http://www.thehunter.com/pub/ I remember there being an old thread for this back in like 09 that was fairly popular for a while, so I thought I'd make another one. The Hunter is, very unsurprisingly, a hunting game. ACTION PACKED GENERIC MUSIC GAMEPLAY VIDEO:
The Hunter is a free to play PC game that recreates hunting wild animals in as realistic a manner as possible. The initial setting is on an open world island based on various locations, including the islands and surroundings of Washington State in the USA. The free game features one huntable animal type (Mule Deer), and subscribers can unlock other animals, along with a variety of guns, bows and lures with which to hunt them. More animals are planned for future game versions. To play the player must first create a character on the game's website www.thehunter.com, which includes social networking tools and messaging capabilities to allow players to connect and share in-game experiences. Creating a character requires selecting an avatar from pool of thousands of unique faces, and adding a name. Once a character is created and the tutorial completed, the player can receive missions - initially from 'Colton Locke', a character in the game. Completing missions unlocks further missions, and introduces the player to other characters that inhabit the game world. Players must use natural cover to avoid detection by the animals in the game. Mule Deer may be hunted for free, and Whitetail, Blacktail, Roosevelt elk, Turkey, Coyote, Feral hog, Pheasant, Black bear, Moose, European wild boar, Roe deer and Red deer can be hunted by subscribers. Each animal species reacts to different stimuli in different ways. Scent detection for the quadrupeds is their keenest sense, which means the player has to be aware of wind direction or the animal might smell the player's scent and run off. Players must also pay careful attention to the soundscape, listening for subtle signals that indicate the presence of animals in the locality. The core gameplay revolves around tracking and harvesting (killing) animals with the weapons provided, although a digital camera is also provided for those who do not wish to shoot with a gun. Animal tracks can be found and identified with the optional "Huntermate" an in-game GPS-like device that identifies tracks, scat, blood trails, and animal calls and grunts. At August 2009, over 200 animals appear on the island when a game starts, located with an element of randomization. The core hunting area at launch was Whitehart Island. Free-to-play players originally started here. Then from May 2011 a large 2.3 square-mile spur called Logger's Point was made the free-to-play starting point, and access was barred from there to the main Whitehart Island unless one had a subscription. Hunting areas added since May 2011 are: Settler Creeks (rugged North American mountain forest with abandoned homesteads); Redfeather Falls (rough Canadian mountains and swamps); Hirschfelden (German highland farms and forests). Subscribers can choose to start anywhere in these hunting areas, and at any time of day. The Hunter also features minor RPG elements. As players track and spot each animal their skill in that area improves. Weapon skills can also be improved by scoring successful hits on animals. Improving the hunting skills makes animals easier to track, and a weapon will not suffer as much "wobble" when aimed. Skills, missions, and hunting statistics are recorded by the game and then displayed on the player's profile page on the website, although they cannot be seen while hunting in the game client.

Species
Mule Deer Whitetail Deer Blacktail Deer Turkey Roosevelt Elk Coyote Feral Hog Pheasant Black Bear Moose Roe Deer Wild Boar Red Deer The game also has 5 huntable areas (With another one possibly coming out in a week, along with another animal) and 17 weapons. When you first register you get a guest account, which is basically the demo of the game. This account lets you hunt Mule Deer on Logger's Point. There are other animals on Logger's Point, but it won't let you shoot them. (Their tracks don't appear either) It also gives you the .243 rifle, a scope for it, unlimited ammo (I'll get to this later) for it, a deer "bleat" lure, binoculars, and the basic set of clothes. The game also has its own currency, em$. You can buy weapons, lures, equipment, and even hunting licenses with it. You get em$ by either buying it ($1 = 100 em$, the lowest amount you can buy is $5 worth) or getting it for free by doing these promotion things. (This is what I do, I've earned $28 worth in about 3 weeks) The going rate is around 250 -100 em$ for a gun, 130 - 200 for a lure, ect. There are also subscription memberships and bundles: No idea what the conversion rate is for other currencies v:v:v There's also the German retail version
Other info
The development team is only about 10 people, so content updates aren't that frequent. THERE IS NO MULTIPLAYER AND THERE PROBABLY NEVER WILL BE There's a wiki 7 simple rules for a successful hunt Animal Maps - Where to find the different species Animal organ locations There are tutorials. You should do them. You shouldn't run. Ever. Walk or crouch. HOW TO ADD IT TO STEAM:
Make a Steam shortcut of the launcher.exe. Go to the site, log in, go to the map selection, ect. in Internet Explorer. Doesn't work Firefox, no idea about Chrome or any other browser. Press start, it'll open a window asking you if you want to run this program. The window will have a URL in it (hunt://gameserver.thehunter.com/<insertfivebillionnumbershere>/lang/en_US/) copy that, paste it at the end of the Steam shortcut target so it looks like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\theHunter\launcher\launcher.exe" hunt://gameserver.thehunter.com/asdf/lang/en_US/
Now whenever you want to play, just open that on Steam (It'll say something about session ID invalid, ignore that), go to the site on whatever browser and start it normally.
You should vote for it on Greenlight so you don't have to do that I'll add more stuff to this thread later.
Should have put the shit about having to pay to do pretty much anything in this game at the beginning, so I wouldn't have had to waste my time reading it.
holy fuck I remember playing this game I don't know what it's like now but there was solid tracking mechanics and I remember it took like 2 hours to bag my first deer. it was pretty exhilarating though is it all pay2play now? I remember without paying you only had access to one type of game and one rifle, doesn't look like it's changed
Pay to play singleplayer game? That sounds like a really great model.
This game is pretty great and looks amazing. The pay to play system is kind of a bummer though. I'd download it and just walk around and look at the pretty landscape and try to shoot some deer, it's definitely an experience. Even the "free island" feels big and looks great. It's one of the better looking games on PC.
Should have put the shit about having to pay to do pretty much anything in this game at the beginning, so I wouldn't have had to waste my time reading it.
I played about 30 hours on a guest account before buying it. Haven't put any money into it since then, like I said in the OP I've gotten $28 worth of em$ for free and it's gotten me a lot of shit. Guest account is a demo, you pay for the whole thing.
don't be discouraged by the paid stuff, you can get a good amount of content out of the free membership
Sorry for the two month bump, but it's worth it.
Sorry for the two month bump, but it's worth it.
Does this mean we can now hunt the most dangerous game?
If so, I'm getting it.
Pay to play singleplayer game? That sounds like a really great model.
It's not a pretty uncommon concept to pay for singleplayer games.
sorry for bump but does anyone play this? its really addictive was wondering if anyone wanted to try a bit of co-op.
We should play multiplayer like we did with Deer Hunter 2005 guys. I can set up a 8 slots game. Post here if you want to and tell me if you have a membership or not. Also post your name so i can add you to my friends list. [editline]16th January 2014[/editline] I'm gonna create a server, look for Nanamil in the server browser. Password : jam Map will be logger's point so free member are welcome.
Huge bump, but a worthy news for you hunting enthusiasts. http://news.thehunter.com/introducing-thehunter-call-of-the-wild/ Gonna be great. Looking forward to mp sessions.
Well, I hope I don't regret spending like $150 on the regular game.
