Edit: the interview's out! Grey Newell, Gabe's son has done a stream and an interview with Valve News Network about his upcoming game Fury. Stream VOD 1 and 2. Grey's youtube channel (Interview will be added when it's uploaded) While questions about Fury were saved for the interview, Grey had a trove of interesting info -Fury will be on Steam -Gabe met Satoru Iwata for a Valve/Nintendo partnership around the Wii era that fell through. -Grey and Gabe have breakfasts at ihop where they talk science, Gabe gets chicken noodle soup. -Grey played Super Mario Galaxy with Shigeru Miyamoto in Japan. -Gabe only plays Dota 2, only against bots (also Gabe himself has said he plays multiplayer with people) -Grey uses the Steam Metro skin, thinks the default is awful and has tried to get Valve to improve it for two years -All Valve employees, family and friends can get all Steam games for free -Bill Gates had dinner with the Newells once -Grey said the problem with Valve's structure is "no one knows anthing". He had an anecdote, he went to Valve once and asked devs about Source 2, devs kept saying "talk to this guy" until they went in circles. Here's Gabe at ihop (Grey must have gave permission to show this on stream) [t]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/334168178181668866/406989012914667523/image.jpg[/t]
I don't mean to shit on Gabe but Grey is the most uninspired name that I can think of to call your son [editline]28th January 2018[/editline] Might as well call him "unwanted"
It's probably a family tradition. I bet Gabe is married to a woman named, "Gale."
Lisa but they have a second child, which would be interesting to know name of for tradition
-Gabe only plays Dota 2, only against bots
Longing for those old single player story days?
"What's a single-player?" - Valve (hopefully Fury is singleplayer)
Technically, the Portal 2 part of The Lab was single player.
Lisa but they have a second child, which would be interesting to know name of for tradition
As with all aspects of life, Gabe just never got around having that promised third child.
Some more info. -Skrillex went to Valve and was very excited, and Grey met Deadmau5 at one of the Internationals -Grey expects HL3 to be brought up when talking to new people -Valve does take internships, but rarely (a member of Grey's team, a TF2 contributor named Ben. interned at Valve) -Grey doesn't keep up with the Gaben memes
Greyben
Lisa but they have a second child, which would be interesting to know name of for tradition
better be a four letter name now that I think about it
to be honest my heart jumped when I saw "Gabe Newell's son..." on the front page. Thought something bad happened :c
The OP says Grey, but his youtube says Gray.
What kind of psychopath eats chicken noodle soup for breakfast?
to be honest my heart jumped when I saw "Gabe Newell's son..." on the front page. Thought something bad happened :c
When Gabe, Marc Laidlaw, or any of the Valve people pass I'll be really sad. Even though they're not doing so hot right now, I'll always appreciate Valve, from showing that FPS games could have a real story in the Half-Life series, to the pure fun and beautiful style of Team Fortress, to the masterpieces of the Portal series, to bringing digital gaming to the world with Steam, even for creating the leaders of esports, CSGO and Dota 2 That aside, here's some more tidbits -Grey played Dota 2 for 2000 hours, but quit because it made him want to die -Grey met Paul McCartney at a party -Grey's lead programmer collects every mountain dew can he drinks -Grey was asked who the nicest Valve dev was, he said he liked Zoid, but didn't know he left Valve :frown: -Grey has played a lot of Valve prototypes, but not F-Stop
What kind of psychopath eats chicken noodle soup for breakfast?
A man that can do whatever he wants.
What kind of psychopath eats chicken noodle soup for breakfast?
this kind
Greyben
Coincidentally, Gray had another person working on Fury named Ben on the stream [editline]27th January 2018[/editline]
this kind
Gabe probably feels really bad about the HL3 situation, I'd imagine even Gabe couldn't get a solid team to make it at this point.
No Gabe absolutely could but why the fuck would he want to when he pretty much has 4 money printers going off in their offices for him to even entertain that idea of making another game albeit HL3. There are people, right now who are trying to make a game from Marc Laidlaws Epistle 3 post, so don't tell me he can't smash together a solid team
-Grey uses the Steam Metro skin, thinks the default is awful and has tried to get Valve to improve it for two years -Grey said the problem with Valve's structure is "no one knows anthing". I already like some of his opinions, sounds like he'd make a change on how Valve currently works (which is much needed).

I'm gonna be honest I didn't even know he had kids
I mean get the current Valve devs to stop what they're working on, which would piss of the cabal bosses, which combined probably rival Gabe in internal power at the company.
Your acting like Valve is run by mafia crime gangs and has cliques set up throughout the office that some areas are so volatile to go through, you need body armour
a valve/nintendo partnership would've been an interesting development
What kind of psychopath eats chicken noodle soup for breakfast?
Considering Gabe's been losing a lot of weight in more recent years, I wouldn't judge him for that if it means he's a little bit healthier
Your acting like Valve is run by mafia crime gangs and has cliques set up throughout the office that some areas are so volatile to go through, you need body armour
it's pretty well known that valve's corporate structure has led to the creation of high school-esque cliques throughout the company and that despite the supposed flat management thing, older people who perceive newer hires as "working too hard" (and thus making the older perhaps less motivated employees look bad) will use either attempt to get the new employee fired or make their life so miserable via social ostracization that they just leave
Your acting like Valve is run by mafia crime gangs and has cliques set up throughout the office that some areas are so volatile to go through, you need body armour
Obviously less extreme but ex employees have said the company is run like a high school, various people get in control of the teams, amass power and influence, and a small amount of people at the company (probably Gabe included) control the hiring and firing process. So there actually might be a culture of fear at Valve, does a dev risk getting fired by starting the HL3 team up again, or does he keep quiet and work on CSGO or Dota 2. edit: So what interests the cabal leaders, even stuff that doens't make much money compared to their big projects, like the Steam Controller or VR is what gets worked on. Such a shame, we got so many good games from Valve's working style, but it's been corrupted by the cabals and their leaders
I didn't know about that, that's a pretty toxic environment holy shit
A new hope.
I didn't know about that, that's a pretty toxic environment holy shit
the result of no real boss to answer to, no mediation, no hierarchy, no one to seek redress or action from.
It seems in removing all power structures people naturally pushed towards leadership positions have taken advantage of that.
but without the accountability of a real management system
