the backing, you can still buy in here http://tjebackinthegroove.com/
I logged into my kickstarter and completely forgot about this game, it was a nice little surprise to see it moving along. With the extra backers after kickstarter finished they were able to get to their next stretch goal, allowing more composers to come in on the soundtrack.
On the development side:
On the game front, Jeff has gotten a good start on building the random terrain generator, and we are still spec-ing out all the game features and trying to plan a schedule that is both aggressive but achievable. We're also getting up to speed on the very cool animation tool called Spine, and starting to build the pieces needed to animate characters the right way (as opposed to what we threw together for the prototype). We have some fun things cooking, which we'll hopefully be announcing very soon!
