Japanese car parts maker Takata has filed for bankruptcy protection in the US and Japan.
It is facing billions of dollars in liabilities over its defective airbags, which have been linked to at least 17 deaths worldwide.
Some of the airbags contained faulty inflators which expanded with too much force, spraying metal shrapnel.
US-based Key Safety Systems (KSS) has bought all of Takata's assets, apart from those relating to the airbags.
The $1.6bn (£1.3bn) deal was announced after the Japanese firm filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US, with similar action taken in Japan.
When the product you make continually fails and kills people, and do nothing about it, you deserve anything that comes your way.
Seems like they should also be charged with criminal negligence or something as well
My car has one of those airbags. I have to get them replaced soon but I'll do it when I have more freetime. I just have to make sure not to get crashed into
it's one thing to have faulty airbags that fail to function properly and another to have airbags that actively try to kill you
kinda defeats the point
my airbags are 20 years old and probably don't even work
Its a shame this has to happen. Takata Makes shit other than airbags (Racing Harnesses, Seats, Seatbelts and even child seats). But their negligence bit them in the ass.
My 1982 Mustang GT had no safety features besides the seat belt. I'll take that over an exploding jugular destroyer.
As a motorsport fan I wonder what will happen to Takata's presence in the sport. Their harnesses are wonderful and they've been a big name for many years, it'd be a shame to see those products completely disappear.

it shouldn't be too bad, another company has bought pretty much all assets not related to their airbags, so that stuff should hang around I'd think

Tbh I’d buy a ton of them now if they do disappear

They should cough up the money for you.

Dude, I'd get those replaced ASAP.
oh hey my car had their shitty airbags before i got them replaced, good riddance.

There really is no ASAP.
The wait list for most manufacturers is nearly a year long.
If you outfit your car with a bit of cage and Takata harnesses, you don't need airbags :V
My passenger side airbag had to be recalled because of this, but not my driver side. Seems odd they would source 2 different airbags for the same function in the same car.

Nissan was on point getting the recall done, had an appointment in less than a week, car was in and out of their bay in just over and hour and a half. If the wait times are really that long I suspect other manufacturers might have been more widely affected and are struggling to get replacement airbags or their service centers are overwhelmed with routine work.

It's free because it's a safety recall. I just don't have the time to spare on it because I have a test to study for this week and another next week. I'll take it to the honda dealership once I finish my final next week
It's really amazing, the number of faulty airbags that may be out on roads waiting to chop people up.
Check out this timeline. At the bottom it shows just how many vehicles from each manufacturer have been recalled in the US alone. It's crazy.

Approximately 42 million vehicles are potentially affected in the United States, and at least 7 million have been recalled worldwide.
Wow, that is a lot. Surprised none of our 6 vehicles are on it.
Mine has one, and it's been on the waitlist for at least a year.
Make sure you go to a good dealer or shop to get it fixed. I took my RX-8 for the recall and then got T-boned a few months later and one airbag deployed, on the wrong side of the car :v:
