[QUOTE] Shares in Brazil’s major meatpackers dived on Friday as police launched a corruption probe into the industry, alleging that industry members had bribed officials to turn a blind eye to shipments of contaminated meat. São Paulo-based JBS, the world’s biggest protein company, was down 8.59 per cent to R$10.96 per share while shares in BRF, the world’s largest poultry exporter, were down 7.95 per cent to R$36.82 amid allegations that some shipments from the two companies and other smaller operators were contaminated with the bacteria salmonella. The adulterated meat was distributed within Brazil and exported to Europe. [...] The probe, in which police allege public health officials and politicians including from the ruling Brazilian Democratic Movement party received bribes from meatpackers, will raise concerns over Brazil’s meat industry, which has risen over the past decade to become one of the world’s most important. The name of the police operation, Carne Fraca, translates as “The Flesh is Weak”, to symbolise the moral fragility of the public officials who allegedly allowed themselves to be corrupted, the police said. Now, when someone asks me "where are you from" I'm gonna reply "I don't know". I'm ashamed.
Mind boggling to think that there are people who think that the market will naturally sort this kind of thing out. What a terrible thing to take a bribe for. Food poisoning has to be one of the worst ways to go, how could someone discount the importance of their post as a line of defense against outbreaks? :disappoint:
