Germans only consider 5 places safe to travel to (and one is Germany)
A new survey by the market research company GfK shows that a majority of Germans think the parts of the world where people don't greet you with a “Guten Tag” are scary and insecure places.
Germans can largely agree on one thing. Stay in the German-speaking world (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and you are likely to come back from your travels in one piece.
A thin majority even let Italy and Scandinavia into the club. The GfK survey, released on Monday, showed that 53 percent consider Scandinavia safe for travel, and 52 percent think the same about Italy.
Despite Spain being the most popular tourist destination for Germans, most seem to think you are taking your life in your hands when you fly off for a weekend in Mallorca - just 49 percent consider the Castilian country a place where one can feel safe and secure.
The team behind the survey said that discussions of increasing taxes on tourists had given Germans the feeling they were no longer welcome in Spain. Meanwhile a recent terror attack in Barcelona and unrest in Catalonia had also contributed to the muted enthusiasm for the Iberian peninsula.
Classic tourism destinations like Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia were considered even more risky, with just 5 percent of respondents agreeing that they were safe.
“Sun, beach and sea have been replaced by security as the number one factor for travellers when it comes to picking their destination,” said Prof. Ulrich Reinhardt, who led the study.
Reinhardt argued that a guarantee of safety would come to replace a guarantee of sun as the decisive influence on people’s decision making.
The survey asked people about their attitudes to 30 tourism regions. Only one in three thought of Britain as safe, and just under one in four (23 percent) said that the US is a safe destination. Australia and Canada ranked more favourably, winning the trust of 44 percent and 47 percent of Germans, respectively.
But these countries were still behind the clear winner, their own dear beloved Bundesrepublik, which was considered safe by 77 percent of respondents.
Reinhardt said that perceptions of safety were strongly correlated with educational levels. Better educated Germans were almost twice as likely as the average to say that Britain and the US were safe countries to travel to.
Gee, who would have thought that people who don't fall for scaremongering are less likely to be xenophobic.

Maybe the media ought to report less on the scary brown people, just saying
Tbf, I'm pretty scared of visiting the US. All it takes is one wrong move to readjust your pants

As long as you're not going to Compton or someshit you'll be fine. Anyone who's genuinely afraid to come here is either excessively paranoid or gets all of their information about America from news articles.
New Zealand isn't safe?
What the fuck. We're practically harmless flightless fat fucks here.
They must be getting you mixed up with Australia. Step on the grass, get bit by a poison snake, step on the sand, get bit by a poison spider, step in the water, get stung by a poison jellyfish. Might as well stay in Germany.

You'll be fine. I was only shot 3 times today driving through Houston. The good news is, the medical bill is only going to cost like $124,000.

What if you get a grass cut and it gets infected and, because there's no crime, there's no policeman to, sheerly by luck, find you at the side of then road?
Also the hole in the ozone layer might give you really nasty sunburn. Nz is fulla nope
Also people there are bad drivers, very unsafe indeed

Don't forget the rampaging hordes of orcs
Don't forget the rampaging hordes of orcs
Or sheep.
Considering the frankly bizarrely high amount of German tourists (and residents that I've mistaken for tourists) I encounter out and about in my city, I'm wondering what New Zealand would place on this list.
Don't forget the rampaging hordes of orcs
So long as your home before the sun goes down they won't attack, it's like mugger rules. Also if you find yourself out at night and chased by orca remember that they can't climb trees, again rather like muggers

Didn't nz used to be a German tourism hot spot?
Of course Australia is up there, I've lost count how many germans I've met in Singapore who are transiting to Australia for work holiday visa

Feels like it still is. You'll be able to walk in the crowded parts of town any day and spot some guys with backpacks reading books with "Reiseführer für Neuseeland" on the cover.
Where is the initial study, I can't find it at the GfK
Going to America next year.
California fortunately, so my chances of getting gunned down are measly.
Though immolation and AIDS is a whole different thing :v:
america scares me
i was going to go to kentucky this year with my family to attend to a wedding but those plans somehow just disappeared but even then, the fact i hear so many things about random shootings, muggings and whatnot in america makes me feel the crime problem there is more than it should be
im paranoid about going there even though i want to like it
This is the original study I think
http://www.tourismusanalyse.de/
I managed to get a copy if anyone is interested and there is absolutely NOTHING about safety in the initial questionaires, everything int here about safety is in interpretation.

Took some digging but the source is not actually GfK but a collaboration of GfK with "Stiftung für Zukunftsfragen".
Methode: Das GfK-Marktforschungsinstitut befragte zwischen dem 17. November und dem 8. Dezember 2017 Bundesbürger ab 14 Jahren.
method: The GfK-market research institute asked between 17. Nov and 8. Dec 2017 Germans age 14 or higher the following question: In which of the following countries or regions do you feel safe and comfortable?:
Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Italy, Spain, Canada, Australia, Benelux, Greece, Croatia, United Kingdom, Indian Ocean, Caribbean, Hungary, Poland, USA, Bulgaria, Thailand, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, China, Russia South America, Mexico, India, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Ukraine.
From another site it appears to be 2000 people have been asked.
Could not find more about it or something that tells you more about what age groups said what.
The question is lacking quite a few places and it is a bit odd you have people 14-18 in their group considering they probably can't even travel on their own if they wanted.

Unless you're a minority you're fine. Even then, you might get wiggle room for being a foreigner and people will be nice purely for that. So long as you don't look like what they think a Muslim looks like, which includes people like Sikhs
That or stick to major cities, most of which are islands of liberalism.

So wait explain me then why do so many Germans go to Croatia every summer?
This article is more sensationalist than Daily Mail.

He questions asked was where they felt comfortable. That is totally different than what the news report is saying. This can be classified as fake news.

Pretty much, yes. Feeling comfortable, it makes pretty good sense that they're mostly agreeing on German-speaking countries. You know, where you don't have to bother with food you don't know exactly what is, or people and road signs you don't understand. Also, one can assume that, with the question posed like it is, people would list places they've been and not places they haven't.

You're more likely to be killed in a car crash driving to the airport in your home country than you are to get robbed/shot here. Dont fall for the bullshit scaremongering the media spews forth.

You are wrong, I went to California a handful of years back and one of the first nights there I was woken up by gun shots and screaming. This was in LA.
The good old countries of "Caribean" and "South America"
What a shitty study

I've noticed a weird trend among the posts in this thread (and some other ones)...
america scares me

America isn't as bad as you hear, and the "brown people" aren't as bad as you hear. Maybe the media just likes to blow literally everything out of proportion?
(For the record, Kentucky is actually a really hospitable place. City folk are the ones you have to worry about having chips on their shoulders, really.)
Tbf, I'm pretty scared of visiting the US. All it takes is one wrong move to readjust your pants
America is fine, really. If you're white and/or going to standard visiting places in the US you basically have nothing to worry about. Not to make it sound like you'll get fucked with if you're a minority. Maybe if you're a muslim in the south then I'd be worried about people being uncomfortable around you or harassment. The south sucks anyway.
That said America's crime rates are vaslty overstated by the media because they get more money and views by depicting us as on the border of Mad Max style anarchy. In reality, crime rates have been falling for decades across the board. As long as you stay in a relatively affluent area (and why would you visit a shit part of america on purpose anyway) you will almost certainly be fine. And even if you are a minority or not visiting the wealthiest part of america, you'll still probably be fine. I live in the suburbs and walk around at night without even the slightest fear every night cause I live in the pussy ass suburbs and nothing is gonna happen to me.
Long story short despite our reputation this is not mad max and you will almost certainly not see 8 mass shootings, 6 molesters, 7 protests, 5 racists, 3 police shootings, 0 decency, or get shot 9 times in a routine traffic stop. Jenny, jenny.
