• Terrible fear of water in videogames

Ever since I first played Half Life 2 as a kid, I've been terrified of water in video games. When your teleporter fucks up and drops you into the lake.. This motherfucker is everywhere. I can't even go into the water in build/roleplay maps anymore because I'm afraid it's in there or something else is.. It really doesn't even matter what game I'm playing, I stand at the water's edge and hesitate before going in, 9 times out of 10. The one time is if the water is crystal clear, which honestly, almost never happens in videogames. Just the feeling that there could be something in there that will pop up from under me and devour me, it scares the shit out of me. Hell, I'm slowly getting over the fear thanks to Far Cry 3, by swimming super fucking fast through semi-clear water, but even then I'm scanning around for sharks the entire time.. yet, one always gets me after a looong period of safe swimming. 20 feet from shore, and my character spins around to show me that a fucking shark has chomped my arm. Que the mini-heartattack, and I swim for shore. Fucking, Ratchet and Clank scares me because of what may be lurking beneath the water's surface. Anybody else have a strange fear of videogame water? I can jump in a lake or the ocean just fine in real life, because well, I know the general wildlife of my area and there aren't really any predators lurking at the top 5 feet of the water.. but still! What the fuck. Videogame water. Input? Have any other silly videogame happenings instilled even sillier fears in you that span across all titles? (say, opening lockers/closets because of those cheap-scares?)
Not really that strange, video games allow anything to happen, water is deep, expansive, unknown and you can't see very far while in it. Put them both together, and the mind starts making scary shit up. The water in Dark souls scared the shit out of me, because of this cunt. I don't think there really is a reason to be scared, because most games water is either safe or used as a sign of death( jumping in will kill you) or boundary (going to far will either give you an invisible wall or, once again, kill you). The only time you really have a reason to be afraid is inside a horror game, because water is probably implemented in the first place to trick you into thinking there is nothing there.
My sister kind of had a similar fear with water in games, except the problem was she hated how slow you move in water, plus the constant danger of losing air over time. Mostly in Zelda and Mario. On a personal note, I fucking hate it when videogame characters can survive falling 100 feet and take 100 bullet wounds to the head, but INSTANTLY DROWNS IN WATER. I know it's supposed to be about creating boundaries for the player but for crap's sake, can't they think of something better then water you instantly drown in? Like with HL2, you had at the very least leeches in the water that would bite you until you got out.

They're pretty fast, enough for them to easily gain on you in the water, all but your weakest gun, your melee and the crossbow, the most useful of the three work underwater, they're easily pissed off with sharp teeth and they make a worrying noise when you piss them off. The fact that the only locations you meet them in have murky water that you can't see into to shoot the bastards easily from above water doesn't help.

Water's one of the scariest hazards in videogames for the same reasons it's one of the scariest hazards in real life. It's a completely different environment that humans are not adapted for in any way, nor are they the dominant species in water. Because of this being in water triggers a primal reaction that we're not where we're supposed to be which causes fear and panic. You know who else was afraid of water in a videogame?
Did OP get this achievement? ;) http://n4g.com/news/1136130/far-cry-3-fearless-or-stupid-achievement-ftg-gameguide
this isnt a debate what is this doing here
Since I encountered this enemy in the sewer level of Dark Forces I have a fear of water in most games, it makes me feel uncomfortable.

I had a fear of oceans in real life and got over it with video games.

A few years ago me and a friend or two would play Sven Co-op on the level with the U shaped walkway. We'd take turns going down the ladder into the water and acting as bait to bring them to the surface, it was terrifying and hilarious.
Man, I have the SAME EXACT THING. I know your pain :(

But imagine a 10-something year old having never played any Half Life games before, all excited to play, then ooh man I'm in the water, WHAT THE FUCK GAHHHHHHH SAVE ME I nearly wet myself. Hell, I might have, it was a long time ago
do not play far cry 3
Oh, hey guys.
This entire level was just so bad to play through when I was younger.
That goddamn Lurker fish from Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. It'd be fine if it weren't for the fact that to get one of the power cells on Sentinel Beach, you had to go to the tower out in the water, and if you fell in you were so far out that the shark would spawn. However, in the very same game you had quite scenic locations with lakes and rivers and things that didn't hold all manner of evil, and I loved those.
oh hi
This is a pretty good reason why, the unknown lurking in shadow and being mysterious will always creep the fuck out of anyone
I wasn't scared of water in general But in a PS2 Indiana Jones game, I absolutely hated this one water level where there was a giant motherfucking crocodile that could not die. [editline]10th December 2012[/editline] I was like 8 or 9 at the time [editline]39[/editline] oh what the fuck after watching this I feel stupid I didn't know you could go around it that way
Deep, arctic water. I don't know what it is about arctic water.. But when it's deep. I hate being in it.
I have a fear of deep water in real life, which kinda goes over to video games, like off the top of my head, if anyone remembers that thing that pulls you under as a sort of level barrier in Jak and Daxter [editline]3[/editline]
That goddamn Lurker fish from Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. For a while as a kid I had a fear of going into pools after nearly drowning one time, but it never affected me when I played video games with water levels.
NOPE EEL.jpg oh hi
NOPE
I have the same problem. There's a mod for Oblivion called Castle Seaview. One of the quests it adds requires you to search for a crashed Dwemer Submarine in a partially submerged cave. At one part, there's a huge pit that technically doesn't have a bottom. It looks like it has a bottom, but there's an invisible wall blocking access to the rest of the area. The entire time I was searching the area, my heart was racing, and I started to sweat.
