Planetary Annihilation is an upcoming real-time strategy computer game in development by Uber Entertainment. It is being developed by much of the team responsible for Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander. New blog post, they've started to design all of the units now.
Our next major milestone internally is first playable, where all our systems are fully integrated, and a match can be played, with a functional UI, client-server architecture up and running, and all other features that are ready for integration. We already have “playable” builds of the game, but our definition is rather loose. To get it to a point where anyone on the team, not just engineers, can easily login, start a match and play, is the major step needed to move us toward alpha. Fortunately all this can happen while lots of other work goes on. AI and unit development, art pipelines, virtual texturing and shadow systems to make the planets look amazing, music and sound composition, planet biome concepting and creation – as you’ve seen, commander creation, as you’ve also seen, etc. One of those et cetera items is unit concept and creation from the art team. We just did our first pass of grey boxing every unit in the game, which you can see here
http://www.uberent.com/pa/2013/03/06/planetary-annihilation-blog-edition/
Loving the look of those planes and ships. I'm hoping transports have actual storage areas visible for mechs and vehicles and really nice unloading animations.

Supreme commander should be in that picture.
Dat unit cannon.
Cortex Command should be in there. Drop pod of crabs. The doomsday weapon.
SupCom's should be a spam of sbombers or gunships. [editline]7th March 2013[/editline] And ohmygod we're getting close to Alpha I can't WAIT.
Dammit I wanted to create the new OP :v: Put up the new images from the newest blog posts please.
SupCom's should be a spam of sbombers or gunships.
naw i think an experimental would represent the game better
Havent been keeping up. But what end goals(stretch?) did PA end up getting in the kickstarter? Did that metal planet thingy get in?
Havent been keeping up. But what end goals(stretch?) did PA end up getting in the kickstarter? Did that metal planet thingy get in?
They got all of them. Metal planets, water planets, gas planets, full orchestral soundtrack etc
Can't fucking wait for this. I've always loved TA's style of gameplay over most RTS games.
Is it wrong that I'm still mad at Uber for their handling of SMNC?
I just love how small some ships are in comparison to the bigger ones. Really nice.

I loved naval warfare from TA, hopefully they'll eventually come close to the amount of different ships they had back then in addition to a mix of SupCom/SupCom2 ships.

8th March Stream. PA starts at 54:20.
Very interesting stream about the tech behind the planets and the pathfinding.
Are there any dates on alpha start etc?

I'll repeat, sharp edges. Anyone who has been following RTSs for a long time and especially how they handled terrain deformation will know how fucking amazing it is that they have sharp edges.

Still got my original TA disks on the shelf, with the game running at 1080p. Wish I had known about this game during its Kickstarter, I would've had no second thoughts about funding a TA sequel. It's awesome that those early unit/building renders give me such TA vibes.
What makes sharp edges better exactly?
Proper craters for the most part. Usually in RTS games you get a very boring terrain depressions, which don't really look like craters at all and are pretty much made to be just a small bump for units (most games shy away from anything going near vertical sloping for heightmap and general engine limitations). With sharp edges we have proper craters that can actually obstruct passage (or have units fall over the edge), but most of all they actually look like craters caused by an explosive weapon now. Also seems we're getting properly deep craters, which is even better (which again usually doesn't happen).
That pathfinding looks fucking great. This game looks like a natural evolution of TA's gameplay, and I can't wait. This is one of the few new RTS games I am actually interested in.

They kept reiterating that this was all just dev stuff, did people actually think that that stuff was representative of the final game or something?
Was there a chat going on during the stream? They kept reiterating that this was all just dev stuff, did people actually think that that stuff was representative of the final game or something?
Apparently almost no-one understood the vector field for the pathfinding and misinterpreted it in all possible ways.
Was there a chat going on during the stream? They kept reiterating that this was all just dev stuff, did people actually think that that stuff was representative of the final game or something?
Yes, that's why they said they wouldn't do more technical talks on their livestream at the end, but then practically every comment on the video, their Kickstarter, their forums and their blogs was how awesome it is that they are showing all the technical details and they decided to keep doing it after all. [editline]31st March 2013[/editline]

Added Supreme Commander (please excuse my terrible, terrible drawing skills. That's supposed to be the leg of a huge experimental):
