Hello everyone! My name is Miguel Nogueira and I am a graphic designer turning concept artist (hate that label though, makes it sound like I'm an art stunter) for games, film and entertainment. I'm recently re-discovering myself and why I started making design in the first place. Opening a sketchbook here seemed like a good step to maintain the same graphic line I used to bow to. For a while, I have been a member of facepunch, facepunch members have always helped me a great deal in the past, by giving portfolio and career advice, which I followed. The idea now is that I'm hoping to open a sketchbook here to connect, inspire, get inspired with the rest of you. Everyone feel free to comment and make any kind of notes, this is my sketchbook, but you're welcome here as well. Feel free to ask anything. I'll start by posting a few pieces I did for my portfolio following a zombie/mutant oriented briefing. I had finished watching Stranger Things and I felt like doing something zombie but supernatural. I used Gnomon DVDs to support some design techniques and referenced Resident Evil art book a bit as well. Cool.
Thanks! A WIP of something I'm working on, using a 3D foundation to illustrate
Hey guys. Following up my sketchbook on game art design here. I've been inspired lately with a feature I got, it's always nice. So I went on a art spree. I'm posting a few pieces that I liked, some that I loved and well, I don't hate any of them. Let me know what you think! Finishing my 3D concept buildup And a different topic, elemental nymph concepts Later on, I also did some quick value drawings, inspired by Massive Black's Zhang Lu
I fell in love with the design of Infected Unit 3. The most unique among the other infected enemies I saw here. Not knowing exactly the Theme you want to follow, I highly suggest to draw more obscure creatures like the one I like. The reason I also think this design works, it that it's mutation "respectful" and it feels natural. Not just a mutation that fells painful for the infected.
Man you're awesome. These are really good, I could see you working on a game like Resident Evil or Silent Hill for sure
These are great, loving 3 and patient.
Thanks guys! This is good to know, I apply different processes to come up with these designs, so it's awesomely useful to know which come out to be more striking. For now, I'm turning a bit around from the dark and monster vibe to take advantage of the inspirational wind from watching Utopia series. I knew I had to do something along the lines of criminals, heist, crime specialists, but still kind of funny. The anatomy is custom made/cartoon style, trying to break from the strict human anatomy from old master schools a bit. WIP!
Hello 2017! This is Part 2: And some prop design for a different project:
Hello to you sexy peeps. Here's more of what I've been up to, unfortunately I did so much drawing in this cold winter, that I got frostbit, so while I can't draw a lot, I am updating my sketchbook. ... With some samurai and technique exploration And because you've all liked my horror pieces, I did some environments, to fill in some blanks of environment work I may add some ghosts, I dont know yet. It seems kind of... overdone by everyone
Hello ladies and gents. I've been wanting to post artwork here, I really am, but due to NDA's, I can't show the work I've been freelancing for, it's a shame, because its the best environment work I've done to date. Meanwhile, i've been running a personal project, my version of Neuromancer novel by William Gibson, which is such a wonderful read, the story is so intense... -- Here are a few thumbnails. Looking back to the first vehicle thumbnails I did a year ago, I see how laughable they were back then, they had a lot of function errors and process mistakes too... but I was learning perspective at that time, so I was trying to solve multiple problems at once. (that's so me.) I did these while experimenting new processes. If it was for a client, I wouldn't start flat out 2D, but maybe trace and draw/photo manipulate on top of a base car.. however, since these are personal and experimental workflows, I it doesn't hurt to take the longer route, as long as I'm growing my skill-set. -- This time I took some time looking at real cars, car advancements, DARPA and Lexus Int for reference both on aestethics side and the function side. I was inspired by Lexus hover skateboard for the tech at first, but I really liked the wheel car the best. I hope I have time to continue this project. Also some more zombie busts I did a month ago, experimenting the same process but with more evolved design languages, forms and shapes than what I did 6 months ago. (Jeez, time flies by!) Are you going to be doing your own interpretations of a lot of the set pieces of Neuromancer or just vehicles?
Yeah actually! I already have a pretty good idea of how I'll portray Case and Molly, some environments and key scenes of the story. It's gonna be a lot of fun but a lot of work! Thanks for the comment!
