Belgian police have arrested a man after he tried to drive into a crowd at high speed in a shopping area of Antwerp, the city’s police chief said.
At 11am a car drove at pedestrians walking along the Meir, Antwerp’s largest shopping street, and “people had to jump to the side” to avoid the vehicle, said Serge Muyters, the Antwerp police chief.
The driver was arrested after a chase in the city centre.
Muyters said the suspect was a man of north African origin, who was wearing a camouflage uniform.
Belgian prosecutors said the arrested man was a French national who lived in France.
Good job by the security services. I wonder if driverless cars are going to have an unintended side effect of making these sorts of attacks less viable. It would make irregular driving a lot easier to spot, I'd imagine.

That possibility seems so remote I wonder if it's any relevant to this thread. No one in Belgium even knows driverless cars are a thing.

If it does, it won't happen for a very, very long time. I would imagine driverless cars would have to constitute 99% of the vehicles around.
Seems like the terrorists have finally realized that they don't need to import weapons and shit into a country, they can weaponize the most common of tools and vehicles.

Dunno about you but this is one of the oldest ways to terrorize innocent people alongside attacking with work tools like wrenches and hammers.

Indeed, there's a reason why horror movies feature chainsaws, hammers etc.
Is 'driving vehicles into crowds' the new 'blowing yourself up' for radicals?
Makes sense. It's much easier to get the resources and you don't need the mental fortitude required to genuinely believe it will be worth dying, plus the kill count (bad wording, I know) wouldn't be much different than if you used an actual bomb.

imagine hacking a car to drive itself into people. you can kill dozens without even being there.
