Superheroes have always been about doing the right thing in the hardest of circumstances. Now Zack Snyder, one of the biggest filmmakers in the genre and the director of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the upcoming Justice League, finds himself in just such a situation.
Snyder tells The Hollywood Reporter he is stepping away from Justice League, Warner Bros.’ all-star DC Comics superhero mega-movie that is in post-production, in order to deal with the sudden death of his daughter. Snyder's wife, Deborah Snyder, who is a producer on Justice League, also is taking a break to focus on the healing of their family.
Stepping in to shepherd the movie through post and the shooting of some additional scenes will be Joss Whedon, the Avengers filmmaker and creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With Whedon's help, the movie is still on track for its Nov. 17 release date.
Snyder’s daughter, Autumn Snyder, died by suicide in March at age 20. Her death has been kept private, with only a small inner circle aware of what happened, even as the movie was put on a two-week break for the Snyders to deal with the immediate effects of the tragedy. Zack Snyder says he initially was eager to return to the film, which stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller.

“Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public,” he says. “I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth it…I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.”
pretty awful situation
I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Poor dude.
oh shit that's terrible
Even with the movies being a real mess, this is still pretty sad to see.
Get well soon, Snyder..
Whatever you think of the man's movies, you need to realise he's a human being going through an awful tragedy. The fact some are trying to use this as a way to attack him is fucking awful.
This is worse than i could imagine. Sorry to hear that.
I told my sister, an avid Marvel movies fan, about the director switch and she cheered at the top of her lungs before I could finish. Then I told her why and she felt like complete shit. No matter how incompetent someone is at their job, that doesn't mean problems like this should be shrugged off as "sucks for them," that's for sure.
Nobody deserves this. I hope Zack and his wife can heal quickly and well.
some people who hate snyder/his movies are already using this as a way to attack him, absolutely disgusting.
poor guy.
A man making poor artistic choices shouldn't be ridiculed for them in the wake of his daughters suicide wf

I never understood how people could be so horrible. I bet those sacks of shit live sad, miserable lives. Zack deserves support and love, not hate and ridicule.
I'm glad he's no longer doing them but jesus the reason why is devastating. Nobody deserves to have that happen to them. No parent should ever have to bury their own child.

Shitheads being shitheads. Not much can be done with Justice League since it's in post anyway, unless Geoff Johns seizes total control for executive producer.

Pretty easily, actually. Just don't give a shit about something that doesn't affect you. Places like 4ch and 8chan exist precisely because this is what people actually think, they just don't have the balls to own it in public.
Shit. No one should have to go through something like that. I can't imagine what he's going through.
On the topic of the movie, I wish they would have gotten someone other than Joss Whedon. He's really not a good writer for anything other than snippy one-liners.

Fuck them really
Kind of wonder how they got Joss Whedon given his connection to Marvel and The Avenger movies, like you'd think Marvel would have it's claws in him.
One hack of a director steps down for another hack to take his place.
It seriously sucks what happened to his daughter though. Cant imagine anything worse than a parent having to bury their child.

Whedon is making the Batgirl movie, so it makes sense for him to be available to step in like this
Holy shit, this fucking sucks. I'm very critical of Snyder's DC movies, but I wish him and his wife well.
How awful. I hope they both manage to find some peace later on. :( What an awful turn of events for him, indeed.
Say what you will about his movies, but nobody deserves to go through the hell the Synder family is going through. I wish them the best. Poor guy.
Parents should never have to bury their children
Say what you want about his films and directing.
But don't bring his daughter's death into it, that's just disgusting.
I know people who have had to go through similar events with both parents and children ending themselves, its never a nice experience and I wish them the best, its not something you ever fully recover from.
I'm not sorry to see him leave the project, but the reason why makes me feel like an absolute dick for feeling as such.
Terrible, terrible thing to go through for any family, and my sentiments go out to him and his wife.
I'll commend him for taking just two weeks off, considering he's also got to deal with the stress of working on such a huge production like Justice League.
The silver lining to this situation is that JL's now in post production. He can afford to leave it for a while without it impacting too much. Dude's gonna need it.
Nobody deserves this. I hope Zack and his wife can heal quickly and well.
You can heal from many things, but burying your child is not one of them, I imagine. This is pretty much the worst thing that can happen to loving parents. Especially a 20 year old girl, fuck....
And from what i just gathered, his departure from JL means jackshit at this stage of production, so no winners here.

Or how people are basically celebrating his departure in spite of this. I mean I know a lot of people wanted him off the DC films but jfc not like this.
I can respect the determination it must have taken him to keep working this long after that happened. I dont believe for a second Id be able to the same without more than two weeks to at least come to terms enough to work.
Maybe I dont like his films, but no one should have to deal with this and I honestly hope he and his family come to terms with it, and they continue to live their lives. I honestly hope he recovers and continues making movies even if I dont like a single one of them.

The movie is out in November, I doubt there is much Joss can really do to change it.
