We want to let everyone know that a new game will be appearing alongside your favorite Blizzard games—one that’s a little different from what you might normally expect. Bungie’s upcoming first-person action game Destiny 2 will be joining the party! We’re excited to announce that we're partnering with Bungie and Activision to support the PC version of Destiny 2 exclusively via Battle.net.
We’re big fans of Destiny here at Blizzard, and we’re honored to be able to help the talented folks at Bungie and Activision bring their much-anticipated sequel to a new platform. Being on Battle.net will allow Destiny 2 to plug in to our existing global network, freeing up the developers at Bungie to focus their energy and resources on making the best and most fun game they possibly can. This also means Destiny 2 players will have access to our online social functionality, including chat with friends, the ability to see which of their friends are online in Destiny 2 or in Blizzard games, and the ability to stream gameplay directly to Facebook.

Does this mean other games are going to come to the Blizzard platform too?
Our focus in terms of supporting non-Blizzard games is solely around Destiny 2. Aside from potentially evaluating needs or opportunities for future Activision games, we don’t have any short- or long-term plans to support third-party games with Battle.net. It’s important to us to maintain our quality standards for any experience or service we’re putting in front of our players, which represents a big investment of time and effort on our part, so this is not something we’re jumping into lightly.
I assume by this announcement they are reverting the name of the Blizzard app back to Battle.net too.
im excited that they're calling it battlenet again more than anything
Kinda a shame about no Steam support, but it does need competition.
Battle.net, Uplay, Origin, Amazon, Good Old Games, Windows Store.
Glad they still call it Battle.net :v:
That's alright though.
Battle.net, Uplay, Origin, Amazon, Good Old Games, Windows Store.
I think he means that he likes that another major title is releasing anywhere but steam so the market stays diverse, not that steam has no competition
TBH this isn't all that surprising with the whole Activision-Blizzard thing. Makes sense that they'd help each other out every now and then.
What the hell? A non-Blizzard game on battle.net?
Very bizarre.

Activision is the publisher of Destiny and owns Blizzard, so I'm not too surprised.
It's called Blizzard App!!!111
Battle.net, Uplay, Origin, Amazon, Good Old Games, Windows Store.
Are any of those really competition though?
I think he means that he likes that another major title is releasing anywhere but steam so the market stays diverse, not that steam has no competition
Exclusivity is pretty abysmal though, it doesn't actually do anything to help with competition because they're not competing in selling a particular product. I'm not choosing between Battle.net, Good Old Games, Steam, and Uplay for where I want Destiny 2. I'm "choosing" between Battle.net. So Blizzard doesn't have to care what Steam or any other service is doing, they're not actually competing to sell the game.

Bingo
Took me an hour to realise the same outcome
I was confused as to why it happened, but then I remembered I'll be able to buy the game with WoW gold, so I'm completely fine with this decision. :v:

They probably wanted to keep it inhouse so they have more control over the platform
Are any of those really competition though?
Amazon certainly as a matter of reach. The others are competitors as digital distributors, but they don't compete to sell virtually any of the same titles, save for Ubisoft who puts theirs on both Uplay and Steam.
Surprised. I'm sure this will compete with at least one of the other Battle.net games.
One more grindy game on Battle.net.
Battle.net, Uplay, Origin, Amazon, Good Old Games, Windows Store.
They're not even called Good Old Games anymore since 2012, the year which they've started to add newer games as well (Mostly Indie).
Kinda a shame about no Steam support, but it does need competition.
Just add it as a non-steam game if you need the overlay that badly.
does this mean I can finally hide world of warcraft from the blizzard app or will i be unable to hide destiny 2 as well
This is a better outcome than it being on Steam tbh. Battle.net can handle this kind of high player volume game better than Steam, plus the way bnet integrates chat into the game is really useful.

how so?

Activation doesn't own Blizzard, they're both top level companies. It's why the owning company of both Activison and Blizzard is called Activision Blizzard, Inc.
This is good for the simple fact that I don't think Blizzard would like a poorly optimized game served through their client.
I wonder if they will move COD and all other games to Bnet too. Steam would be missing some big names then.
Aw fuck, I hope this wasnt the source of those rumours that Blizzard was hiring people for a campaign FPS
I was really hoping for singleplayer/more Co-Op Overwatch
im excited that they're calling it battlenet again more than anything
They're still calling the actual application you download "the blizzard app" but they backed out of calling the website anything else but battle.net, seemingly.
Activision is the publisher of Destiny and owns Blizzard, so I'm not too surprised.
Activision doesn't actually own Blizzard. They've got a weird sort of connection, but they're both independently operating company, who just happen to have the same stock and board. Activision has no actual control over Blizzard or Blizzard IP, thought hey can still financially pressure the company. That's what every Blizzard employee has told me (Bunches of them including management staff used to frequent a brewery my parents worked at, so I got to meet a bunch)
Still it makes sense that some sort of partner ship would actually arise from the connection. Who knows, Blizzard might add more Activision titles down the line.
