The games feature a mix of turn-based battle simulation, 4X (eXpand, eXploit, eXplore and eXterminate) elements and role-playing. Humour via spoken character comments is a trademark of the series. The personalities of the individual mercenaries range from mildly eccentric to disturbed. This contrasts the games' setting which is otherwise closely linked to such subjects as war and death. The player must recruit mercenaries as they explore, capture, and hold new territory. The natives harvest the valuable trees from which a revolutionary medicine can be extracted; a result of the island having been used as a nuclear testing ground in 1952. The more trees the player holds, the more income they make. Income can be used to hire native guards and hire more mercenaries to take the offensive and clear more sectors of enemies. It features a different format, however, and is considered by some to be more of a spin-off than a sequel. This game features the same engine and top-down perspective as the original game. It is the third game in the Jagged Alliance series, and was followed by the expansion Unfinished Business in 2000. Two commercial releases of the mod Wildfire are also available as expansion packs. Jagged Alliance 2 and the Unfinished Business expansion were combined in the Jagged Alliance 2 Gold Pack, released on August 6, 2002. The game takes place in the fictional country of Arulco, which has been ruled by the ruthless monarch Deidranna for several years. The player is put in control of several hired mercenaries and with aid of local citizens and militia must reclaim Arulco's cities and ultimately defeat Deidranna. The game uses a strategic map screen of Arulco where player may issue high level strategic orders for their troops, such as travelling or prolonged training. Combat and individual location exploration takes place in tactical screen, where player can issue individual direct commands to their mercenaries, such as run, shoot, talk and so on. The game features a wide variety of guns, armour, and items that the player may use. Stracciatella - The goal of the project is to make Jagged Alliance 2 available on a wide range of platforms, improve its stability, fix bugs and provide a stable platform for mod development. Moddability is still in the early stages.
I fucking love JA2 with 1.13
JA2 was a fun time. Shame the turn based combat isn't up my alley.
JA2 is still one of the best games out there, period. i still hop on it every now and again today even though it really is hard to want to sit down and start a new campaign shame JA3 was just a retarded spinoff of ja2. they didn't even try to make a new storyline
back in action was kinda fun in its own shitty way
Yeah, BiA wasn't anywhere near as bad as it seemed, esp with certain mods. If it were tightened up a bit in all aspects, it'd be pretty great, but its combat is only slightly less clunky than 7.62 High Caliber.
Love this series. Shout out to JA1 getting a release as a DSi title.
Love this series. Shout out to JA1 getting a release as a DSi title.
As someone who has JA1 for DS, it's a goddamn mess to play with a glitchy touch screen.
I remember that mod which basically added every gun ever and a ton of different types of ammo, I loved just playing it to try everything out. It had the Erma SR100 which was the first I ever heard of, and holy shit that thing was accurate as hell.
Is BiA worth trying out at all?
I think so, Back in Action is fun. Until they nerfed snipers, but it's still quite good. It's like Door Kickers in a way, but with the Jagged Alliance inventory and loot system
BIA is "okay," but it plays differently than JA2 since it's no longer turn-based. i think a lot of us hardcore ja2 players are spoiled by the 1.13 mod, so we expect it to play one way while BIA plays more like commandos than it does jagged alliance and we just don't like change
JA2 with sci-fi enabled was some spooky shit. I love it.
