Is Alien 5 still happening? Neill Blomkamp, the filmmaker who made ripples in the Alien fandom years ago when he unveiled secret concept art for his all but shelved Alien 5 project has once again stirred up excitement and enthusiasm by cryptically releasing two new pieces of Alien 5 concept art through his personal Instagram account. The two new pieces showcase a soldier's perspective facing a terrifying Xenomorph in an air shaft and the second piece is of a USCM Dropship - identical to the ones shown in James Cameron's ALIENS, check them out:
there are rumors that the Alien covenant sequel got cancelled
"Is Alien 5 still happening? "
yes because hot on the heels of Alien Covenant vastly under-performing at the box office is clearly the most logical time to make a new Alien movie lol. I'd say the project is pretty much double dead at this point and Neill just had more concept art laying around for whatever reason that he's now dumping. shit sucks because as much of a mess as Neill's most recent films have been I still have a hard time believing it would've been any more poorly received than Covenant ended up being (and ofc I'd love a retcon of Alien 3's total 180 on the ending Aliens set up)

For those curious, the Covenant Sequel cancellation rumor that the OP is referring to:
https://movieweb.com/alien-covenant-sequel-awakening-canceled-fox/
This should be regarded as rumor for now, but someone who reportedly worked on Alien: Covenant is saying, via a forum on Blu-Ray.com, that the studio has scrapped plans for the sequel. Again, this is an unconfirmed source, so don't go too crazy, but this information is pretty telling, even though it doesn't sound like the most reliable source in the world. It's also seemed for a while like the sequel, which is said to be titled Alien: Awakening, may be in trouble anyway. Here's what the source, who goes by the screen name HumanMedia, had to say about it.
"The sequel to Covenant was originally due to start preproduction this month in Sydney. After the box office results filming was canceled, and a warehouse storage unit full of stuff was auctioned off a few months ago. So the original plan of pumping out another quickly has definitely changed with no immediate plans for anything."
lol probably bogus but it's probably gonna end up being the case anyways
keep ridley scott's claws away
vents and hangers, i'm excited to see a fresh take on the alien franchise
neill blomkamp is not a good director. he caught lightning in a bottle with D9 and i'd rather not see his take on Alien tbh. from the concept art it seems like a needless nostalgia trip.
this franchise has been so directionally confused for so long but all i want is another tightly written limited-scope horror movie about aliens. someone please free us from ridley's wild ride

He definitely shouldn't be main director, but he knows how to get a dystopian and extraterrestrial atmosphere nailed down.
But at the same time, barring D9, he sucks at the acting and plot part so that should be left to a more competent director.

I fucking hope alien 5 is still happening, and i hope they never let ridley scott touch the series again after prometheus, and especially after covenant.

He's incredibly talented, but his films get bogged down in the concept stages. District 9 had years and years of preperation in that regard, whereas Elysium, and even more noticeably, Chappie, had just a few years from concept, to finished product.
With this, he would have an already established world to work with, and would only have to worry about the story itself, and whatever characters end up in it. I'd love to see his take on it, as District 9 is one of my favourite films.

He's doing a project using Unity on YouTube right now. It's conceptually super neat to me and has some pretty visuals.

You wouldn't think series of monster movies would become this confused.
I hope this means they're bringing back the Colonial Marines. That's part of why I disliked Alien 3 and Resurrection, the other parts being they kinda sucked (REALLY sucked in Resurrection's case :v:)
As someone who grew up playing the AvP games and watching Aliens several times with my dad, I have a major fondness for the USCM
Not sure what to make of this. The old artwork looked like it had cool sci-fi concepts and the general appeal was just "sequel to Aliens with Weaver and Biehn" but in terms of Alien it looked kind of lame. Covenant was mostly poo though so I'd still give this a shot out of curiosity.
tbh Isolation is the only great Alien related thing to come out in the last decade.
You wouldn't think series of monster movies would become this confused.
They would when the studio is FOX, this was the first franchise to go off rails but it certainly wasn't the last, which is generally why if you're anyone but James Cameron you don't shop a sci fi project there.
Also doesn't help that Scott went from "take the writer's chthulhu monster universe and make it a corporate dystopia" to "welcome to the USS Daddy Issues; I'll be your host, confused existential crisis robot".

Great world building and atmosphere, shit length and width. A full third of the game is literally backtracking, doing exactly what you did the first time but then this one more thing, basically the rote definition of padding. SEGA also let go virtually everyone as soon as the game was done, so wishing for lightning in a bottle twice is pretty pointless, especially seeing as they don't have the license any more.

Oh yeaaaaah. I forgot all about that
He's a good visual director, but his plot suffers. Stuff like Elysium was really cool, but the plot just was 'meh'
Yeah I'd love to see him direct an Alien movie, I just don't want him to write it

Unity actually made the first (and at the time only) episode of ADAM themselves. They got Blomkamp's Oats Studio to turn it into a series. There are already two more episodes out, and they're pretty good.
But Blomkamp and Oats made some much cooler concept shorts that are well worth checking out.
Like Rakka (featuring a familiar face from the Alien franchise) and Zygote as samples of what Neil can do with the concept of evil aliens, or Firebase for general gory mind-fucky violence.

Now I can't help but imagine some chubby, gray-haired animal control worker putting on a welding glove to pull out an angry xenomorph.

i'd love to see Alien 5 as the adventures of a gang of aussie xenomorph removers

I'm pretty sure the USMC is back, since Blomkamp showed off the "new" Pulse Rifle for Alien 5 a while ago.

That's from 2015. Probably before they had the movie killed in favor of the New crappy Alien movies.
If you look at the original tweet from the OP he clearly says it:

In the far away future, where they have an AN/PEQ-15 made in the early 00s and a Chinese made red dot sight for their front line warriors.

Looks like an AAC muzzle device, though.
