https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/17/argentinas-navy-searches-for-missing-submarine-with-at-least-40-on-board
Argentina’s navy has launched a huge search-and-rescue operation for a military submarine with 44 crew members that has been missing off the coast of Patagonia for more than two days. The last radio contact with the San Juan submarine was on Wednesday, when it was 430km off the coast of the southern province of Chubut, in the area of San Jorge bay, a naval spokesman said on Friday.

Local media reported that contact with the San Juan was lost after a fire affected the submarine’s radio equipment.
Fire on a sub is never a good thing. Hope it's just their comms that are busted.
Fire on a sub is never a good thing. Hope it's just their comms that are busted.
If it was just the comms, you'd expect the sub to surface as quick as possible. Whatever happened, the sub better not be too far away from the coast
"A navy spokesman, Enrique Balbi, told local television that as there was no indication of problems from the submarine it could not yet be termed lost" Is fire not a problem?
Read somehere that the UK is offering help in the search
Local news says a battery line exploded and might have left it without power. I really hope they made it to the surface. Funny thing, I visited the San Juan when I was around 10 during a navy expo here in Buenos Aires, me and my brother thought it was some really cool shit. It felt like a spaceship. Hope they're ok.
Being trapped in a non-function submarine is a pretty scary thought. Hopefully, they all will be found safe quickly...
Read somehere that the UK is offering help in the search
From the source in the OP.
The governments of the US, UK and Chile have offered satellites and ships to aid in the search, according to Argentina’s foreign ministry.
The last thing we want is another Kursk disaster.
Unconfirmed news that ARA San Juan has been found by ISMERLO, 300 km off Puerto Madryn, and 70 m depth, and rescue efforts of the crew will begin shortly, or have already begun. This unconfirmed news also reaffirms a battery explosion, on the forward battery compartment, has occurred.
ISMERLO being the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office, taken from another forum, but as said in the quote, unconfirmed and no source provided thus far, although it is a spot of hope. Unfortunately, I can't say that this hasn't been coming, given the budget cuts and draw-downs in term of seatime available for actual training in the Argentine Navy over the years, submarines can be dangerous vessels if not properly maintained or utilised.
There hasn't been any confirmation on fire on the sub by the navy, though. they actually denied it.
Some good news. Local news and official twitter account say there were 7 satellite calls (don't know if they're phone calls or other means, lasting between 4 and 36 secs) believed to be coming from the sub. The navy failed to establish contact with those calls. UPDATE: Navy confirmed none of those signals came from the missing sub. (Source in Spanish) https://www.clarin.com/sociedad/submarino-ara-san-juan-llamadas-embarcacion_0_rkH9Y8eef.html CNN reports searchers heard banging noises on sonar, could be distress signals coming from the crew.
The sonar systems of two ships detected noises sounding like tools being banged against the hull of a submarine, according to a senior US Navy official familiar with the Navy's assistance in the search for the Argentine vessel.
http://edition.cnn.com/2017/11/20/americas/argentina-missing-submarine/index.html
Today is supposedly the last day for their oxygen supply and we have no clue where they are. All leads so far have been false alarms. At most, they have 3 more days to be found.

My prayers are with them and their families.
Some officials are about to give a press conference right here at work. Maybe they're about to give us something important. Nobody's telling us anything (I work on the front desk) but quite honestly there's not much hope.

Well, that sum's everything up. I'd say 99% chances they are all dead. What a shitty way to go.
any chance it could've been them firing a torpedo as a last ditch effort to be found?
They confirmed the explosion-like sound. Around here everyone believes it's all hands lost. I still don't wanna lose hope. If they died at least I hope it was quick. One thing for sure, heads are gonna roll after this.

Im no expert but maybe torpedoes cooked off in the fire.
any chance it could've been them firing a torpedo as a last ditch effort to be found?
That would be really creative though, didn't think of that. Someone with knowledge on torpedoes can confirm this is viable?
Navy confirms death of all 44 crew http://www.diariodenautica.com/noticia/21384/sucesos/la-armada-argentina-confirma-la-muerte-de-los-44-tripulantes-del-ara-san-juan.html

Rest in peace man, what a shitty way to go.
Shieeet,i hate it that the worse case scenario always happens with submarines disappearences(i.e death of the entire crew). My condolonces to the dead,i hope those responsible for the lack of maintenance of the submarines are punished.
Navy confirms death of all 44 crew http://www.diariodenautica.com/noticia/21384/sucesos/la-armada-argentina-confirma-la-muerte-de-los-44-tripulantes-del-ara-san-juan.html
That's bullshit. Navy officials haven't confirmed the death of anyone yet, they only confirmed the explosion. https://www.clarin.com/sociedad/submarino-ara-san-juan-armada-confirma-explosion_0_ByrfxE4gz.html I was present on that press release, they never said anything about people dead. Everyone's jumping the gun and claiming they're dead. They haven't found any wreckage yet. Explosion/implosion on a sub is a grim scenario and all and the chances they've survived this long are almost zero but saying they've confirmed they're gone for good it's a little irresponsible.
Complete bullshit. Nobody confirmed anything. People Just assumed so.
So today they only just admitted there was a fire onboard. What the fuck is going on.
When I get back home I’ll bring the article up, but apparently water got in through the snorkel, causing short circuts in the battery. late edit: https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-undersea-rescue-module-arriving-sub-area-argentina-194653532.html
What'll be interesting to see is if there's an investigation if they find out that faulty or unfit batteries were the cause of the incident, as that means it's entirely possible that corruption directly led to the vessel being lost in the first place.
