If you have ever been caught fumbling for your Opal card at the ticket gate, a Sydney man may have found the solution.
He had the chip from an Opal card inserted into his hand and is now tapping on using the technology that is implanted underneath his skin.
Bio-hacker Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow, his legal name, had the Opal near-field communication (NFC) chip cut down and encased in bio-compatible plastic, measuring 10 millimetres by 6 millimetres.
He then had the device implanted just beneath the skin on the side of his left hand.
:neat:
that shit only ever worked half the time for me when I was in Sydney so I'm imagining him furiously rubbing his hand on one of those readers at the gate.
going to see more and more of this kind of thing. i'm waiting for apple or google to release some kind of general purpose chip that acts as a card like this as well as identification, credit card, keys, ect.

Holy fuck, I think I know someone who's friends this guy personally
EDIT: Yep, just asked the guy. Apparently we're trying to get him to help with our university society.

i can see this going horribly wrong, and google and apple are among the very last entities I'd want to trust with sensitive information considering they already use it for malicious purposes themselves
plus the fact that an implant can fuck up your body (infection, inflammation, etc) for virtually no gain at all (besides possibly the people too stupid to stop losing their keys and cards constantly)
What's a person who can afford surgery to implant chips in his skin doing using public transportation anyway? Yeah if you can't afford a car and rely on public transport to get around, simply fork out $120,000 to implant the bus card in your hand. Good idea.
Meow's a cool guy, I've talked to him a few times through the Sydney biohacking community.
The issue I have with NFC implants over other microchips is that for security NFC chips are unique and non-programmable. I'd be much more inclined for it if you could reprogram your implant for when opal inevitably changes systems.
Wouldn't moving it into a wristband work equally well? I mean, as long as you don't forget it, I assume you could open the card, take the chip and wrap a coil around the inside of the band?

probably cost him maybe $1000 if that

scalpel and alcohol don't cost too much, look up Cody's Lab, the guy implanted a magnet in his finger.

Do they dress up as animals in their spare time?

You can't call yourself a bio-hacker that way

Don't know if I want to! The idea of putting electronics inside my hand always seemed a little weird to me. Like do they degrade over time? Could that potentially be an issue for this man later on?
Hey I know this dude! he ran in the last electorate I was in. He got preferenced on name alone

This guy changed his name to Meow-Meow, I don't think he's very good at making important decisions.

this kinda shit is dirt cheap to do. people rig themselves up with lights and nfc chips daily

They run a maid cafe & disco where everyone wears cat ears called 'Gamma disco meow²'

I think you're underestimating how expensive Sydney is :v:

I have no clue what's mass transit like in Sydney but in my experience with Prague, unless you happen to be some sort of badly antisocial person who simply can't handle sitting next to other people for a few minutes, for anybody living anywhere in the inner city, mass transit is much more convenient and significantly faster than trying to go by a car, and Prague's metro area isn't even THAT well developed.
In our family of 5 with parents we have 3 cars total among us and everyone still has a prepaid mass transit card because trying to go everywhere by car would be complete lunacy.
Mass transit is fantastic and the idea that it's just for poor people is terribly backwards.
Last time I heard from this guy he had set up a community run laboratory. Really cool stuff.

Yeah he does sound like the hackerspace kinda guy.
3 days later "We've redone the entire system! you gotta go buy new cards."
"fuuuuuuuuuuck"

Have you ever driven through fucking Sydney
It's a nightmare of heavy traffic and the streets don't make any sense
[editline]1st July 2017[/editline]
Also public transport (and bikes) being better for the environment than even electric cars. Considering the fella who got the implant
There's mentions from me on another forum about a year or three ago where I was suggesting the idea on our regional fare card system. I've seen other people make rings or embed them in their phone.
TransLink has since forced the idea shelved because implants fall under "mutilation or duplication of TransLink property" which is against the ToS and is a $175 fine if caught.
Beep Beep. Here comes the fun police.

Must be tough at home
"why do my cats keep calling out my name over and over again?!"
For a split second I thought he had put that entire fucking card under the skin of his palm
mannn fuck that shit. if i'm gonna be put under the knife it has to at least give me super strength or an eight inch cyberdong
just being able to take the metro buttass naked is not worth

RFID chips have way more use than just a bus pass. Imagine never needing keys to unlock doors, you just swipe your hand over a sensor and bam, in you go. The only time they're an issue is when your had gets severed, but I don't think you'll be taking your car in that situation.

It also has the added benefit of freaking out idiots who think they control your mind and shit, those people are beyond goofy.
I can do the same with a card and some duct tape
checkmate hackers
