BEIJING — A Chinese court sentenced a nanny to death on Friday for setting a fire that killed three children and their mother, in a case that has prompted a national discussion about greed, trust, inequality and neglect. The nanny, Mo Huanjing, 35, was convicted of arson for igniting her employer’s apartment in June. The authorities said Ms. Mo, who had more than $9,500 in gambling debt, had planned to start a fire and then extinguish it, hoping that the family would reward her financially for coming to their rescue. In its decision on Friday, the Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court in eastern China called Ms. Mo’s motive “despicable” and said that she had “seriously damaged public security and caused social harm.” The father of the children, Lin Shengbin, who was away on a business trip at the time of the fire, attended the sentencing on Friday. On his blog, entitled “Wife and Children in Heaven,” he praised the court’s decision. “The devil finally got punished by the law,” he wrote. “I’ve been tortured day and night for more than 200 days. Today, there is finally resolution.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/09/world/asia/china-nanny-arson.html https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/chinese-nanny-sentenced-to-death-in-tragic-hangzhou-arson-case-9944300
Well, that's shitty all around
"In a letter made public during her trial, Ms. Mo expressed remorse, saying, “If my death will make everything start over again, I’m willing to be sentenced to death.” Too bad it won't. Pointless executing her, reckless fool or not.

I can attest that most of the nannies employed by middle/upper class Chinese families are uneducated, and fairly poor. Sometimes they're basically straight up homeless, and they desperately seek employment as live-in caretakers so that the parents can go off and work and make money without worrying about their kids. Most of these nannies are good-willed, and have families of their own that they're just trying to provide for. Some, unfortunately, have terrible vices, and even worse spending habits, that land them in an extremely sticky situation. It's unfortunate that she will be put to death for her extreme ignorance, but it's understandable. The last thing she would have wanted to do was to be out of a job; in her head, she could've played the hero, gotten a financial reward, and probably gotten a raise. Somehow the risks of that(or maybe she severely overestimated her own ability, as poor people often do) greatly outweighed the risks of killing the family.
Man, I feel so bad for the husband/father.
