Within 15 years, the western world had received intelligence that warned of a weapon of mass destruction that was supposedly being constructed deep within the fortress. High-tech Special Forces unit FOXHOUND, commanded by the legendary soldier Big Boss, sent their best agent, Gray Fox to infiltrate the stronghold. However, days later, contact with Gray Fox was lost, his final transmission consisting only of two words: "METAL GEAR..." With the goal of rescuing Gray Fox and uncovering the meaning of the cryptic message, rookie operative Solid Snake is sent into Outer Heaven alone. The Zanzibar Land Disturbance - 1999 The Cold War had thawed, and it seemed nuclear proliferation would soon be a thing of the past. Despite this, all was not well in the world. A series of shocks to the oil market spurred the development of new high-tech energy sources, including fusion power. However, most vehicles still relied on oil for power. Oil reserves were at a critical low, and the world community was prepared to take drastic measures, either by drilling into sand and shale for more oil, despite the difficulty -- or moving on to renewable fuels. Such steps proved unnecessary when Czech scientist, Dr. Kio Marv, successfully bio-engineered a new species of algae, OILIX, that could produce petroleum-grade hydrocarbons with little expense and effort. Marv presented the algae to the World Energy Conference in Prague, and was on his way to a demonstration in the United States when he was kidnapped by soldiers from Zanzibar Land. NATO discovers that Zanzibar Land's leaders plan to hold the world hostage by controlling the supply of oil, and some good old-fashioned nuclear brinkmanship, courtesy of a stockpile of nukes. Solid Snake is then brought out of retirement by FOXHOUND's new commander, Roy Campbell, and is sent to Zanzibar Land to rescue Dr. Marv. Shadow Moses Incident - 2005 The night before the signing of the START III Accord, a nuclear weapons facility on Shadow Moses Island, off the coast of Alaska, was captured by Next-Generation Special Forces, led by members of FOXHOUND. Under the command of Liquid Snake, FOXHOUND and the NGSF formed the Sons of Big Boss, and initiated an armed revolt against the United States Government. In addition, they also held hostages on the island, including the DARPA Chief Donald Anderson and ArmsTech President Kenneth Baker, both of whom also carried the PAL override codes. Threatening the White House with a nuclear strike, the Sons of Big Boss demanded that the government hand over the remains of Big Boss, giving them a deadline of 24 hours. In addition, the Sons of Big Boss, to prove that they weren't bluffing about their capability of supplying a nuclear strike, also supplied the serial number to the U.S. Government. The Genome Soldiers of the NGSF had been subject to advanced gene therapy, involving the use of Big Boss's "soldier genes" to enhance their combat skills and senses.Big Boss's DNA was considered to be a priceless treasure to the U.S. military, and the government could not allow it fall into the wrong hands. Manhattan Tanker Incident / Big Shell Incident - 2007~2009 After the Shadow Moses incident, technological data on the nuclear-armed walking tank Metal Gear leaks onto the black market. Solid Snake and his allies form the anti-Metal Gear NGO "Philanthropy" and set out in pursuit of a tanker carrying a new Metal Gear prototype. But Snake falls into a trap set by former FOXHOUND member Ocelot, and is believed lost along with the tanker at the bottom of the Hudson River. Two years later, the Big Shell, an oil spill cleanup facility constructed on the bay, is taken over by terrorists led by a man claiming to be the long-lost Solid Snake. The government sends Raiden, a new recruit in the new FOXHOUND, to infiltrate the Big Shell and rescue the US President, who is held hostage inside... The underlying theme of this second entry in the series is "memes," or cultural genes. Virtuous Mission / Operation Snake Eater - 1964 The story shifts back in time to 1964, the height of the Cold War. Naked Snake-the man who would later become the legendary mercenary known as Big Boss-heads into Soviet territory to help the scientist Sokolov defect to the West. But the mission ends in failure due to the betrayal of Snake's mentor and mission advisor The Boss, a female soldier known as "the Mother of Special Forces." The Boss defects to the Soviet Union, taking a miniature nuclear warhead with her as a gift, which her new hosts promptly launch at a Russian research facility. Naked Snake heads once more into the Soviet Union on a mission to kill The Boss... The third MGS game tells the story of men and women who struggle to remain loyal even while their fates are at the mercy of the ever changing political "scene." Often considered the best game in the franchise, Metal Gear Solid 3 moves away from sneaking through buildings and focuses on the great outdoors. Instead of playing as Solid Snake, like in every other Metal Gear game, the game focuses on a previous villain in the series, Big Boss. San Hieronymo Takeover - 1970 Six years after the events of Operation Snake Eater, Naked Snake's former team, FOX, has broken their allegiance with the CIA and gone renegade. Snake himself is also targeted by the FOX unit, which sent renegade FOX unit soldiers to attack and capture him. Snake is tortured and interrogated by one of the members of FOX, Lieutenant Cunningham, who's trying to locate the whereabouts of the missing half of the Philosophers' Legacy, with the United States Government having already acquired the other half of the Legacy from the Soviet Union at the conclusion of Operation Snake Eater. Snake is imprisoned in a cell next to Roy Campbell, the sole survivor of an American Green Beret team sent in to investigate the base. Snake learns through Campbell that they're on the San Hieronymo Peninsula, the site of an abandoned Soviet missile silo in Colombia. The two escape and Snake makes his way to a communications base, where he attempts to contact his old CO, Major Zero. Instead, he is greeted by his old FOX comrades Para-Medic and Sigint, who reveal that Snake and Zero are being accused of instigating the revolt and that the only way for Snake to clear their name is to find and apprehend the leader of the rebellion, Gene. To complicate matters, Gene has also convinced most of the Russian soldiers stationed on the base to join their side by simply taking over the chain of command of a former Red Army unit, that was secretly stationed inside the Colombian territory. In order to complete his mission, Snake must persuade enemy soldiers to join his ranks. Ocelot's Insurrection - 2014 The world is in chaos, and the "war economy" has plunged the world into never-ending battle. This fuels the need for private military companies, the five largest of which (together rivaling the power of the entire United States Army) are owned by a single mother company, Outer Heaven, with Liquid Ocelot at the helm. Liquid Ocelot, a fusion of the consciousness of Liquid Snake and the body of Revolver Ocelot, is once again set on world domination and Solid Snake, now suffering advanced accelerated aging and under the codename of "Old Snake", is dispatched as a personal favor to Roy Campbell to assassinate him. Peace Walker Incident - 1974 Stories tell of a legendary solider who once waged war against the world. His name was Naked Snake, a.k.a. Big Boss, and the truth behind this legend will finally be told. The era is the 1970's . Big Boss had stationed his soldiers in Colombia, South America, where he was approached by visitors from Costa Rica, a "nation without a military." In the shadow of the Cuban Missile Crisis, as Latin America became a key to maintaining the power balance between East and West, Costa Rica had miraculously managed to maintain its peace and neutrality. However, in various regions of the country, a mysterious armed force seemed to be engaging in suspicious activities. Now, to preserve peace in this nation without a military, the soldiers move into action. In time, they would be known as the founders of "Outer Heaven." Main-Ops The Main-Ops section is composed of a ton of missions that involve the Peace Walker incident, as well as Big Boss' growth as a leader. You can play as Big Boss or any of your soldiers for most of the missions, but certain missions require that you play as Big Boss. There's some story nonsense above if you feel the need to read about it. Story Trailer Co-Ops Emulated Peace walker COOP Guide by Akujithesniper Peace Walker is the first Metal Gear Solid game to have co-op play, and it is very well done. You can co-op on just about any mission, and there are a lot of new items to use for co-op, such as the Box Tank and the Co-op Gun. Boss fights are incredibly intense with four players, and sneaking with two players is a unique experience. Co-Ops Trailer Extra Ops Peace Walker boasts hundreds of extra missions. A lot of these missions are crazy minigames that make no sense, while there are tons of mission that test your aim or your stealth. Some of the missions outright explain things going on the story mode. At any rate, Extra Ops was built for co-op play. You can, of course, solo many of the missions, but there will be a point where you'll be begging for a co-op buddy. Extra Ops Trailer Versus Ops This is the competitive side to Peace Walker. It's a lot of fun, and I'd be up for a Facepunch game. There's a variety of gamemodes, mostly borrowed from MGO. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - 1975 Big Boss is sent to a CIA Black Site on Cuba in order to rescue former member of MSF, Chico, and someone they thought they had lost forever. While that mission is ongoing, a nuclear inspection team from the UN is sent to investigate Mother Base and the MSF. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - 1984 After the fall of the Militaires Sans Frontières, Big Boss falls into a prolonged coma. The Phantom Pain takes place 9 years later when Big Boss awakes. Oh, hey, the thread is back. Anyone played the MG:S beta? I don't have a console to do so, but those I know who have played it have been cautiously optimistic.
Oh, hey, the thread is back. Anyone played the MG:S beta? I don't have a console to do so, but those I know who have played it have been cautiously optimistic.
It plays really well because it uses TPP's movement systems and engine for the most part. The beta was only a few missions of horde mode-ish side missions (hopefully), as opposed to how story mode is going to be. The zombie gameplay was mostly uninteresting to me, though. It even has L4Dish special zombies.
It was a little disappointing to see the game's main idea of fortifications and scrounging for resources go out the window with the Walker Gear side missions. As for the rewards, I get the impression that in the final game Salvage Missions are going to be the main 'renewable' source of Kuban Energy, broken gear and a generous but unreliable spread of resources while you go shopping for specific things like oil or the components to make rare resources in the open world and make small amounts of Kuban Energy along the way.
I've just found out that there's a translated design document for MGS2 floating online, it was fun to skim through. Gives an insight to Kojima's modus operandi. I like how Raiden was introduced in an attempt to solve «sequel» problem as a way to give new players head-start into the series as well as to cater to female audiences. Kojima is a great businessman!
Huh, can you link the design doc?
this is cool
MGSV needed more customization and gear for characters, seeing as there's like 3-4 headslot items in singleplayer and a bunch of doofy stupid stuff in the dead MGO. Instead the actual effort for fanservice content for the fans and customization gear is going into the goddamn zombie survival spinoff. I wouldn't be surprised if stuff like the Grey Fox helmet were intended for MGSV, got cut and repurposed here.
actual original asset "oh i bet it was just stuff they didn't put into mgsv" ?????
"I wouldn't be surprised" doesn't outright incline that I firmly believe it. It's just my cynicism at the whole thing leaking out.
this is cool
it occurs to me that if Survive lets you play as Raiden/Gray Fox with an actual sword but the movement of MGSV, it will basically be the Metal Gear Solid: Rising build from E3 2010 which means i will be obligated to get Survive
Today is the day that nuclear disarmament as been achieved by the playerbase on PC (or Konami delete them idk) most likely the later

Shh, let us pretend peace day finally arrived [t]https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/930426411756019402/E4D4941417125EED42CAFA7BFB49120C2C81722A/[/t]
And when I've had my fun? I'll sell my nukes, everyone could be a nuclear superpower! And when everyone's nuclear, heh No one will be.
I've read that it might've happened because of an overflow bug
leave it to the metal gear fans to ultimately achieve world peace by creating too many nukes
I've read that it might've happened because of an overflow bug 2,147,483,647 is the maximum value for an Int32 variable.
We weren't anywhere near that many nukes. AFAIK the highest PC has been is roughly 20,000 nuclear warheads. And if it did overflow, it wouldn't have dropped by several thousand a day, it would've instantly plummeted to zero. There are (or were, post is 15 hours old idk lol) roughly 7,500 nukes active still according to this post.
I decided to do a little digging to see what happened here. The nuke count itself didn't overflow. An accurate nuke count can be read from Konami's server on the PC and PS3 versions of the game and a site to track the count has been made here. (PC sits at ~7200 nukes currently.) You can also print this number out in-game using the TppServerManager.GetNuclearNum() function from a custom Lua script. Example here. There is another function called TppServerManager.GetNuclearMax(). It has always been somewhat unclear what this number is. I had originally thought that it was the highest number of nukes existing at one time; but this doesn't seem to be the case since the nuke count has never gotten that high. Printing this number out gives us this, which is the maximum size of a 32-bit integer. This seems to be the variable that overflowed. It's possible that this keeps track of the total count of nukes ever developed and finally overflowed from the excessive number of nukes created illegitimately on PC. A third function, TppServerManager.GetNuclearAbolitionCount(), keeps track of how many times disarmament has been achieved. Printing it out gives us this, which shows that the server believes disarmament was legitimately achieved. What does it all mean? KojiPro should've implemented an overflow check.
I don't know what the fuck is going on. Could have been a freak bug internally that didn't effect the game (aside from making it seem like a nuclear holocaust was stopped), or they could have actually intentionally triggered the event. Either way, shit's getting weird.
Why exactly did Kojima decide to turn Raiden into a cyborg after MGS2? edit: wow, I'm at the part in MGS4 where you have to run past all the gekkos after you escape with drebin, at a gekko hit me with a leg sweep and launched snake into the load area for the next part :v:
Why exactly did Kojima decide to turn Raiden into a cyborg after MGS2?
Because cyborgs are cool.
Same reason Kojima decided to have a vampire in MGS2.

What if instead of Venom Snake only existing to explain why Big Boss "died" in MG1 there were only two sons of Big Boss and Venom Snake was Solidus?
The eyepatch doesn't add up
Also Solidus has both of his eyes until the harrier fight.
Also Solidus has both of his eyes until the harrier fight.
or so it seems...........
MGS6 shows he had no eyes to begin with.
venom snake is chico
venom snake is chico
No joke, Chico may have been Gray Fox and the concept art for it looked kinda awesome.
I'm fully expecting Survive to have Punished Chico's gear at least. After playing Ace Combat: Infinity, nothing feels like a stretch for Survive if it's just equipment, especially if it has existing concept art or one of those high definition renders to work from. he question is how much of that potential is going to make it into the game and how Konami plans to deliver it. Will they be part of constant, permanent updates or limited time events? I'd be excited for an opportunity to fight an enemy based on a working Battle Gear or acquire the Skull Custom, but not if the former is part of an event that runs for two weeks and the latter has a 0.5% chance of being in a gacha box that changes every month.
No joke, Chico may have been Gray Fox and the concept art for it looked kinda awesome.
A shame that would have required backflips of ret-conning to accomplish.
What if Never Be Game Over is actually a clever trick to get people to ARG over chapter 3 thinking MGSV is not over yet, and the phrase actually means "game that never ends"? [editline]7th February 2018[/editline] As in like, they're playing the "game" of trying to find chapter 3 forever but it never comes, and the phrase has a secret meaning reflecting that
