It was directed by Doug Church with Warren Spector serving as producer. The game is set aboard a space station in a cyberpunk vision of the year 2072. Assuming the role of a nameless hacker, the player attempts to hinder the plans of a malevolent artificial intelligence called SHODAN. Critics praised System Shock and hailed it as a major breakthrough in its genre. It was later placed on multiple hall of fame lists. The game was a moderate commercial success, with sales exceeding 170,000 copies, but Looking Glass ultimately lost money on the project. A sequel, System Shock 2, was released by Looking Glass Studios and offshoot developer Irrational Games in 1999. A remake of the first game is under development by Nightdive Studios. I am just in love with the vibes given off of the gameplay demo of the kickstarter project. Giving the demo a download now, really looking forward to it.
What I'm seeing in the gameplay videos is really starting to grow on me. Not really sure what to think of SHODAN's re-interpretation though. I love the ethereal style but her face itself is very baby-ish. I always imagined a modern interpretation of her face being very uncanny valley and unsettling to look at. Something that's very obviously a formless entity living in the network cables who, after going rogue, is no longer as concerned with the subtle human details in how she manifests herself onscreen to talk to staff on station. [editline].[/editline] That came out a lot more bombastic than I meant it to :v: [editline].[/editline] This is my over-imaginative 10-year-old self coming out again, but I could imagine audio logs from just before all hell broke loose making "what the hell is wrong with SHODAN's face?" remarks.
Play the demo, its incredible
I would, but I'm running on a shitty laptop with integrated Intel graphics at the moment :(
My post in the SH thread is relevant here... The demo was fun up until I crashed, but it did feel like System Shock. Playing it myself instead of watching Polygon definitely made me feel more confident in it. I will admit the demo does still feel pretty alpha though. I'm skeptical on the stretch goals though...
Enemy limb dismemberment, More puzzles, Ammo types/weapon settings, Vending machines, Basic crafting/research, RPG leveling with perks/skills, Weapon upgrading, Hardcore mode (No respawning), Ironman mode (Only 1 savegame. If you die, the save is deleted)
I do not care for a lot of this, the only things I like are Hardcore/Ironman mode (which sound like exactly the same thing so this needs clarification. Does Hardcore mode eliminate cyborg conversion chambers but you can reload your save? What's going on here?) The vending machines, research, rpg, and crafting were not elements of SS1, and I liked it that way. "Character progress" such as it was, was finding the better equipment, not some arbitrary damage and accuracy boost. They're claiming faithfulness to the original, but these elements would be contrary to that. The inventory system is already borrowing from SS2. I don't have any say in what they decide to do, but I would be disappointed if they decided to break faith and add these elements. If they want to reboot SS2, they should go reboot SS2, not remake the original in the image of its successor. That's my two cents anyway. I like the demo, and I accept them taking small liberties, but I'm afraid of them actually changing the game. Black Mesa got it right, they reimagined Half Life without compromising the actual gameplay. I'm also impressed at destructible lights, it's not a huge deal really but it's still kinda cool.
the demo has a very interesting visual style, where it's obvious that everything is on a fairly large grid
the demo has a very interesting visual style, where it's obvious that everything is on a fairly large grid
I think that's more a side effect of how accurately they copied the level layout of the original.
something about the art direction bothers me. You've got pixellated, unfiltered textures, but some are far bigger and more obvious than others (hit a glass panel with the pipe to see it) and imo it ends up hurting the overall look and feel of the game. If this remake is supposed to look current gen, then let it be current gen in entirety, I say. Consider how Black Mesa reinvented hl1.
Don't forget that System Shock 3 is a thing, it just doesn't have any info yet except the website. http://othersidetease.com/sss.php
I've just backed this myself. It's still early days, I would like to believe they will iron out the kinks and will remain faithful to the original game.

You can build mountains of empty soda cans.
Seems my computer has a white screen if I try to play the reboot's demo, and it turns black and I hear sound if I get into the game, but nothing ever visually loads. Guess this is a good sign that my computer can't keep this up anymore. That or it only works properly on Windows 10? No idea.
The Kickstarter video has a poster of No One Lives Forever in a developers room. I remember this studio trying to do something with the franchise
Just finished the demo, I absolutely love the vibes I'm getting from it. Animations for picking up items look nice, but they're a touch long and are jarring how fluid and detailed they are compared to normal gameplay. Maybe it's just me though. Sounds silly but one of my favorite things is the ability to lean, feels like forever since I've played a game you could do that in. [vid]https://my.mixtape.moe/nueiqm.mp4[/vid] Kinda nostalgic.
The Kickstarter just recently passed $500k, I'm certain this thing is at least going to hit a few stretch goals by the end of its campaign. Very much looking forward to more on the game!
→ $900k Goal: Modern Inventory Management, Modern Controls, New Puzzles, Updated Faithful Levels, Game Difficulty Modes. → $1.7m Goal : Enemy limb dismemberment, More puzzles, Ammo types/weapon settings, Vending machines, Basic components/research, RPG progression, Weapon upgrading, Hardcore mode (No respawning), Ironman mode (Only 1 savegame.
Look further down on the kickstarter page.
Oh wow, it's nothing new compared to what's towards the top of the page, the 3-4 blurred goals are interesting though.

Basically, don't worry, there's gonna be plenty of techno music present within the final game, just with some orchestral touches. Additionally, they've set up a reddit forum for feedback between the devs and the community, and the devs have been pretty active on it. I would recommend checking it out: https://www.reddit.com/r/systemshock/
It's clear to me that Night Dive are fans of the games just as much as anyone else. That and the fact that the Kickstarter has only $70k (~8% of the goal) to go within 21 days gives me faith

Night Dive have been putting a lot of effort to help prove they can provide a quality product. My only wonder currently is how far the funding will reach into the stretch goals. Honestly wouldnt mind RPG elements so long as a classic mode was provided.
I fund very, very few things. So far I've only backed one thing. This has now made it two.
$70,000 away from hitting its goal. It's pretty much a lock now, boys. :D
I fund very, very few things. So far I've only backed one thing. This has now made it two.
Hopefully I'll soon be on that boat. The only thing I backed prior was We Happy Few.
Hopefully they reach all the stretch goals. I know a lot of people probably don't want the RPG mechanics etc, but I think it could be fun. I liked how it worked in SS2; the only real problem with it was that it wasn't balanced well, not that it existed.
Hopefully they reach all the stretch goals.
That'd be awesome, but at the rate it's going (even after all the exposure + demo) that's not likely, especially not those hidden ones. Hard to say this early but comparing with how previous big kickstarted games went, I'd guess it ends somewhere around $1.3-1.5 mill. But i'd be happy to be wrong and see it do even better. Can't wait for this
Kickstarters tend to spike in the last few days if something's popular, though the opposite can happen too if there are bogus backers who don't follow through.
Games Done Quick is going to have a System Shock: Enhanced Edition any% run in a little bit here, after Hexen finishes up.
i find it funny that i reconized maxofs2d animation specially the pipe since it reminds me of the old rust animation. i hope he improve the animations and dont start shitting up the backer fourm or kickstarter page like back then
