• Devolver claims ESA meddling after losing $100k on rented E3 lot
Devolver Digital lost $100,000 after the City of Los Angeles prevented it from using a parking lot it had rented to expand its E3 presence. According to a report from Polygon, Devolver had rented the lot to expand its usual presence at E3; not on the show-floor, but the parking lot of a nearby branch of Hooters, where it showcases its games and hands out free beer and food in a more relaxed environment than the one inside the convention centre. This year, the plan was to double its presence by renting the adjacent parking lot - a space owned by the City of Los Angeles, unlike its usual, privately-owned space. The lot is also normally rented by E3, but this year Devolver got there first. However, Polygon reports that City officials were unaware of the nature of Devolver's plans for the site, and ultimately denied it the necessary permits to use it for anything other than parking. Mike Wilson, co-founder of Devolver, has accused the ESA of being involved in the denied permits. "E3 does not like us being here," he said. "We've always had a long-standing love-hate relationship. But not in a fuck-with-us kinda way, until this year. They just started making trouble for us with the City, saying, 'How dare you rent this space out to these renegades, blah, blah, blah.' "Obviously, they have a lot of sway with the city. Phone calls were made and threats. We were being bullied." Devolver is not a member of the ESA, and its E3 presence is entirely unofficial. However, it has flatly denied Wilson's claims, with a "senior ESA staff member" saying, "we've got better things to do than worry about Devolver."
gameindustry.biz
We're definitely totally not worried about everyone moving their conferences outside of E3, no sir.
E3 isn't quite open to the public yet, seems like if ESA is behind it, its because they don't want to loose control of the area around the convention.
I thought they sold public passes this year?
15k passes. The thing is this was on top of normal attendance, which meant this years E3 was excessively crowded. Lines for games were being closed for the DAY literal minutes after the floor opening
How did they lose the 100k? And where do people park their cars for E3?
How did they lose the 100k? And where do people park their cars for E3?
parking in la is a huge pain in the fuckin' ass so probably mostly walkers from a few blocks over and hotel shuttles from however far away
How did they lose the 100k? And where do people park their cars for E3?
They probably rented the lot for 100k and then weren't allowed to do anything with it.
Surely there would be a rental contract drawn up for something like this which would also define the allowed use of the car park.
Surely there would be a rental contract drawn up for something like this which would also define the allowed use of the car park.
Yeah, I don't doubt ESA is a bunch of old money fuckfaces who want to hold onto their power over the convention tooth and nail but if you contract something and don't actually specify what you wanna do with it in the contract (which happens to not be the primary purpose of what you are renting at all) then you can't really complain when it doesn't take much effort to screw you over.
this is an ongoing conflict between devolver and the ESA
Never would've expected that from the European Space Agency.
http://www.theesa.com
Really shows how up to date they are with their PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers

Per lifetime.

There's no video game in the world that makes up for a 3 hour wait for 10 minutes of playtime
They probably rented the lot for 100k and then weren't allowed to do anything with it.
Probably that plus whatever stuff they bought that they were intending to use on the lot.

I was at E3, and it was a total mess. Just wayyyy to many people.
