In addition to the recently-announced Splatoon 2 Switch bundle, Nintendo is now offering an actual empty box for preorder in Japan. The box comes adorned with Splatoon 2 art, and it can be yours for the low, low price of ¥540 (approximately $5). It's the exact same box the bundle comes packaged in, except it contains neither Splatoon 2 nor a Switch console.
The company says the ¥540 (approximately $5) item is "recommended for Splatoon fans who already have Nintendo Switch." It is not currently listed for sale on the US, UK, or Australian Nintendo Stores.
That's not the only strange Splatoon 2 package you can buy, however. In a separate listing on Nintendo's official Japanese store, the company is also selling a boxed edition of the shooter that doesn't come with a game cartridge. Instead, you'll get a plastic box containing a paper download code.
I don't know what to say. On one hand, who the hell would buy an empty box with a design for it? On the other hand, it's super cheap and it would be interesting to see just how many people buy it.
I guess for people who want to put their Switch and the physical version of the game into it?
So when do they run out of supplies and people have finished scalping the last of them
**MINT CONDITION** Splatoon 2 + Nintendo Switch Bundle Box - $700 on eBay.
if it doesn't hurt anyone and dumbasses will buy them then you are an idiot for not providing the product and generating profit.
these are sold to game shops iirc and could honestly also be used for people selling their console later on. it's not necessarily uncommon to buy a used game or console in japan in the box with everything intact.
It also serves as a cool-looking and cheap bed for cats.
They also sell copies of Splatoon 2 in Japan in a box that only has a download code in it. It's weird.

That's not too weird considering a lot of PC games have been a Steam key in a DVD case for years now.

I still find that weird now :v:
I guess I'm just too used to Nintendo consoles having the actual game on the disc/cartridge and only needing updates at times.

...i would totally do that. i love the box art of some games and i keep all of my boxes around for my major purchases (game consoles, laptops, cameras, etc.)

I would say it's not too uncommon for people to collect box designs they really like. I know of plenty of people who keep the boxes for their onaholes simply because they like the design.
It's really not unheard of - I sold my Mario Kart 8 Wii U Bundle box for £10 on eBay last year. There's even a niche market for game standees and posters. People just like to collect these kinds of things.

Tbh I hope that doesn't become too universal but sadly it might

Hey man, it was the best example I could think of. Alternatively I know that one of my friends keeps the boxes for their figurines simply because they like the box art (that and the fig costed them 200$)
besides you havent lived until you've seen the obnoxious box designs the japanese make.

You need some new friends..

At least for portable consoles, I think it's a nice option. You still get the nice box and stuff, but don't have to deal with carrying tons of cartridges with you when actually using it on the go.

200$ is a bit much for most figures, but I've definitely seen high quality diecast metal figures or large character statuettes sell for that amount or even more, plus if they're not living in Asia the cost of the hobby overall is usually higher because of shipping. There's a rationale behind the steep prices, and when he says "figurines" he's not talking about shitty G.I. Joe equivalents.
I would buy one, fill it with socks and give it to someone I hate for christmas.

I generally keep the boxes for a lot of my figures too actually, both because I like the design of the packaging and also it makes it easier in the event I need to transport them. There's also the issue of a lot of Japanese figures on the more affordable end coming with a lot of swappable parts, so keeping them in the box makes it easy to get the ones I want.

the thing is, that it's better, but also kinda bad, because you are forced to rely on a connection to get it, and if it becomes overly universal and you can't get physical copies at all then you're pretty much fucked without one. Without physical copies, archiving slowly becomes more and more impossible.

I don't know where you're trying to go with this post.
Are they suddenly a bad friend for collecting merchandise?

They are interested in something that I am not interested in, therefore they're an objectively awful and stupid person. That's just the way the world works, it's a terrible burden for people who aren't me.
Well Gamestop changed the Switch bundle again to one that had MK8D, Wheel gimmicks, And a Joycon charge dock for 400. That a he'll of a lot better then the last so I picked it up.
Plus it had the Neon Joycons which is always great.
They sell preorder steelbooks of games in germany of 5€. They are empty.
That way you secure your preorder, get a steelbook AND you get the 5€ back when you buy the actual game once it's released.

That's definitely true. Ideally, buying a game would give you the physical copy and add the right to download it from the platforn's online service to your account for the best of both worlds, but I'm sure we can agree that most big publishers would have a fit over "selling two copies for the price of one!!!".
I used to keep boxes because apparently should I ever decided to sell me things later on having the original box magically pumps up its resale value.
Over time I started appreciating box art and started keeping them on the basis of "it looks nice" and soon enough it evolved into me literally collecting boxes with nice design/artwork. Most of the time its free though, as in my friend gave it to me or I found it by a dumpster. I mean its literally no different to collecting bottle caps, stamps and (to some extent) action figures, they just sit there and do nothing but look nice. You can buy rare stamps that you can't get, same goes for bottle caps, the only difference in this is that its being sold by the manufacturer themselves rather than someone else who bought a Switch.
I would totally not mind unironically buying this if its available here.
