The lifespan of the PS4 MTX Key modchip will only have been of a few weeks. The device, which was enabling game sharing with virtually infinite numbers of “friends”, has been confirmed by multiple sources to be patched with the latest PS4 firmware. PS4 Firmware 4.73 was released earlier today to block the MTX Key and all of its clones.
This is not a big surprise (we had mentioned the many ways Sony could choose to block the MTX Key), and more pain could be on the way for the few people who had chosen to buy the piracy device: Some users on psxhax are reporting that their accounts used for gamesharing have been banned. In other words, it seems like staying on firmware 4.72 will only delay the inevitable.
Hardware mod resellers are facing an always shrinking time span during witch they can monetize this kind of hacks. Similarly to the MTX Key, The Cobra Black Fin on the PS Vita never really took off due to how convoluted it was to use, a small user base. The Black Fin was ultimately rendered useless once piracy was enabled on PS Vita firmware 3.60.
More generally, Sony have become pretty good at killing these hardware mods as soon as they come out, confirming that funding piracy is pretty much a bad move, any way you look at it.
Damn, thats a lot of R&D money gone.
What was so expensive about it? How much did they lose?

I guess the "expensive" part is a bit relative, on the user side it costed $60 to $90
I can't imagine the creators got their money back from the whole endeavor though, since it was patched less then 3 weeks after release
Just a side-curiosity there: for ban they mean they "Bricked" the console, or that their online Sony account was banned?

I'm sure this is about PSN account. Sony will definitely end up being in court if they will start bricking consoles intentionally.

iirc you can get your console banned, ps3s could.
iirc you can get your console banned, ps3s could.
You can still play games, but you cannot connect to the online service through any account.

probably console banned + account ban
that's what ms did to hacked xboxes, you can play games freely but any account that ever plays on the console becomes permabanned from xbox live
back in the day there was a massive issue with cheaters getting their console banned and selling it for cheap on ebay and some poor kid logging in on it and suddenly their xbox live account was banned until 1/1/9999, that's why to this day i still log in with a dummy account whenever i buy a new xbox 360

I repair consoles and I've had numerous PS4 consoles in work that are hardware banned despite not being modified in any way. The only modified unit I've ever seen was a 360 but our stock comes in through a big retailer. Most people willing to mod a PS4 like this wouldn't try to make quick money back selling it to a store.
Not sure on the specifics but I know getting refunds can result in a ban.

Yeah, I forgot about that. For sure, Sony can (and has history of) ban PS3/PS4 so it can't connect to PSN at all. I meant that Sony can't make your console not work at all.

Tbh smart pirates wouldn't be doing this while connected to their main anyways, and avoiding updates / etc

MS also banned for playing a game before it officially released while Sony didn't, can't really determine the actions of one based on the other. They've always been pretty dissimilar in how they controlled their consoles.
