An Indian doctor's decision to alter society's negative attitude towards girls by delivering baby girls free of charge is inspiring other doctors.
Since Dr Ganesh Rakh started his free deliveries seven years ago, his example has prompted thousands of other doctors to pledge that they too will either deliver baby girls gratis or offer a heavy discount to the parents.
It was one particularly upsetting bedside scene in his obstetrics ward that prompted Dr Rakh to take the step. A young woman had given birth to a baby girl and her parents were by her bedside, enjoying the moment. Her husband walked in and, on hearing it was a girl, fell into a rage.
"He gave her a big slap, abused her parents and told them to take her home to their house. He was wild. He said he was going to leave her and marry a woman who could give him a son," Dr Rakh said.
What a cool dude. A credit to his profession and society.
A nice thoughtful move.
A lot of female babies are born and "disappear" without being registered in India and China and various other countries where male offspring is seen as superior and more desirable due to outdated views on continuing the family name and such.

Not so much about continuing the family name in India as such, as it is about dowry which is still, sadly, prevalent.
Simply put, girl children are seen as "burdens" from the point of view of the fact that the father will need to stump up a lot of cash to give as dowry to see her married off. As a result, if a poor family has too many daughters, the father views his situation as essentially fucked and financial ruined. By reciprocity, being father of a son means you get dowry/demand it from girls, so it's also viewed as a "good thing".
Mind you, I've seen this shit play out not just in poor rural areas, but even supposedly educated "urban" families as well. It's a very sad state of affairs.
Yea there is definitely more wrong here than just disappearing babies. I mean yeah it's BEYOND fucked up, but the situation that causes the facilitation of such practices is even more fucked up.
Change the bad shit about a culture and watch the society as a whole improve.

"change culture" is far easier said than done.
By no means impossible, but it takes time. A starting point is to put in place laws that ban these practices, and then actually enforce them.
A good example is the "little rock 9" we had here in the us. When schools were first desegregated, there was a lot of resistance to letting black kids into former white schools. One school in particular had practical riots to keep black kids out, but the law was enforced when the national gaurd was called in.
Again, no means easy or a smooth ride, but its possible
It's amazing that people in these cultures don't seem to realise that if nobody has baby girls then your family line will die out any way when their son can't find anyone to marry.

That's already begun happening in parts of North India where female infanticide was at it's worth such as Haryana and Punjab. This sort of "little prince" culture is also a big reason why rape is a big issue up in the northern parts of India as well.
They've begun to swallow their pride and look for brides from South India (who come from matrilineal societies for the most part, and dish out any shit they get from their in-laws :v:) because they're left with no other choice.
