One of the recurring themes in a lot of the games I really enjoy playing (or have previously really enjoyed playing) is;
1 - Create a Sorceror character from scratch
2 - RPG style leveling up system of any kind
3 - Large selection of spells (and if not, then a very unique way of implementing them)
The spellcasting doesn't have to be the main focus of the game, in fact, it's better if its a class based game where you can opt in or out of magic.
I want you guys to post some good suggestions and i'll just make a quick list of the ones I really rate.
So in no particular order...
Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion

Platform : Ps3 360 PC
-It's played from a first person perspective
-You are not locked into any particular class
-Ass load of spells and the tools to create your own
-Level up and unlock skills non-linearly
-Open world
Neverwinter Nights

Platform : PC
-Real time hybrid game, based on D&D rules
-Different schools of magic and wizards to play as with many different spells
-Customisable magical combat pets
-Class based
-Able to selectively choose which spells you want to bring to battle
-Non-linear but not open world
Blaze & Blade

Platform : PS1 (also PC, but that version is so bad)
-Heavily class based
-Top down
-Real time casting system (hold select and enter face key button combos, they get really long)
-4 player
-Non-linear but not open world
World of Warcraft

Platform : PC
- Class based
- 3rd person
- Very very large selection of spells over several classes with talent trees to specialize within
-Open world
-TIME CONSUMING
Demon's Souls

Platform : PS3
-Class based but only when creating a character, you are then free to multiclass as much as you want.
-Reasonable selection of spells but spells come in to support the melee, can get hard playing a straight wizard class but still very possible.
-Non-linear but not open world.
-Difficult game
Dark Messiah : Might and Magic

Platform : PC 360
-First person, real-time
-Satisfying combat mechanics such as an ice spell that can freeze enemies in place or if shot at the ground can cause enemies to trip up (with hilarious consequences)
-Skill points based game, no classes as such
-Linear
-Reasonable blasty fun multiplayer aspect
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, I will probably add to this list but I very much encourage you guys to submit ones because I want a new game to play :c00l:
dragon age: origins
Guildwars
Platform: PC
-MMO with 5 spell casting classes(and another 5 non spell casting) Level cap at 20 with changeable attributes
-You can have 8 skills from any two classes of your choice.
-each class has close to a hundred skills.
When I saw this I had a picture in my head of Wizard Olympics.

This. Some of the higher level spells were just so over the top it made me cry a bit in joy just to watch them go boom.
Wheres Morrowind :( Some could say it has even better Spell Casting than oblivion.

No reason you can't add it. Give reasons as to why its got good spell casting.
As I said, that was just the list of games I could come up with in 5 minutes or so. There are going to be more and half the point of this thread is bringing the obscure ones to surface :D
The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind:
-In-depth Spell creation, Enchantment on items Ect
-Interesting Spell casting
-Alchemy
Diablo 2
It has more spells than Oblivion if I remember right.
TES3 fyi.
One of the reasons I didn't like torchlight was that you couldn't custom create your own character, you had to use their stock alchemist dude.
I couldn't stand him.
Diablo 2!
Black And White and Black And White 2, although you play as a god so I'm not sure that it counts.
Black And White and Black And White 2, although you play as a god so I'm not sure that it counts.
I can see where your coming from on that one. It's got an interesting mechanic to cast spells i'll give you that, but there isn't much variety. All of the spells have multiple uses which is nice but it's quite predictable in that way.
I always loved the Shield Miracle. I always...
Blew armies away.

Shield miracle was good because it only blew away the enemy troops and never your own troops or villagers.
Anyway, what other magey games we got then?
Lost Magic for the Nintendo DS? Lots of spells in there to use.

Neverwinter Nights

Gah! Nostalgia! I'm gonna go play that again. Make a sorcerer and fuck some shit up.
Dungeons & Dragons
Just finished playing a spell caster in Dark Messiah an hour ago, the spells are really satisfying (combat in general) and I discovered many uses and strategies for the different spells. I can't name a favorite spell though freeze was pretty fun.
Just reading the title of this thread made me think of Lost Magic for the DS for some reason.

You cast spells by drawing their symbols, you can also get minions and control them in a similar manner to RTS games.
I remember Lost Magic. That game pissed me off. In a good way :v:
Ultima online
Torchlight. Alchemist. Ember lance. mega spell casting
Not a single mention of Arx Fatalis? What the fuck?
About the Game
This critically acclaimed first-person RPG takes the player on an amazing journey into the fantasy world of Arx. The game mixes intelligent story with immersive and actual medieval surroundings. Arx Fatalis allows the player to feel that all his actions have a direct consequence on those around him.
The goal of the game is to destroy the secret cult of Akbaa, the god of destruction. As a player, you must prevent the return of such a cruel creature to the physical world. Should you fail, Akbaa is bound to impose its terror upon the world of Arx.
You will become the hero of an underground world - with weapons, spells and magical items to defend against goblins, trolls, rat-men and other vicious opponents.
Besides brute force, stealth and the "onscreen gesture based magic system" are the three alternative ways to succeed. Using the mouse, flaming runes can be drawn in mid-air. A combination of these gestures can create powerful magic spells that will protect you or empower you to defeat opponents and pursue the quest.

My memories of Arx Fatalis:
"I DREW A FUCKING TRIANGLE! NOT A FUCKING STAR! FUCK YOU GAME!"
I died by casting the wrong spell so many times it's not even funny.
