The United States Air Force may become a sort of space cop in the not-too-distant future. An off-Earth economy cannot truly take off unless moon miners and other pioneering entrepreneurs are able to operate in a safe and stable environment, said Air Force Lt. Col. Thomas Schilling, of Air University. Somebody needs to secure and protect "strategic choke points," such as lunar ice deposits and gravitationally stable spots near the moon, where spacecraft can camp out without burning fuel, Schilling added. "Fundamentally, I'd like that to be somebody with a value system that reflects the values that I share," he said. "I believe in the value of individual property rights and the rule of law." I've seen enough 80s action flicks to know that the moon and Mars always get taken over by some oppressive mining corporation.

No issue from me if it's anything like Stargate. [t]http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/stargate/images/2/28/304.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20160803072343[/t]

I don't know, U.S. Space Force sounds pretty rad as fuck. Plus to be a part of the first 1,000 people is already pretty wild. I don't understand science very well, but fuck am I glad to be alive around the time where "Space Force" may actually become a thing :v:

There's gotta be some guy in an office somewhere thinking "we can't possibly call it the 'Space Force'."

Fuck space cops, send some Colonial Marines.
When's the United Nations Security Council changing its acronym so we can get the United Nations Space Command?
How about Earth Defence Force?
United States Orbital Defense Forces
Just the Orbital Defense Force is good.
Russia beat America to having a space force by several decades, nothing new here except some bullshit is getting sensationalized because some random Lt. at a university decided to sound like the prelude to a terrible sci-fi sitcom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Space_Forces It's really just a fancy term for the stratcom and a bunch of radar and missileer divisions.
Red Faction when?
"Come on tough guy!" "Just you and me miner!"
This is already a thing lol USAF is a part of the secret space program.
he said. "I believe in the value of individual property rights and the rule of law."
ya this is exactly how dystopian novels start, putting property and rule of law over ethics, humanitarianism, and personal rights.
Pepper;52072805']How about Earth Defence Force?
Might be good to get EDF away from the English defence league tbf
Might be good to get EDF away from the English defence league tbf
i personally prefer a global defense initiative or some kind of neutral organization of defense. or acronym
Right, because there's a need to defend space miners from space dick heads because space flight is cheap and everyone can make a space crafts. SPACE.
Pepper;52072805']How about Earth Defence Force?
The E.D.F. deploys!
The E.D.F. deploys!
I don't think I've ever seen a chav-patterned spaceship.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Space_Forces It's really just a fancy term for the stratcom and a bunch of radar and missileer divisions.
Both the US Army and Air Force have had the same sort of branches since the 90's aswell (just with more accurate names, see SMDC and AFSPC) so that really isn't that new of an idea for the US. Reading the article in OP really does make it sound like someone was just brainstorming about how future space explorers will need military support for police actives or w/e, vs the USAF actually making a legit commitment to this idea.
Fuck space cops, send some Colonial Marines.
"Pack up the tea, boys! We're joining the Space Marines!" Though Space Patrol would also be an alright name for it, too.
Red Faction when?
That would mean massive civil wars in most countries as Red Faction 2.
I always liked the IF, International Fleet, from the Ender novels
screw this capitalist nonsense, the cosmos belongs to everyone! from each according to their asteroid to each according to their need. when are we getting the People's Commissariat for Cosmonautical Affairs?
Why not just have joint policing? Like they have multinational crew on the ISS.
Why not just have joint policing? Like they have multinational crew on the ISS.
no way that could go less than smoothly
