The story of how scientists discovered a massive “supercolony” of Adélie penguins in Antarctica—which they detailed in a study published Friday (March 2)—begins in 2014, with NASA satellite imagery.
Heather Lynch, a professor of ecology and evolution at Stony Brook University, in New York, and Mathew Schwaller from NASA, spotted guano stains in images of the Danger Islands, off the northern tip of the continent. Where there are penguin droppings, there are most certainly penguins, and the stains, visible from space, suggested there were a large number of them. But only a trip to the rocky, remote chain of islands could confirm the suspicion.
The duo teamed with ecologists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and other universities in the US and UK for an expedition in 2015. They found penguins nesting at the landing site, and beyond that a colony of an estimated 1.5 million Adélie penguins, a “hidden metropolis,” writes Science Alert. This meant there were more Adélie penguins in the Danger Islands than in the rest of the Antartica Peninsula combined, as the researchers report in the study, which was published in Scientific Reports. They called the area “a major hotspot of Adélie penguin abundance.”
Edit: Can mod change the title, I fucked up there. It should be "How a supercolony of 1.5 million penguins was discovered"
Those are some cute penguins, how do they manage to find enough food with a colony that large?

The article said via satellite photography as well as using AI from drone pictures mapping the area

woah... i didn't realise penguins had that technology

They have exceeded us
I for one welcome our new penguin overlords.
Fuck me i'm tired, i completely misread your question
I thought it was HOW was the colony found...
How high are you OP?

we need to warm the planet up faster!
before its too late!
Those are some cute penguins, how do they manage to find enough food with a colony that large?
I'm not sure if they do the same as emperor penguins, but my guess is they spend day's out at sea catching fish and only come to the colony to feed their chicks

Seriously though, I hope everyone leave the pingu's alone to do their pingu thing. Last thing that should happen is people going "More penguins = more fish in area" and then fucking it up for everyone. :frown:
Sorta reassuring and mystical to know theres still stuff out there to discover while I sit at home playing bideo games and beat my meat to the same category I've been cracking away at on Pornhub for the better part of a decade

1.5 million penguins managed to hide from advanced technology for the better part of a decade, yet you can't get through one category on Pornhub? Amateur.
I really hope people don't fuck with the penguins though. Let them continue to be free.
only god knows what these penguins would do to anyone who fucks with them
so this is what happened after club penguin closed
so this is what happened after club penguin closed
they're still trying to tip the iceberg
Now we need to recognize Antarctica as a country. I bet those penguins have their own government and policies.
They have exceeded us
Well, they DID invent Linux...
so this is what happened after club penguin closed
club penguin was just a prototype to their master plan

So it begins.
So they found a colony of penguins just by seeing their skids?
How come they couldnt see the brown spot from space? 1.5 million penguins= A lot of turds, what a sight to behold.
