MAZDA France president, Phillipe Geffroy, discusses how technology is shaping cars and should be shaping car shows, how regulations could stall self-driving cars, and why there is still life in the traditional internal combustion engine even as electric and hybrid cars are starting to appeal to a wider audience.
He feels that, like the rest of the automotive industry, motor shows need to start adapting to the technological revolution that is fast taking hold of every element of our lives.
"Motor shows have to revamp their current format to offer the public not only today's vision of the cars but also a better understanding of what are the various prospects in car technologies and uses," he said.
"If not, it is likely that people will go to other shows or use digital tools to find out by themselves."
Mazda has a reputation for embracing and persevering with new technologies. For example, it's still the only car company to make a success of the rotary engine. Yet look at the company's current vehicle range and its cars can seem comparatively low-tech, especially when it comes to things like electric or hybrid power.
"There is no real pressure coming from our customers for alternative fuel vehicles. Both in the US and Europe a minority of either wealthy customers, or companies willing to play the ecological image are buying electric vehicles," Geffroy explained.
He's right, it's going to take decades for the whole globe to adapt to EVs. Better to develop the most efficient ICEs before engaging in niche (currently) electric solutions.
And make a nice sports car aswell please.

You kiddin'? They've made the best sports car for nigh on 30 years now, one that anyone can afford, that's reliable, handles great, lasts well, easy to service, fuel miserly, all that good stuff. Hell, the MX-5 is one of....at this point, maybe two or three....MY2017 cars I would happily purchase, simply because it is the best damn sports car on the market and it's properly affordable.
What the MX-5 lacks in raw goodyear-destroying brute force it makes up for by being the quintessential British sports car that actually fucking works. Icing on the cake? If you still want rear tire life to drop five percentage points every time you weld your right foot to the floor there's more ways to achieve that than there are different brands of tires to annihilate. Everything from massive turbos to LS-9 V8 swaps, hell there's probably a BEV conversion somewhere in the world. If I were to go this route with a Miata it'd probably be a mild LS-1 + T-56 manual swap, 300-odd horsepower is more than enough in a car that light.

EV sales are growing quickly year on year. This company will simply be left behind if they don't develop the technology.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but both times they found the emissions, economy were terrible and longevity was less-than-ideal with apex seals being the primary cause of engine overhauls, problems the engine type is fundamentally flawed with and will always have.

EV sales are growing, but there will always people who can't afford/don't want electric cars for a long time. Tesla is the only not garbage option for getting an EV and the Model 3 will still be far more expensive than the ICE competition and we don't even know if it will be good yet. Mazda are about to release Skyactiv 2, the first HCCI engine meaning the Mazda 3 will get 60-70 mpg from a petrol engine as early as next year.

this is a meme. miata is slow and the new ones took out a good chunk of the fun when they started using electric power steering.
people have also started asking laughable amounts of money for used first-generation cars, ones that aren't even in that great of condition. you can't just strap a "huge turbo" on them because the transmissions they come with can't take it. LS swapping them has become even more expensive than it was before with all of the hardware you need and with the price of aluminum LS engines and T56s rising so much. you'd have to rebuild the engine before you put it in then replace the whole damn drivetrain to make it work. might as well buy a C5 Z06 if you live in america, at least then you will have some semblance of stability control rather than the deathtrap that is an LS miata.
if honda brings the S660 to america with 1000cc turbo engine, I bet you miata sales with drop significantly. who the hell would buy a front engine mazda when you can get a mid-engined honda?

Man. You just haven't looked hard enough. Got a 93 (granted 1.6, but still) with 84k miles, no rust, and the original hardtop, for 2,700.
And I love it more than anything, and will definitely buy a newer Miata in the future. Fan boy for life.
I realize this is anecdotal, but I did find plenty of good condition NAs for under 3 or 4 grand in my search.

thats an extremely generous estimation. HCCI is theoretically about 30% better but that certainly will not translate to a 30% improvement in mpg. the ICE wont get too much better unless we start making them out of higher performance materials which will dramatically increase the price

I am sad.
I thought you, of all people, would have read my post and thought "yeah bring back the RX7 model!"
Just joking, but I really want a modern RX7, despite probably getting it fucked up beyong recognition.
But yeah, the MX5 is fantastic.
Is the RF good though? It looks AMAZING.
EV sales are growing quickly year on year. This company will simply be left behind if they don't develop the technology.
They didn't say they wouldn't develop it, just that it isn't a priority which is perfectly reasonable, so your post seems a little redundant. It's fair enough, especially considering Mazdas heritage with the whole wankel ordeal.
EV sales are growing quickly year on year. This company will simply be left behind if they don't develop the technology.
Mazda has had a team of engineers dedicated to the rotary non-stop even since the RX-8 was discontinued after 2011. If they can do that without having a production vehicle behind it you know they're more than likely also working on an EV just to be prepared.

Mazda drivers don't want an EV. They want a good car.
While cars get heavier and heavier with each new model, Mazda has managed to make the new MX-5 model lighter than the previous generation. It even outperforms the brz/frs/gt86
since when is the gt86 a performance car?

I think you are stuck in a time warp pal.
Every girl I know drives crossovers. I see far more dudes in MX-5s, and far more girls in Wranglers.
Nice zinger attempt coming from someone so insecure like you though.
yea theyre not fast in a straight line but go to any autox event and get a ride in one, youll see why they're so popular. i'd love to get a clean na but theyre getting hard to find..

I see absolutely no girls driving mx-5 or any convertible sports car, just crossovers and the guys drive ricers and lifted stacked diesel trucks.
tbh an mx-5 would be a welcomed sight.

I've done 110mph in mine and for a car that weighs 2300lbs, I don't know if the average owner would want to go too much faster in it.
one really annoying thing is that every mazda part costs a fortune even if its a ford part that mazda uses. i had a 6 wagon for a while and it was great for hauling stuff, it always worked when nobody else's SUV could but man when things started going everything cost a fortune to replace even though it was a ford engine

honestly i'd do anything for a new rx-7 or rx-8. easily the nicest set of cars i've laid my eyes on, and very memorable exhaust sounds.

I've had an 04 and have an 11 RX-8 and I can easily say once you get over the high maintenance factor, it's a very, very fun vehicle to throw around curves.

i make a joke and everyone gets super upset, and somehow I'm the insecure one?
I think I've only ever seen one miata driven by a woman. Women tend to drive CUVs, trucks, SUVs, and mustangs.
I would never want an EV. No sound, no gears to change, its the most boring commuter tool. Mazda's direct injection technology and lightweight cars make up for it. Plus, EV's are very harmful to the environment to produce. Those batteries are way worse than a 40mpg ICE engine over its lifetime of 25 years.
