Reality TV show drops people into the wild for a year, doesn't tell them show is canceled

After a year spent in the isolation of the Scottish wilderness, the contestants of Channel 4’s Eden have returned to civilization, where they’ve been greeted by a few surprises. For starters, their country voted to leave the European Union and Donald Trump became president of the United States. But most relevant to them is the fact that the reality show they spent a year filming was pulled after only four episodes aired.
Filming for Eden began in March 2016, when 23 strangers were placed in a remote, walled-off estate in the Scottish Highlands and tasked with building a society from scratch. Tending livestock, growing food, and determining laws were all part of the experience.
Eden cast itself as a grand social experiment and tried to make the community at the center of the series as unmediated as possible. Unfortunately, problems cropped up quickly. In September 2016, Scottish newspaper The Press and Journal reported that eight of the 23 original contestants had left the show. The first to leave, Tara Zieleman, reportedly faced some criticism from fellow cast members, but one of her biggest critics departed not long after.

if i were them id go back to the wild
The newspaper reported “hunger, tiredness, and boredom” among the main reasons contestants gave up, along with “sexual jealousy” and a general disillusionment with the concept of the show.
Awkward.
Pretty soon we won't have to have a reality show to experience all that!
I'm reminded of the story of the Lykov family; it's kinda like this, only much, much more extreme.
From what I understand the Lykov family retreated into the Siberian wilderness to escape religious persecution and stayed hidden and isolated out there in the wilderness for almost 50 years. Some scientists eventually found them by accident while flying around in a helicopter; they'd been living in medieval-era conditions and they were shocked to learn about all that had happened in the outside world since then, including the entirety of World War II, which they'd lived completely unaware of. It's a really fascinating story.

The show was boring. Most of them didn't take the project seriously, it was just a bunch of twats camping in the woods.
I always wondered what happened to the show, it really did just drop off the map

I remember catching ten minutes of it when I went around to visit my mum.
All that happened in that space of time:
Some middle aged guy who took the whole thing quite seriously went off into the woods to build a shelter and cook himself some food. Then a group of teenagers walked into his camp while he was out, kicked his stuff down and ate his food, stood around and waited for him to get back so they could wind him up about it.
They forgot to feed the chickens and they all died.
I changed the channel.
A similar thing that almost certainly inspired this Eden series (was also a lot better)

The show wasn't cancelled, it was just pulled from TV broadcast, and the producers hope to air the completed show in some form this year. I don't know why the opening to the article implies that it was cancelled altogether and nobody told the contestants, because it then explains the whole situation a few paragraphs later.

Damn, I feel bad for the guy who took it seriously then.

And here's a further interview with one of the participants by Youtuber Lindybeige:

A very fascinating experience to hear stories about. Wonder why Eden fell through, bad participants?

Oh, I've long since watched that Lloyd "Lindybeige" Interview with John Rossetti, fascinating stuff, but we're getting sidetracked to the thread itself.

Because I think it's unfair to criticise without watching it, I've been watching the first episode of Eden so far, currently about 45 minutes in, it's basically watching a bunch of big children in their early twenties having a camping holiday. Their first camp is in a giant wind funnel that is giving them 90 mile an hour winds, everyone who is qualified to actually do anything has moved to another camp, more sheltered in the woods. Those who remain are just getting "drunk" off of a watery potato soup and trying to get their dicks wet.
[editline]Fucking Wow[/editline]
50 minutes in, they've poisoned a goat by letting her eat from the chicken feed in the toolshed.
[editline]FUCKING IDIOTS[/editline]
52 minutes, the goat is fucking dead.

That kind of sounds hilarious in a tragic kind of way. Like if 'Alive' or 'Cast Away' turned into a black comedy.

Well that's unfortunate. I kinda like the concept. On paper it sounds like it'd be a pretty good show, just seems like the contestants they picked weren't fit for the task.

Yeah, there's basically nothing worth seeing that the description of that first episode doesn't tell you. The participants are, as with any "reality" tv series, deliberately picked to cause conflict with "different personalities" (AKA, including a lot of loudmouth high-ego youths)

Sexual jealousy?
i still believe this type-of-shit has excellent potential for views if managed safely, efficiently, and precisely.
you can't expect to throw humans in a jungle and have it be entertaining. as a studio director of this kind of show you need to act as sort of a roleplay God.
Create situations that would entail watchable events and entertaining occurrences will erupt.
Having humans stand together on an island with very-evident cameraman watching every-move, will cause the show to grow extremely stale.
Shit like "Sexual Jealousy" will overcome the pertinent challenges you want to convey in survival and community.
that being said, i believe i could direct a FP style thing.
I remember parts of this show and one of them went basically like this.
narrator: "The team's first task when surviving the harsh wilds should be securing a continuous food supply and therefore should already be planting food ready for winter."
group: "lets build a small as shit little home the most difficult way possible using all our resources."
"Should we also build it on the BEACH so that this flimsy as fuck building will be subject to ∞mph Scottish winds?"
"absolutely and after that we can focus on building a hot water shower and mining out a fucking rock so we can have a main cooking area."
Sexual jealousy?
Yes, fucking is one of the few activities available when living out in the wilderness.
Update as I follow it, the fourth and "final" episode, still early in the spring, they still have no food supply apart from a few lucky fish and the shed full of potatoes they started with.
It might be interesting if they ever release later episodes, but these early four episodes, barely worth watching as all the interaction seems to be "these people aren't putting in their all" and "You upset the girl I have a crush on! Cunt!"
A sad turn of events, as one of their ewes was found trapped and drowned in a bog.

3,000-10,000 years ago humans were masters of the planet; jack of all trades people. today 2017, we struggle with basic agriculture, carpentry, and otherwise useful cognitive skills needed for the wild when singled out like sheep.
edit:
Also, LOL @ the Spring Episode; the description is totally like " ONE OF THE MALES MAKES ATTEMPT ON FEMALE - SHIT GETS REAL ON THIS EPISODE HIDE YO KIDS. - "
shameful production. shame.

You're taking the whole of the population of a time when you weren't around and we as a academic whole have only the barest of hints about, and comparing them to a vey tiny pack of chucklefucks who have never needed to know things about farming, animal husbandry, pottery, or such alike but have had an education of a level that far exceeded the level of even the most opulant of medieval nobility in mathematics, sciences, history, literature, literacy, geography, and philosophy. If anyone is ignorant here, it's you for thinking that's a fair assessment of the modern world or the past.

i don't find it fair that any statement i make on the forums i have someone taking it WAY TOO SERIOUSLY, like to the point of personal offense.
on-topic discussion is literally the collapse and failure of a reality TV show, the absurdity of the guests and production. WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY HERE? That I'm offending you with my ignorance? I'm making a laugh about a laughable incident, for heaven's hell man!
I clearly constructed it as a joke.
shameful production. shame.
It's Channel 4, they don't know the definition of "shame". Their entire MO is "find some niche group nobody really likes but wont admit it publicly and make a 'reality show' about them" or "pick up a bunch of barely functioning human beings and force them to live together while we record it for profit".

I'm struggling to see what part of your post at all indicated that it was made in jest, other than it being totally wrong. Many, many people aren't joking when they're wrong so I don't know why I should have thought you weren't one of them.
