What's Vagante? Vagante's a 2D randomly generated dungeon crawler/platformer action-RPG thing with an emphasis on difficulty and perma-death. Wait no before you start groaning, just take a look at the trailer Story shamelessly copypasta'd from the Vagante Wiki:
A recent rumor has it that a certain cave at the edge of the woods guards an unfathomable treasure. While a handful of intrepid adventurers have ventured into the cave already, none have returned. You on the other hand, know you’re different, and something draws you to these caverns. Undeterred by the potential danger, you set out by caravan to investigate...
Core features Gameplay revolves going down into randomly generated caves and dungeons, controlling one of three (four, once you unlock them) main heroes, all of them being stereotpical fantasy guys: The Knight (Good with swords and can be spec'd to be neigh invulnerable), the Rogue (Excellent with a bow and daggers), and the Mage (Can blast fire and lighting out of nearly orifice), there's also the Wildling, a fist fighter that starts each adventure totally unequipped. A lot of this is all stuff we've seen before but the presentation feels top notch and the music is wonderful. Combat feels a little more deliberate than most other games of this genre as melee weapons are inherently a little slow, requiring timing and a commitment to your attacks. Same thing with spell casting. There's EXP awarded for every slain monster and your characters level up, stat points can be assigned to unique abilities (Regenerating shield for the fighter, boomerang daggers for the rogue, etc) or to core stats (Strength, defense, etc) Gear is also a big deal in Vagante, for example there are boots that allow you to crouch and phase through any floor, you can even phase through the bottom of the stage and kill yourself, there are gloves that allow for wall sliding, phasing through walls, chestplates that grant infinite jumps, etc Another neat addition they added to the more recent versions of the game is different traits you can assign to characters for extra challenge or gameplay modifiers, such as depraved, which starts you no equipment, snake eater which heals you when poisoned, etc. As of right now the game's in early access on Steam, with more stuff being added, also worth noting is online play is coming sometime in the future you can play the old alpha for free right here, though it's really outdated compared to the current version. Also be wary that there are spikes in this game and they are total bullshit. They will end both good runs and prematurely end fresh runs.
Ice block was such a bullshit spell. Freeze bosses and just use it again when they break out to stun lock.
also I really enjoy this game but I'm having a hard time playing as the mage, he's so dependent on magic and it just doesn't regen fast enough on its own, but at least he's better now than what he was like a few versions ago when he started with the lightning spell that could backfire on his robed ass.
Reviving this old thread, there's been a lot of improvements to this game and I feel like it doesn't get much exposure.
It doesn't get any exposure at all. Found this game about 3 months ago and it is amazing. It gets updated constantly unlike other Early Access games and have big hopes for it.
The recent change from mana to charges made me hesitant at first, but after playing mage for a bit, I decided it was a good alternative. I've got so much time clocked on this game, even more than steam says since I play offline at times. Online multiplayer when?
Seriously. Would love to start up some games whenever multiplayer comes around. Hopefully within the next year.
I propose a new thread title: Vagante: Not Pronounced with a Soft 'G'
Updating this but there's online co-op now, it's unstable and not 100% there but it works, and it's a lot of fun playing with friends.
