What are Amiibo's exactly?
Amiibo's are small plastic figurines based on popular Nintendo characters. Currently we're running through the "Smash Bros Collection" (and soon to be the Super Mario collection) with three waves out and a fourth coming soon. The quality of them vary from "Hey that looks great!" to "Marth". Inside the base of each Amiibo is a NFC chip that unlocks certain things in certain games, or in Smash Brothers case it gives you a AI buddy to train.
Amiibo's work both on the Wii-U and 3DS, the Wii-U Gamepad has a scanner built into it and the New 3DS's bottom screen will scan amiibo's as well. If you don't have a New 3DS and wish to use it Nintendo has announced they're working on a add-on you can buy at a later date that will scan on normal 3DS's.
I heard some of these are rare. What's the deal?
Somewhat true. During the first almost year of these things being out scalping was openly rampant and unstoppable in regards to Amiibos- thanks to numerous restocks though the problems been slowly declining. The only ones you're going to have to really really work for these days are the Fire Emblem crew but with a little bit of importing or asking around you can probably find what you want at a far more reasonable price. Just don't panic if you miss out and don't get something day 1. This doesn't mean you should sleep on pre-orders because hey you never know, but the problem IS getting better.
Well that out of the way what games support Amiibos other then Smash?
Glad you asked! (You didn't ask)

Pay attention for pre-orders and get em when you see them.
As a note: If you don't get Amiibos or think they're dumb go ahead and think that, but try not to rile everyone up because you dislike them. Some people want to collect them because they're fans of nintendo's characters, some want merch of characters who won't likely get anything else in the future (Hello, Ness). There really isn't anything wrong with them.
Likewise, don't fall for obvious bait. In the smash thread some idiot was boasting about buying like 50 megaman and shulks to scalp and was clearly fishing for replies.
I wish I could get a Meta Knight but they're all sold old out on preorders.
Was the discontinued thing ever like officially confirmed/debunked? Ever since that shit started, it's nearly impossible to find certain amiibo characters in the market thanks to scalpers and the such.
I just want a villager figure :\
i planned on buying just one of these things (Captain Falcon) just to mess with the super smash brothers AI training thing but he's hard to find for some dumb reason.
can i just use my NFC smartphone and an unofficial app to emulate amiibos?
I really REALLY hope I can get a Mega-Man.

Oh my god the same guy was on /toy/ and he also bought a fuck load of villagers and I think another one too. He kept fake shit posting (like pretending to be people pretending to be him) in order to make it seem like everyone was pissed at him. It was fucking sad.
Since it's a new thread, Sakurai tweeted a picture of Amiibos which include some from Wave 3.

I am kind of tempted to say something about discontinued/scalpers/low quantity. I am kind of pissed off at the scarcity of some of the amiibos.
Yeah if there's any you really want it's safe to say make sure you grab them while you have the chance- I mean hell Rosalina sold out in like... 20 minutes (most likely due to scalping)
If it's Mario or Luigi or Bowser or whatever it's safe to bet they'll be around for whenever if you want them but the Fire Emblem crew or Ness or people with only old games? They're going to be gone in a instant. Don't sleep on em.

I don't see why nintendo would make them artificially rare though. There's no point and it just cuts into their profits.

As far as we know they were discontinued and the one text that proved "nuh-uh" was wrong. Miyamoto has gone on record saying that they are exploring the possibility of making cards for characters who won't get reprinted down the line though (completely missing the appeal to these.)
I'm not sure how useful reprinting would be at this point honestly anyway. Villager and the other two have such a amazingly high demand that if they did get reprinted it's easy to see scalpers BUMRUSHING to grab them to continue what they do.
I don't see why nintendo would make them artificially rare though. There's no point and it just cuts into their profits.
It's because Nintendo. They make amazing games and have been giving fans reasons to love them, but they ignore them almost entirely. People have been begging for a clarification on these things and they're just humming over everyone so they don't have to deal with it.
I mean hell look how horribly botched Wave 2 was in the US where we didn't even get a release date, it was just "I heard they're on shelves" to find out stuff was actually out.
Now that we're well aware of the low scarcity, it's nigh time to get up and preorder the upcoming amiibos.
I pre-ordered all that could be pre-ordered awhile back, except for Pit and Rosalina. Those I missed.
Sadly those pre-orders are up in the air. I was part of the unlucky group of people who had their pre-order canceled with TRU. The orders were re-instated later on, but before then, I quickly pre-ordered the canceled Amiibos with Gamestop, so now I have duplicate amiibo orders in a sense.
Depending on who ships first, I will cancel the corresponding duplicate order. In the case that they both ship at the same time, I will return the duplicate.
Right now, my only worry is with Rosalina. Thankfully Feb 1st is a Sunday so that means going to the Target 1.5 hours early in the morning for me. Yes that early because, the scalping hit Houston pretty hard, I spoke with various store workers and some said most if not all of their rare wave 2s were taken by one person.

Well I guess they should continue to produce more of them. Won't hurt to make a couple thousand more Villagers and Wii Fit trainers. Common sense dictates that supply has to meet demand right and at the same time to supply enough so that the market isn't over saturated.
I bought a Link amiibo a few weeks ago just to mess around with it, and it just made me want to get more. It's really too bad that people are abusing this shortage (real or not). I think they're a really cool concept and everyone should have equal access to their favorite characters.
I got 8/12 of the first wave and 3/6 of the second waves, and all of the wave 3 with 31 Shulks to make back profit. Just need Marth, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, Pit, Captain Falcon, Rosalina, Lucario. I figured if the Shulk figures sell for a lot because of how Gamestop and Nintendo are exploiting the market to make them rare it will be easy to buy the rare ones from some scalper.

Oh just fuck off.
Why would you post that you are a scalper in a thread with scalper hate.
How do I make my Link stop blowing himself up? :v:
How do I make my Link stop blowing himself up? :v:
Well you could try playing as Link and tossing bombs at him to make him learn that bombs hurt. It may or may not work. They learn weird things as they level up.

Dude fuck off no one gives a shit about your 31 Shulks
He's baiting, just ignore him.
On topic: I want to get an Amiibo for Smash but I don't know if it's worth it since I don't play Smash very often. They seem to be frequently in stock here because nobody here knows what a video game is.

They're $13, it's not a lot to lose out on. They're fun if you don't have a local buddy to play with, the Amiibo will improve as you beat up on it.
I regret not picking up Villager when I first saw him. I had him in my hands....but went with Yoshi instead. I regret it almost everyday.
How was I suppose to know he world be rare...
I feel super lucky that I got a little mac. Went to Best Buy and was told "We have like, one in the back but can't sell it till tomorrow."
Next morning the guy saw me outside before the store opened and ran into the back and gave it to me and was like "Yeah hi five I can sell it to you now!!" and I haven't seen one since.

One for every day of the month, I see.

I got one for my friend as Christmas present. He looks like Little Mac and is really into martial arts so it was a good fit.

I did the same, but with DK.
"Oh, Villager would just spam Lloyd, anyway. I'd rather go with a non-projectile fighter."
Then again, I hear DK is starting to become harder to find nowadays.

I didn't know my self. The c is the a cut in half, and the H and T are just made out of the I. :v:

Yeah seriously I don't know what's up with this, for some reason specifically on Eldin Bridge my Link Amiibo literally constantly just runs to the right edge of the map and waits for someone to enter his territory
He also isn't very good with bombs either, even though I played as Link to teach him and never really blew myself up. He uses his Boomerang a lot less than me, too, but I managed to teach him how to use arrows which was cool.
