Both the US Army and Air Force have had the same sort of branches since the 90's aswell (just with more accurate names, see [URL="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Space_and_Missile_Defense_Command"]SMDC [/URL]and [URL="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Space_Command"]AFSPC[/URL]) so that really isn't that new of an idea for the US. Reading the article in OP really does make it sound like someone was just brainstorming about how future space explorers will need military support for police actives or w/e, vs the USAF actually making a legit commitment to this idea.
