Taiwan woman divorces husband who ignored her messages
A woman in Taiwan has been granted a divorce, using the "Read" indicators on the Line messages she had sent to her husband as proof that he had been ignoring her.
The app showed he had opened the text messages, but didn't reply to any of them.
A judge ruled in her favour earlier this month.
It's called "blue-ticking" - a term that refers to the act of reading but not replying to someone's messages. The concept comes from social media apps such as WhatsApp and Line, which use tick notifications to show when someone has received and read your message.Over a period of about six months, the wife, surnamed Lin, sent her husband several text messages, including one after she was admitted to hospital because of a car accident, according to Judge Kao.
In one message she told her husband she was in the emergency room and asked why he simply read her messages but didn't reply, she said.
Although her husband did visit her once in hospital, the court found that his subsequent ignoring of her messages was grounds for divorce.
"The defendant did not inquire about the plaintiff, and the information sent by the plaintiff was read but not replied to," the court ruling said.
"The couple's marriage is beyond repair."

The blue tick or read indicator is bloody annoying, times where I want to reply later or clear the notification, it shows up as read.
I actually wanted to remove WhatsApp from my phone ever since they added that blue tick horseshit and if possible, just be accessible via phone and regular SMS.
I hate that it's gone from "Oh, snookypookums isn't answering his texts or picking up his phone, he must be busy - best try later or wait for him to get back in touch" to "That fucker snookypookums read my message but didn't respond right away! What a fucker!"
Since when did people get so fucking entitled to an immediate response that not complying arouses anger they see is justified? Like, who the fuck do you think you are to decide that you are to immediately take #1 priority and my fullest attention the nanosecond you send me a message or give me a call and I'm in the middle of something?
I am always paranoid about this sort of thing happening where they see that I read it but hadn't replied, so I'll wait to even look at a message until I'm ready to respond.
Can't you disable the tick in the options?

If you're just ignoring texts when your wife gets in a car accident and is in the hospital, not even texting to check how she's doing, maybe a divorce is the best option. The article also goes into other aspects of why this marriage wasn't exactly a happy one.
Yeah I think this has more to do with the husband not giving a shit his wife was in the emergency room, and less to do with the texts themselves

It can get excessive. I know people who'll regularly take over an entire day to respond.
What's app has a feature to turn the read receipts off. Highly recommended when you have a needy girlfriend who just seems to text all day at work instead of actually working.
Disabling receipts also means you don't see them from people who have them on, as some sort of punishment for hypocrisy. It should be about an individual's privacy, not some game you're either in or out.
It can get excessive. Far too busy at work to respond (or sometimes even read) a message. Too tired and sleeping during the day to respond. And B: Why are you sending me a message at two AM looking for idle conversation?

More to the point, you don't need a reason for a divorce. Marriage requires the consent of both parties. If either one becomes unhappy for any reason, or no reason at all, they can force a separation.
i'd really like to disable it on facebook, and I seem to remember that used to be possible

I believe it still is with custom scripts and stuff

i'd say that's pretty damn justified
Also, sometimes, I really want to give a really long reply to questions friends asked, but I want to be in a zone where I can type it in detail.

Messenger is like this too but they have an "active last" thing so even if i don't click the message, whoever sent it knows how active I was.
Luckily none of my friends give a fuck if i ignore them outright because im busy doing something else
Well it's more like the guy is an absent fuck and his family are dicks in general.

Fucking this. The concept of blue-ticking escapes me. I can't fucking believe how people can take it so seriously.
I'm someone who quite often doesn't reply right away after reading a message. Here is why:
I'm just simply too busy or not feeling well enough to enter into a conversation. Sometimes I just don't want to talk to anyone about anything. Sometimes I've got so much shit going on that I don't have the time to invest. (This excludes most chat programs where I can set myself as Busy or Do Not Disturb.)
It's never malicious.
It's still rude and honestly if your not going to reply in a reasonable time frame why even bother reading it in the first place?

I both agree and disagree. There are many really valid circumstances to where you can't respond or can't prioritize even if you physically are able to respond, some have already been mentioned in this thread. At other times you're just being plain rude ignoring someone, and apps with these functions makes it crystal clear that you're not interested in them. A lot of people will argue that they don't owe you a response ever. And no, they don't, not by law or anything, but you're kind of an asshole if you ignore them.
I usually respond to my guy friends pretty quick if its just meaningless chatter. If its a chick im spitting game on I take a little while to do some satanic rituals to come up with some smooth shit.
I hate the advent of read receipts and "last online" tags and stuff. No one likes them, so I wonder how they got implemented in the first place.
Everyone whining about blue tick and "read" notifications, you realise both WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger have options to get rid of that shit, right?
For WhatsApp, you can basically make it so people can't see when you were last online (the downside to this is it also means you can't see when people were last online yourself), and there's also a way to hide the blue ticks, but it'll be obvious if you read and reply to a message and they notice the ticks stay grey.
For Facebook, you can just set yourself offline, so people can't see when you were last on. Read notifications still show up though.
That's what I do myself, and even if I don't, I don't care? If someone messages me and I read it and get back to them 5 hours later, there's probably a reason for it. If they get upset by it, I don't care, and if they make a big thing of it, I tell them exactly how it is and it's fine. Lots of you complaining about this only have a problem cause you're too worried to shut someone down who is being super childish about the fact you've read something or been online without messaging them back.

If I'm at work and I pull my phone out to check the time and see I have a message, I'll see if it's important or if it can wait till I'm on break.

I've turned off "Last seen" on WhatsApp, because even though I do read all the messages pretty much the second I get them, I often don't have time to reply to them instantly but due to the habit of me checking them instantly it might show that I've been "Available" multiple times over the last 30 minutes or so thus making me look like an ignoring asshole who doesn't want to answer you.
I still have the blue tick because I use that to see if someone's read a possibly important thing I've sent them without having to wait for them to reply "OK" or something.
If I don't answer, its because I can't even grab my phone.
I should be slower.
god i love taiwan
dun worry guys i heard its a peaceful divorce

being able to opt out doesn't mean the problem isn't there
there's a whole generation growing up with a host of really unhealthy pressures thanks to social media and having to worry about the minutia of people reacting to your messages is another element that's genuinely going to cause or exacerbate lifetime anxiety and self-confidence problems in people
saying just to opt-out is nearly as naive as saying people can just switch off facebook to stop cyberbullying

I actually don't know anyone who actually hates me for not texting back immediately. And even if they do, who cares? No reason to remove what's app in my opinion.
Blue-ticking is one of the reasons why I hate Telegram.
Why do you all have not like read function so much? For me, they give peace of mind that a person I send a message to has seen it, reply or not.
