Night in the Woods is a 2D adventure game where the player failing is just another venue to add more flavor into the story. You play as Mae Borowski, a college dropout living in their family's home... in a city that is so run down and empty of jobs that there's practically nothing to do.
Also, there's something in the woods.
The game releases on Februrary 21st, 2017 (almost one month from now!), but you can download two mini-games made to edge the viewer into the play style and world of the game here:

With a game that has taken almost 2 whole years to get published with the release date being pushed back a few times, we finally have the solid release date to look forward to. If the trailer and supplemental games don't satisfy you, you can take a look at extended gameplay here:

I'd better start buttering my toast, 'cause this looks like it's going to be my JAM.
This looks amazing, definitely a world I could get lost in for a while. Finally something to look forward to this year at least, there's not a whole lot of upcoming games that have really caught my eye so far.
I've been following this since the kickstarter, not crazy hyped about it but still very interested in playing it, definitely on the top of my list.
Seems like the soundtrack is going to be stellar as well, I'm so hyped for this. I can't believe I've never heard of it before now.

I have a feeling this game is going to break my heart.
Got this game on my radar for a while now, interesting premise! Is there beyond just hanging around town and some possible super natural stuff?
I don't mind if there isn't, I like my stories well-written, succinct; pure and simple. Got tired of saving the world, honestly.
This actually looks pretty neat.
Reminder, game's coming out in a day!
I have little expectations from this game but this is interesting and cheap enough for me to pick it up.
I just got done playing Lost Constellation.
Instantly went to buy this. Definitely my kinda game.

I hope it's pretty lengthy too, LC was about an hour long and it was totally free.
Well, color me interested.
Not going to lie, I actualy wouldn't have known if this game was coming out if I didnt read that post
They really needed to advertise a bit more.
Been waiting for this for ages. Didn't know we had a thread already.

Who knows but it gives me the impression it's not gonnna be very long. I belive they said its multiple endings since you have to decide how you spend your time and who you hang out with or something, so it's gonna have decent replayability at least

I dunno. Lost Constellation took me little over an hour to complete and that was just a supplementary game they made in less than a month.
And apparently the soundtrack is massive.

I guess we'll see how this turns out, I have high hopes.

Hopefully it'll turn out better than my merge at least.
Is this game going to unlock in 5 minutes or what. It's like 2am in the fucking morning here and I ain't going to bed without at least starting the download.
Edit: Ok game's out, 1.1gb download. Good night. Grumpy guy, signing off.

Nope, now it's been delayed for another month. Thanks.
Four hours in so far and man I am seriously loving this game. It's so much better than I was hoping, too. Spent like half an hour just fucking around in that laptop demontower game. fyi it seems to be a bit bugged with that guy that gives you the code at the level start. If you kill him you'll have to restart the entire game (as in NITW itself) to get him to spawn again. Like yea I get that he won't respawn for that run if you kill him, but even restarting the program still wouldn't bring him back lol oops not my fault he startled me by being directly beside me at the start of the stage.
4 hours in the game as well and story vibe is pretty much this:

The guy made Aquaria 10 years ago and it too had 50 tracks or something. It's insane that he programmed the whole thing and also made all the tracks. Unfortunately he left the story on a cliffhanger and will probably never finish it.
This game is so gooood, the atmosphere is absolutely nailed down and the OST thus far has been really good. , Story wise the game hits me pretty close... im also surprised at the amount of minigames and stuff that keeps the game from being a monotome conversation simulator.. also demontower is awesome
Finished da game, 10+ hours:
Maybe just me but [sp]game structure felt very similar to Firewatch? Both features protags who are running away from their problems and game focuses hugely on character development and relationships.
Both games throws in this "shit got serious mysterious dangerous" arc late in and it resolves itself in like, 50 minutes. Cue ending almost immediately after.
NitW got more characters, better elapsed world and side attractions compared to Firewatch but still involves running around the town 10 times over. At least this has got replayability on who to hang out with.
Story got tied up a little too... neatly? I felt that they answered too much? Now that I don't really got anything to discuss about (plot).
I like the exchanges between Mae, her group and her parents.[/sp] Excellent writing.
Crimes?
Crimes.
So I'm a few hours in and LOVING it so far. The atmosphere, writing, and style are all top-notch. Not to mention the game does a superb job of being both heart-warmingly charming or gut-wrenchingly real when it chooses to be. I dropped out of college (though I did go back) and having to go back home and deal with the feeling of defeat was something I really struggled with, so there are times where this game hits me on a deep level. The characters are great too. I was especially impressed with Bea. I didn't like her at all to begin with but they do a great job developing her.
Pisses me off that I can already see game having a bit of an Undertale situation surrounding it. I was in a stream of it and it was already seeing people flocking in to shit on it for being "SJW pander-bait" with "shitty cringe writing" and "Life is Strange dialogue"...
Looks like steam achievements only just today got turned on. Sucks since I'm like half-way into this game but o well. Time to play demontower yet again
this game is gr8 tho so whatever
Personal thoughts after finishing my second play through of the game:
[sp]I still can't get over that awful ending. They set up for so much in the epilogue that it makes me sad that I won't ever be able to see what comes of it! The climax, too, jeez. You figure it out and then you resolve it almost 10 minutes later.[/sp]
omw to second playthru
just wanted to say that I appreciate the concept of Mae having loving parents. If this game would get a bigger budget, wide commercialized, and story outsourced, I swear her mom would be a religious nut and dad's alcoholic who left town with another women etc because "heeey I can write depressing angst teen story too!" Altho I would add that the current story would do well without the [sp] whole Cthulhu cult thing [/sp].

But Mae's father [sp]used to be an alcoholic and was violent towards the both of them[/sp] and her mother [sp] is essentially a religious nut but understands Mae's comfort space enough to not force her to go to church [/sp]

[sp] They didn't amplify the heck out of the concept so that's great! Plus they still love her very much.[/sp]
Add:
ooh yeah... did the choices with [sp]granddad[/sp] at the beginning of the game matter? Or is it just a flavor thing?
[sp] just finished the game. neat! can't imagine how much the game branches and develops as a result of your choices. looking forward to a graph or something made on that. something that I feel like I should mention since I don't think i've heard anyone talk about this... you know those weather wheels on roof tops? jump by them. they send a little package up to the sky. I got 3/4(?). one I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get to. it's atop a building that says 1904, or something? I think to the left of the girl who takes you to the train tracks, likes horror movies. jenny? can't remember her name. anyway, maybe someone smarter and more dedicated than me can figure that out.
additionally, don't kill the lil' fella in demontower on floor 2. he tells you some secrets for the true ending.
also, shame that achievements are still sorta broken, since i'm pretty sure i've done things that would warrant an achievement, based on guesswork from PS4 trophy desc. since steam ones are all hidden.
for example, anyone wrap up the tooth thread? mine ended in epilogue by giving it to dad. (which, I think means he plans on getting some sort of retribution, if we follow old miners tradition...? probably in the form of picketing. right? right.)
or how about the musicians thread, with the tongue twister band name I can't remember? I found two musicians, but i'm not sure if there's more -- as eluded to by their old myths and the four players in mae's dreams(?)
there's probably a lot still hidden in this game. cool, though. super cool. [/sp]
Just finished it. That game was thoroughly delightful from start to finish. And yeah I'm curious about how much shit I missed as well. Gonna do a second playthrough soon, and looking forward to seeing what people uncover about the game as well.
[editline]23rd February 2017[/editline]
wheres the OST at ffs. I want to re-listen to some of these songs, especially those great dream sequence songs.
Also, if you want to see an early WIP of the opening cut-scene the devs were doing before they decided to not do fancy cut-scenes, take a peak in:
Steam\steamapps\common\Night in the Woods\Night in the Woods_Data\StreamingAssets\PS4
It's gonna be deleted in the next patch for some reason tho so check quick if you're curious
