alternate title: Dashcon 3: Fyre Festival 2: Pokemon GO Fest
It seemed unlikely that Niantic’s first major Pokémon GO event would go off without a hitch, and so far, it appears to be drowning in them. Seemingly endless lines and connectivity issues are currently plaguing the event and the game. Called away by an unavoidable family vacation, I’m not actually at GO Fest which is taking place in my home city, but I bequeathed my hastily-purchased pass to my friend, Bret Fortuna, who is providing me with live updates from the ground. Our own Dave Thier is also there, and will be reporting in with his own account shortly. The friend I’ve sent to attend was using a regular pass I purchased, not a press pass, and as such he had to wait over three hours in line just to get into Grant Park, and just got in at 1 PM local time, well past the point when the event was supposed to have started inside. Organization for getting people with scannable wristbands inside does not seem to be remotely efficient, despite the fact that there are concerts all over this area normally without similar issues. Update: Bret tells me that Niantic is issuing refunds and giving out $100 in Pokecoins to attendees. A nice gesture but again, many people probably paid hundreds or thousands of dollars to attend this event if traveling from out of the state or country. Update 2: Bret: "There is a 20 minute line to leave." I'm sorry but I'm almost crying laughing at that one. Condolences to attendees, truly. This is turning into the Fyre Festival of the gaming world. Update 3: Hearing rumblings that Niantic may be extending Grant Park-specific stuff out into the city itself, given that it could help with network congestion. Given that the event has been refunded, that could work, but anyone who paid big bucks for aftermarket tickets will be out of luck if aspects of the event open up to non-attendees.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2017/07/22/pokemon-go-fest-plagued-by-mile-long-lines-and-connectivity-issues-in-chicago/#77b40454539a two of my friends went and from what they told me it really was a nightmare. one of them suffers from chronic pain and they made her throw the over-the-counter painkillers she brought into the garbage. i feel bad for anyone who had to bring prescription medication.
TIL there are people still playing Pokemon Go a year later
TIL there are people still playing Pokemon Go a year later
Here in India, I still see people religiously playing it on the bus I take to work. It's hilarious, because of the shitty traffic, the bus doesn't seem to go fast enough to set the whole passenger mode thing off, so it's as good as walking and these people keep playing. I tried to play the game, but it runs like ass on my phone so I abandoned it.
Pokemon GO [del]Fest[/del] is a complete disaster
fixed that title for you
Niantic really are just completely incompetent I'm still amazed a year later that they somehow managed to shit up the biggest game on the planet, they hit the mobile game jackpot and managed to do less than nothing until it was basically dead Kinda impressive how they wasted that opportunity
They had insane momentum that that could have kept but they pretty much killed it go figure
It's incredible how Niantic keeps dropping the ball. Wonder how hard Nintendo regrets Pokémon Go.
It's incredible how Niantic keeps dropping the ball. Wonder how hard Nintendo regrets Pokémon Go.
probably not too much, it brought a shitload of attention to the brand again and the pokemon games released later in the year became one of their best-selling titles ever as a result
As many speculated at the end of last year, a large part of Sun and Moon success is down to the mobile hit Pokémon Go, Nintendo has confirmed: "The release of the smart device application Pokémon GO led to increased sales of software in the Pokémon series released in the past and drove Nintendo 3DS family hardware sales growth, particularly outside of Japan," the report reads.
yeh and it's not like they had to do much work for how much money they got out of it
Least they didn't throw a ballpit in the middle of the crowd as a make up gesture

Can't trust Niantic on game development.
They couldn't scale Ingress to match the pokemon userbase. Ingress had many events around the world, and a lot of them went off without a hitch, I have not been made aware to any considerable failures. But well, Pokemon Go peaked right at it's month, which even such felt unfinished This game is wasted potential with bad business and development decisions
I wonder what Nintendo thinks of these Niantic clowns ruining their Pokemon brand with bad press.

I don't think I've ever seen a company with a golden product trying so goddamn hard to bankrupt themselves, and trying their hardest to piss everyone off while doing so It's almost like they made a list of "what could go wrong" and made that the official modus operandi
I wonder what Nintendo thinks of these Niantic clowns ruining their Pokemon brand with bad press.
it's not Nintendos brand though
There's a guy at work who went to this. I'm curious to hear his take on it tomorrow. Pokemon Go in general was such a huge missed opportunity. They had the premise of a lifetime and just fumbled it super hard. I loved it for the first couple weeks but they've done a really bad job of supporting it. Fire Emblem Heroes has been an excellent counter-point to it in terms of support. I'm amazed at how much effort IS is putting into that game with constant new content, new game modes, gameplay additions/tweaks, and so on.
fixed that title for you
I don't get it? Facepunch is literally the only place I hear this. I otherwise would think it was a successful hit.
I don't get it? Facepunch is literally the only place I hear this. I otherwise would think it was a successful hit.
Of course, there is no denying that it gained a lot of popularity, but only at first. I am only talking about what it has turned into, like Why485 just said above you.
I don't get it? Facepunch is literally the only place I hear this. I otherwise would think it was a successful hit.
It is a big success. Only the hardcore crowd complains about it religiously. But they do have a point. More people, myself included, would probably play it if it had been better taken care of.
TIL there are people still playing Pokemon Go a year later
You laugh, but the massive crowds for this event demonstrates that, despite the bastardized aspects of the gameplay and whatnot, Pokemon GO still has a lot of staying power. While personally I haven't gotten into it since it both looks like arse and doesn't look like my kind of game (despite me enjoying Gen 1 and Gen 2 as a kid), there are still a fair few people in my town who are still seen to play it. Hell, a few weeks ago I saw one of my coworkers playing on her break. Not as much as she did when it first came out, but it's still around, and there are still a lot of people playing it.

So there's a lot of people who grew up watching Ash and Pikachu on TV that were thrilled to play the new game and don't really care that sucks - it's a game, it has pokemon in it, end of story. Plus, since the gyms and the pokestops all seem to center around cultural items, literally ever 100 meters there's some small temple or roundabout or something to harvest pokeballs and potions and the like :v: Also, fun and amusing fact: One of my childhood best friends and classmate is the person who does the Hindi voice for Ash Ketchum. :v: He sometimes does this for kids when we go out for drinks and he's in town - it's fucking hilarious to see the penny drop.
I went to GO Fest. The connection issues were as bad as they say, the game was literally unplayable in the park. The problem was threefold: The local cell data service got completely overwhelmed for every provider (though T-Mobile players had it a little better), Niantic's authentication servers buckled so logins were a crapshoot, and the game kept crashing due to the overwhelming amount of data fetch problems. However, I honestly left satisfied. Niantic not only refunded all tickets and promised big in-game gifts to compensate, but they smartly expanded the radius of the special event spawns to two miles outside the park and extended them through Sunday. So everyone could leave, get to a place where they can actually get cell service, and continue enjoying the event. They popped legendary raids all over the entire city shortly after the Grant Park event concluded, and the real fun began with hundreds of people running around the city playing the game. They totally fucked this event up and I walked around a muddy park getting sunburnt for basically nothing, but they put the right bandage on the situation and made it right by the players. It's leagues better than a ball pit, that's for sure. :v:

Having in-game hotspots sit upon places of such great cultural significance, and with such density.
it's not Nintendos brand though
The trademark is soleley owned by Nintendo but the brand itself is managed by The Pokemon Company, which is managed by 3 different corporations: Game Freak, Creatures, and also Nintendo. So yes, it is Nintendo's brand.

This sounds like a Broteam video. [editline]23rd July 2017[/editline]
People paying thousands for tickets? I swear, it's gullible people who will pay $1000+ for a $20 face value ticket that keep these scammers and scalpers going!
see i don't think niantic ever had to maintain the momentum of pokemon go. they made an amazing product that had a legitimately unprecedented effect on society. that alone is always going to be bigger than pokemon go the game ever will be. all they had to do was maintain a good name for the product. make a serviceable game, keep the servers healthy and the players happy. the playerbase was always going to thin out eventually anyway. but they couldn't even do that. from what i've heard about their game development recently, they botched the game at nearly every opportunity. i can't be too hard on them, it surely must've been difficult to support a game that large, but jeez how hard was it to add in new pokemon? did it really need to take a whole year?
