Game Info
Game Dev Tycoon is an upcoming isometric business simulation game by new studio Greenheart Games, and is in the same vein as Game Dev Story.
Start in the 80's in your garage, developing the games you want to make. As you gain success and capital, you can move out and into your own office, hiring a team, and developing for various platforms. The bigger your team gets, the bigger and more complex the games you make can become.
They're withholding a lot of information about the game, to try and not spoil anything, but the dev's have been saying that as you get bigger, you can undergo industry changing projects. One of which is for an "internet based distribution platform for games. The platform features DRM to combat piracy, and enables a new market for smaller developers to show off their products". Sound familiar?
From their site:
Start your adventure in a small garage office in the 80s. Enjoy the hand-crafted level design while you develop your first simple games. Gain experience, unlock new options and create your first game engine.
Create games your way
In Game Dev Tycoon the decisions you make during development really matter. Decide which areas you want to focus on. Does your game need more gameplay or should you focus more on quests? These decisions will have a major impact on the success of your game.
Expand your company
Once you have successfully released a few games you can move into your own office and forge a world-class development team. Hire staff, train them and unlock new options.
Make larger, more complex games
With experience and a good team, you can release larger, more complex games. Larger games bring new challenges and you will have to manage your team well to deliver hit games.
Unlock labs and conduct industry-changing projects
Move beyond just releasing games and conduct industry-changing projects by unlocking labs later in the game. There are a number of secret projects that can be completed.
Less Social. Less Ville. More Game.
We love simulation games and that’s why we are proud to bring the very first simulation game to the Windows Store. It isn’t one of these ‘social’ or ‘ville’ type games either but a solid single player tycoon game which have become way too rare in our opinion. In Game Dev Tycoon there are no virtual coins that you need to buy. You don’t need to invite or bother your friends to be able to progress and developing a game or gaining experience doesn’t have you waiting for hours or days, it happens right in front of you. In order to give you this experience the game is not free but has a small up-front price. By purchasing the game you can enjoy a pure experience without constant reminders to purchase something and without distracting ads. You also support a small start-up and help to make sure that we can bring you more games in the future.
Built for the Windows 8 Store
Game Dev Tycoon is exclusively available on the Windows 8 Store and we have designed the game to make the most of the platform. Use touch devices or mouse and keyboard to play the game. Install the game on up to five of your Windows 8 devices. Save-games are automatically synchronized for your convenience. More information on Windows 8 and how you can upgrade from Windows XP, 7 or Vista is available on www.windows.com

Wow! I'm interested.
Hah! That's a really neat idea, I love tycoon games.
Game dev story consumed my life.
Only for windows 8? Well I'm dissapointed, I love game dev story.
So this will be Windows 8 only?
Nevermind. Found it. Time to give this a shot.
So this will be Windows 8 only?
Sadly, yes.
Their site says, in regards to a port to other platforms:
In the foreseeable future the game is only available on Windows 8.

So this will be Windows 8 only?
Yeah, the FAQ says they won't be making it for other platforms in the foreseeable future, which is a goddamn shame. It looked really good, but I'm just not interested in upgrading right now.
I click the "Go to Windows Store" button and it does nothing... And I can't find it manually on the store. Dang it. For the Lite version.
The full game isn't out yet.
According to the devs, it should be approved sometime between the 12th and the 19th.
I don't see what's wrong with it being Windows 8 only (Apart from people on OSX on Linux). People need to learn that they can't just sit around on the same OS forever, and if you don't like metro you don't have to use it
wow its like i'm really garry
It would be one thing if you were talking about XP but w7? No, There's still plenty of life in this OS unlike XP and Vista.

there we go
Game Dev Story 2 is free for the PC in Japanese. There's an english patch somewhere, but I haven't played it in a long time.
By the way, the download link is under the third subheading and it's the second blue link.

Windows 8 brings little new features and has no ties to anything I want or need.

The English patch sucks though. Only about 1/3 is translated, while the rest is just a series of question marks.
Well, I played the Lite version for a bit and I must say, it is fun and very rewarding when you finally pump out a new game that rocks the reviews. The slider bar thing is hard to adjust to, and its REALLY easy to go bankrupt (I haven't finished the 3 year trial yet, always ended by going bankrupt) but its still pretty fun. Maybe not worth $8 though... Probably $4 or $5. Either way, still fun but a slight learning curve plus patience.

This is a native WinRT app - meaning designed solely for the 'Metro' interface. So yes, in this case you DO have to use it.

Except some people don't want to install Windows 8 just to get an app in the Windows store (which is probably why this is Windows 8 only).
Game Dev Story consumed my life after finding out about it. This seems awesome, too.
Fuck. I knew this would happen with windows 8.
After playing Game Dev story I am itching to play this.
The full version is now out if anyone has been waiting.
Can I develop games and take some content out in order to sell it later as overpriced dlc?
Can I develop games and take some content out in order to sell it later as overpriced dlc?
I tried focusing on marketing, rushing everything while putting all points into hype and fame. Still made tons of money heh
Seems like a realistic simulation to me then :v:
So If I set my name to Notch I'll do nothing but take Vacations?
Holy shit, I literally went from nearly bankrupt to 1 million with one game. I got 3 10s from reviews after making like 5 very shitty games straight.
If there are more games like this for Windows 8 only, I may have some reasons to get it.
Though I do hope they make it available to other OS'.
They should include advertising options such as which game event to broadcast trailers and what kind of trailers you should make and you should bribe certain game journalists to hype your game.

Uh because windows 8 just came out and as much as I've liked of what I've seen I'm not available to purchase it RIGHT THIS MOMENT?
