JAKARTA (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis saw Indonesian troops drink snake blood, roll in glass, break bricks with their heads, walk on fire, and more, in a rare military demonstration on Wednesday meant to show the unique skills of Indonesia’s military.
[...]
Perhaps the highlight was a demonstration involving live snakes, which Indonesian forces brought out in bags and scattered on the ground, just feet from where Mattis was standing. That included a King Cobra, which widened its neck as it if were going to attack.
The soldiers then cut off the snake heads and fed the snake blood to each other, as the crowd looked on. At least one Indonesian soldier bit a snake in half.
[...]
Mattis did not immediately comment on the demonstration, which came at the end of a three-day visit to Indonesia. He travels next to Vietnam.
Cool
The ceremony at Indonesia’s armed forces headquarters was far more theatrical, however, even featuring a blindfolded soldier shoot out a balloon held between the legs of one of his colleagues. At least one shot missed, although no one appeared injured. ......
break bricks with their heads
Ah yes, see in Indonesia, all soldiers are expected to participate in breaching actions, personally with each taking out a single brick.
Special forces and militaries across the world seem to try to out-do each other in questionably dangerous ways, like yes its a confidence and compatency thing but still putting people into harm's way unnessicarily is just dumb and wasteful especially in special forces where you've invested hundreds if not millions into training.

Probably not the first time Mattis saw this. When Marines cross train with Indonesians biting off snake heads and drinking the blood is practically part of the exercise.
at least it probably made a strictly business trip for Mattis a bit more interesting than usual. and it's better than that creepy globe ritual trump did in saudi arabia
rare for someone to upstage mattis's own madness. the man is practically a real life version of the soldier from tf2
I know a guy who was in the Indonesian military and this checks out (and he's told me far worse)
Rolling in glass is beginner levels
Try eating it

I don't think I've ever seen US military versions of these save for watching shitty quality footage of non-operators fucking up.
I'll be impressed when they can take gunshots and not die, lol. Mind over matter is fine and all, but in a military/war environment that sorta machismo will get you killed via stray bullet.

I remember a dude who was a Seabee that used to brag about having participated in that. Our unit ended up making fun of him about it so we started calling him "Cobra Blood" to mock him.

Already have,though not from military.
If i not wrong, its called "debus" where participant demonstrated their inhuman resistance.
Eating nails, stabbing their stomach, lighting oneself on fire, and many more
Honestly this is nothing new. Soldiers are taught jungle survival, and drinking snake blood is one of the lessons, it saves lives when you have little to no water.

Marines do it on Ex Cobra Gold in Thailand.

I think is naive to believe that special forces will really pull off fancy tricks in the middle of an operation.
Special forces have an air of mistery around them. The goal of these shows is to keep that image
thats nothing i drink bee blood
sounds fucking metal.

Mad, you say - but isn't he basically the only decent member of Trump's cabinet? Or at least the only one that isn't appallingly bad?
