Callum Tulley was so shocked by the chaos, violence and abuse he saw as a detainee custody officer in an immigration removal centre, he decided to become a whistleblower.
Putting on hidden cameras for a BBC Panorama investigation, the 21-year-old exposes a toxic, brutal and failing environment, where self-harm and drug abuse are commonplace.
Ten staff and former staff have been suspended as a result of his allegations
Callum changes into his uniform quickly. He stops and looks in the mirror - one last check.
He’s making sure there are no wires showing.
No tell-tale signs that he has just fixed a tiny camera and microphone in place.
The 21-year-old is about to start a 13-hour shift as a detainee custody officer at Brook House Immigration Removal Centre.
Many of his shifts begin this way, rigging up in the toilets after a workout in the on-site gym.
Callum is secretly filming the chaos, violence and distress he witnesses at the centre.
Distress such as the first suicide attempt he had to deal with.
He was one of the first officers on the scene when a Ghanaian man tried to hang himself from the top floor landing.
They managed to get the ligature off the man’s neck and he survived. But it took its toll.
“I went to bed that night and didn’t sleep - then the nightmares start to happen, replays in your mind,” says Callum.
“I was signed off with a stress-related disorder for about two-and-a-half weeks. When you know you are a cog in the machine that has made him feel that level of desperation, to know the impact you’re having on the lives of these people is difficult.”

Fucking appalling, treating them as if they're less than human. A secure, stable Britain indeed - this is the UK under the likes of Cameron, May and the rest of the Conservative party.
I work for G4S just now, I'm just a lowly security steward at events/football and while they are great to work for as a student (pick your own shifts) the company are a complete joke.
It's nearly impossible to contact shift managers if there's any problems and they make you undertake a 'Level 2 stewarding course' which is the stupidest thing I've ever had to sit through. It's all online and takes bloody ages, incredibly easy though.
As someone who works for AVARN Security (formerly G4S Sweden and G4S Finland) it now makes much more sense why Sector Alarm bought the aforementioned nordic subsidiaries and forced them to split from G4S.
Honestly I expected alot more from an international company such as G4S...

G4S is a clusterfuck of a company. They offer so many security services, almost all of them end up being piss poor (their money transfer dudes are probably the most reliable from the looks of it). But I can see the appeal as a foot into the security world.
Just do your best to avoid becoming one of the power tripping dickheads they seem to employ in facilities like these, or a shitty manager who makes promises for staff numbers they can't fulfil.
Snip- you know what, I went a bit tok far.
This is just G4S mate, they're fucking shit.
Remember the Olympic games? We had to get the army to cover their fuck-up.
Not even that, remember that the man who shot up the Pulse Nightclub was employed by G4S as an armed guard. They literally employed a terrorist in the making despite their so-called screening process, and when authorities looked into it they found faults in his records.
Why the fuck does anyone still use this company, literally the last time I heard about these cunts they were abusing kids in a young offenders institute named Medway.
Not sure how bad the higher ups are, but they'll clearly hire any thug no questions asked.

It's incredibly unfair and lazy to just pin this all on the conservative party. The lack of a decent competitor is to blame for anything G4S related. They have a virtual monopoly in the market. Labour couldn't even find a decent security company that could provide the services they need to protect their conference back in 2016, so even after boycotting them they were forced to ask for their services (source).

Being from a security background I can say that G4S is a very large company with many different divisions that operate independently. They hold most nuclear site security contracts in the USA, and the guys they employ for that are top notch. On the opposite end of the spectrum is there rent a cop service, which usually consists of your Paul Blarts and the like. In the middle you have the money transfer service and to an extent the armed guys, but generally all they do for them is a basic criminal background check. Depending on the state the law doesn't require you to go any further then that, and when it comes to money transfer and down almost all security companies run the bare minimum.
But this is what you get when you only want to pay $24 an hour (to which only 10-12 the employee actually see after paying for insurance and what not) to have a "professional" stand guard over your shit.

Working in a servo, we get a fuckload of security guards who'll come through, just about all of them complain about their jobs. Ranging from long hours, to how boring it is, that the pay isn't too amazing and that a lot of the managers couldn't care about their wellbeing.
Seems like the security guard culture needs serious change

There's no real incentive for it. Security in general and unarmed security in particular is mostly security theater from what I've seen. The whole point isn't to keep things safe, it's to make people feel safe on the cheap. Pay your guards properly, and you'll be undercut by the company down the street that doesn't give a shit.
If you want real, effective security, hire some off-duty cops. Otherwise, save your money. Security jobs are, at best, stepping stones on the way to becoming a cop.
