Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith said at a news conference that crime apparently occurred early Monday. A video of the vandalizing was posted on YouTube. The video included narration by a man who pummeled the base of the 44-foot-tall monument, shattering part of it. Smith says police have not identified suspects in the crime. According to the Maryland Historical Society website, the monument’s cornerstone was laid in 1792 at the north Baltimore country home of one of the first French consuls in the colonies. It was moved to its current location in 1964.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/225-year-old-columbus-monument-vandalized-in-baltimore/2017/08/21/7b1cc852-86a6-11e7-96a7-d178cf3524eb_story.html Even if you hate Columbus, this is literally destroying a piece of history.
Gotta love it. We went from destroying Confederate statues, to defacing busts of Lincoln, to people calling for the destruction of Teddy Roosevelt statues, and now destroying 200+ year statues.
Fucking Christ. I know this should go without saying, but it's probably best you don't read the comments on that video.
Not to support any vandalism of any historical statues, because I believe history should be recorded both good and bad... but Columbus was an evil bastard. He didn't discover America either. Why is there a statue in his image?
Now, from his base on Haiti, Columbus sent expedition after expedition into the interior. They found no gold fields, but had to fill up the ships returning to Spain with some kind of dividend. In the year 1495, they went on a great slave raid, rounded up fifteen hundred Arawak men, women, and children, put them in pens guarded by Spaniards and dogs, then picked the five hundred best specimens to load onto ships. Of those five hundred, two hundred died en route. The rest arrived alive in Spain and were put up for sale by the archdeacon of the town, who reported that, although the slaves were "naked as the day they were born," they showed "no more embarrassment than animals." Columbus later wrote: "Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity go on sending all the slaves that can be sold." But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had invested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. American Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
And regardless if the Vikings discovered America first, Columbus's voyage indisputably changed history for both the Americas and Europe far more than any Norsemen did.

Whether it was for the better or worse is up for debate.
it's not even in his image, it's more like an obelisk

I don't care how much it glorifies/represents something bad you shouldn't fucking vandalise statues or any piece of history, especially something like this.
Well, he did change history. Whether it was for the better or worse is up for debate.
that is an impossible question to answer
when you destroy shit like this, it gives the neo-nazis more fuel some people have no self-control it seems
Even if you hate Columbus, this is literally destroying a piece of history.
What piece of history? I can't even find the obelisk on Google, and the countless of books films and stuff still exists, so it's not like he has been removed from history or anything.
It's called iconoclasm, it's happened countless times before and isn't that big of a deal.

Was it vandalized prior to this? It looks fucked up around the base already.
this reminds me on pictures of Algeria where 'young radicals are destroying graves of soldiers from allies who fought vs axis there' because of it being part of west (irony is the Algerians were against nazis always) destroying historical monuments asks questions what is enough ? are you going to blast thousand years old world-wonders because of all the slaves/prisoners deaths ?
Ye olde slippery slope at it again.
Maybe this is all just due to economic anxiety
I know this should go without saying, but it's probably best you don't read the comments on that video.
I went ahead out of inane curiosity to see how bad it could get and regret it due to the level of rabid insanity going on. You have one side applauding the destruction for inexplicable reasoning and the other literally asking for the rounding up of blacks, communists and liberals to be shot en mass while constantly toting white genocide being a thing.
Gotta love it. We went from destroying Confederate statues, to defacing busts of Lincoln, to people calling for the destruction of Teddy Roosevelt statues, and now destroying 200+ year statues.
Wow, what? The fuck did Teddy do?
Columbus sucks big ol' smelly dicks, but so does doing shit like this. Fuck these guys. And also fuck Columbus. A lot of being-a-fucking-dickery going on on both sides here.

This is kind of like that, except imagine that instead of the rapists getting to walk, they never even get arrested in the first place. I've literally been at this post for hours trying to explain it, but I can't. You just have to understand that there parts of this country where (many) groups of people that have it unreasonably bad and have had it proven to them that there is no hope for a change. Everybody has a breaking point, and when you reach yours it's important that you react in the right manner. I think it's ignorant to pretend that the people angrily vandalizing these statues are people that sat down and decided to vandalize statues. I think these are people that are exactly as fueled up as the people we saw in Virginia but instead of attacking their enemies bodies they're attacking non-living representations. It's not helpful but damn is it the least destructive way to destroy something.

There is no rational reason to do this. The type of people who are vandalizing these monuments aren't beaten down or anything like that. These are opportunists who saw a chance to break the law and use it to make themselves feel good.

And that they should be excused because of it??? Aha thanks for only committing a little crime instead of a lotta crime, guess I'll let you off the hook this time since you're upset!!! Like at a point you're virtue signalling too hard dude. Lay off.

Why is there a statue in his image?
Aside from the fact that Zinn is a terrible source (at least he helped start moving us away from the "great man" method of history?), when viewing historical figures and events you have to put your thinking cap on and view it from the period and culture that individual was from - and in that regards he was a fairly average person. He was born 200 years before Locke, so it's weird to hold him to Locke's ideas. Also, for the vast majority of European society he did "discover" the Americas, and while never setting foot on the continental US, he did set foot on Peurto Rcio, which is US territory. As to why there are statues to him, it's a lot like the US's founding myth - a Romulus and Remus of sorts, and to many they view that without him there would not have been a US. I'm not a colombus fan, I'd rather people just view him from the proper lens.

Last time I had that urge I bought a big stack of cheap tile for five bucks and smashed it in the privacy of my garage. Destroying public property is going too far.

So how long until people try to vandalize the Washington Monument because the person it's named after owned slaves?
So how long until people try to vandalize the Washington Monument because the person it's named after owned slaves?
They already vandalized the Lincoln monument in DC. Washington's will prolly be defaced next.
